Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. When Nvidia reports fiscal third-quarter results Tuesday, analysts are expecting to see revenue growth of over 170%. Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, Wall Street will be closely scrutinizing the company that's been at the heart of this year's artificial intelligence boom. In particular, the emergence of AMD in the generative AI market presents a new dynamic for Nvidia, which has mostly had the AI graphics processing unit (GPU) market to itself. "NVDA needs to forcefully counter the narrative its products are too expensive for generative AI inference," the Bank of America analysts wrote.

Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. Nvidia on Monday unveiled the H200, a graphics processing unit designed for training and deploying the kinds of artificial intelligence models that are powering the generative AI boom. The new GPU is an upgrade from the H100, the chip OpenAI used to train its most advanced large language model, GPT-4. The H200, which is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2024, will compete with AMD's MI300X GPU. AMD's chip, similar to the H200, has additional memory over its predecessors, which helps fit big models on the hardware to run inference.

This week's question: The cardinal rule of discipline is to not violate cost basis and show patience to buy more high-quality stocks on pullback. How do you evaluate a flying stock which might not come back to levels of cost basis to add more? Since we are not anticipating the stock breaking below our cost basis — it is rallying — we need another way to determine when to buy more shares. If you can't buy below you price basis, you should buy at or below your valuation basis. And then set up points to buy when the valuation goes lower, just as you would when the stock price falls.

Supermicro could be set to take advantage of artificial intelligence hype, according to Barclays. The firm initiated coverage of the information technology company on Tuesday with an overweight rating and a $327 per share price target. Analyst George Wang noted that Supermicro is in an advantageous position when it comes to the emerging artificial intelligence opportunity. The analyst noted that AI inferencing, which is the process of a trained neural network model making predictions, already made up 52% of the company's second-quarter revenue. "We model SMCI's revenue growth at 17% in FY25 after 46% growth in FY24, consistent with IDC's [International Data Corporation] forecast of a 17% CAGR [compounded annual growth rate] in 2021-2026E for AI server revenue growth," Wang said.

Hate speech continues to flourish on the messaging service formerly known as Twitter, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The CCDH said Wednesday that X fails to remove posts that contain hate speech despite being notified that the content violates the company's current hateful conduct guidelines. About 140 of those 300 posts contained antisemitic content, including images of Nazi swastikas, messages supporting Holocaust denial and notes promoting conspiracy theories related to Jews. The CCDH said it reported the posts to X via the company's user-reporting tools on Aug. 30 and 31. Major companies like Apple and Disney ran online ads on X that appeared next to the hateful content, the CCDH report said.

Revenue: $11.22 billion, according to Refinitiv. A closer look at estimates shows just how reliant Nvidia has become on AI chips. By contrast, Nvidia's Datacenter group, which houses AI chips, is looking at a 111% increase in revenue to $8.03 billion, according to estimates. Nvidia's AI chips, including the A100 and H100, have been difficult to purchase in recent months as startups, big companies, governments and cloud providers all have placed orders. Last year, the U.S. placed export restrictions on Nvidia, which forced the company to make specialized, slower versions of its AI chips for the Chinese market.

They're widely viewed as the best chips for training AI models, and Nvidia's financial forecasts suggest insatiable demand. Even with all that momentum and seemingly insatiable demand, baked into Nvidia's stock price is a slew of assumptions about growth, including the doubling of sales in coming quarters and the almost quadrupling of net income this fiscal year. Looking at the last 12 months of company earnings, Nvidia has a price-to-earnings ratio of 220, which is stunningly rich even compared with notoriously high-valued tech companies. Should Nvidia meet analysts' projections, the current price still looks high compared to most of the tech industry, but certainly more reasonable. It's the steepest weekly decline for Nvidia's stock since September of last year.

"No one is coming for Nvidia on AI, period, any time soon," Stifel analyst Ruben Roy told CNBC in an interview Wednesday. The new version of Grace Hopper primarily delivers improvements in memory capacity and bandwidth compared with the first-generation product. In practice, improving the memory capacity and bandwidth of the Grace Hopper Superchip should help AI applications run more efficiently and smoothly. Volume production of the improved Grace Hopper Superchip is expected in the second quarter of 2024, according to Nvidia. Open-source software Nvidia's closed-source CUDA software platform – along with a library of pre-trained AI models — has helped establish the company's AI dominance.

The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. Heading into 2023, the outlook for the server market is murky, especially in the early part of the year. He said tech companies can move faster with Supermicro servers and are willing to pay for execution and the company's design skills. Another specialized market Supermicro is targeting is servers for 5G or telecom applications, using a new kind of approach called OpenRAN. Supermicro said in November that a big unnamed customer was responsible for nearly 22% of the company's sales in the quarter. Intel and AMD have issued downbeat prospects for the server market, and companies of all sizes are cutting costs.
