Surfer Gabriel Medina was taking on Kanoa Igarashi, the man who beat him at the Tokyo Olympics and eventually won silver, and he was looking to turn the tide this time around. It was the highest-scoring wave in Olympic history. “The conditions were perfect, the waves were taller than we expected,” Brouillet told The Guardian. “So he [Medina] is at the back of the wave and I can’t see him and then he pops up and I took four pictures and one of them was this one. “I felt like it was a 10,” the three-time WSL world champion said after his round.

Although we’re all here to win our individual medals we’re all backing each other.”Meanwhile, John John Florence recorded the highest overall score of the day (17.33) in the men’s competition while Griffin Colapinto secured the highest individual wave score to also reach the last 16.

My father is an avid surfer who introduced me to the sport at a young age, and the freedom he felt in the ocean had a big impact on me. He faced challenges pursuing the sport, since it was historically reserved for white South Africans and beaches were segregated until 1989. Despite the obstacles he faced, my father never lost his love for the ocean and its power to heal. In 2018 I became the first Black South African surfer to qualify for the World Surf League Championship Tour, an elite professional competition. My parents being so proud of who they are makes me feel proud, too, and I work to continue that legacy.

The Olympics Have Arrived

It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Now the Olympics return with untold opportunities to geek out on sports you haven’t thought about for several years, or ever. Broadcast coverage of the Olympics makes this transformation easy. I’m a total sucker for a hyperemotional documentary featurette on that gymnast whose family sacrificed everything for her Olympic dreams. “One of the strangest things I’ve ever seen an animal do,” Alex had told me, and I concurred.

Leleo Kinimaka grew up in Kauai, where the Pacific Ocean provided routine and rhythm to his days. “I’d wake up and I’d go surfing all day, maybe swim or canoe,” he recalled. “I’d only come home for lunch.”It’s fitting, then, that the Hawaiian native, still vibrantly athletic at 61, has carved out a career as a woodworker whose creations — primarily the intricately designed surfboards known as alaia boards, which have been used by islanders to shred waves for centuries — both reflect his upbringing and celebrate his culture. On a recent weekday, Kinimaka was in his light-filled studio, which is nestled in the verdant Koʻolau Range on Oahu, shaping a piece of wood with a planer that sent wood chips flying. Half a dozen finished boards rested against a wall, their lacquer shimmering in the morning light, but what immediately caught the eye were the intricate patterns embedded in their facades.

Rome CNN —Italian officials are trying to identify a young woman who was filmed kissing, humping and grinding against a statue of Bacchus, the god of wine and sensuality, in Florence over the weekend. His original Bacchus is kept in the Bargello Museum in the center of Florence. The act has sparked a wide range of reaction on social media platform X – from outrage to ironic amusement. In 2023, a group of young tourists posing for pictures to post on social media were accused of toppling a valuable statue at a villa in northern Italy. Back in Florence in the same year, a tourist was detained, accused of damaging a statue in the 16th-century Fountain of Neptune in the Piazza della Signoria.
