Hurricane Milton has exploded into a monster storm as it soaks up its natural fuel, warm water, in the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center had warned that Milton was likely to strengthen into a major hurricane, defined by minimum sustained winds of 111 mph, and its status was confirmed at 8 a.m. Monday. Up to 8 inches of rain was forecast, with storm surges of up to 15 feet possible for coastal cities, they said. The latest hurricane is a rare product of the southwest Gulf of Mexico, rather than the Caribbean or the Atlantic. Milton started as Tropical Depression 14, in the Gulf’s Bay of Campeche, sheltered behind the western coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

On Tuesday, Milton "wobbled," according to an early evening forecast from the National Hurricane Center. “Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida,” the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday in an advisory. About 1,200 of the state's 7,900 gas stations, or nearly 16%, are currently without fuel, according to data from GasBuddy. About 1,200 of the state's 7,900 gas stations are currently without fuel, according to the data. The storm is forecast to remain "an extremely dangerous hurricane" through landfall in Florida, according to the forecasters. Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene wrought a path of destruction that left more than 230 people dead in the Southeast, another massive hurricane is projected to barrel into western Florida. Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified earlier in the week to a Category 5 and is expected to make landfall near Tampa as a major Category 3 hurricane, bringing destructive flooding and life-threatening storm surge. Local officials have warned that people staying should write their names on their bodies with permanent marker so they can be identified later. More than 12 million people are under hurricane watches and warnings, and roads have filled with people evacuating.
