Read previewJoe Biden is facing mounting pressure to prove he's medically fit to run for a second term, but experts say a cognitive test could set a dangerous precedent. Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation," Sen. Lindsey Graham said all presidential nominees, including Biden and Trump, should take a cognitive test. Cognitive tests are usually quick and simple and can check for functions such as concentration, abstract thinking, language, and memory. He told ABC's Stephanopoulos on Friday: "I have a cognitive test every single day." According to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, after Biden's physical in February, his doctors decided he didn't need a cognitive test.

In June, 51 million people tuned in to watch the much-anticipated debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden later told ABC that he “just had a really bad cold” on debate night and said he was distracted by Trump “still shouting” over his muted microphone while Biden was speaking. Last November, Dr. Bruce Aronwald, Trump’s personal physician since 2021, issued a meager, three-paragraph, data-devoid note attesting to Trump’s physical and cognitive fitness for office. While the USPSTF review is noncommittal on the use of dementia screening in ostensibly asymptomatic people, there’s no ambiguity in the use of testing in adults where dementia is a concern. There are a variety of screening exams such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) or Mini-Mental State Examination that are used to detect signs of cognitive decline.

Did you watch George Stephanopoulos’s post-debate interview with President Biden? Did it allay your concerns about his fitness to run for a second term? For voters who held out hope that President Biden’s failure to communicate during last month’s debate was an aberration, the intervening days have offered little comfort. Mr. Biden, instead of campaigning vigorously to disprove doubts and demonstrate that he can beat Mr. Trump, has maintained a scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances. The president, elected in 2020 as an antidote to Mr. Trump’s malfeasance and mendacity, is now trying to defy reality. For more than a year, voters have made it unquestionably clear in surveys and interviews that they harbor significant doubts about Mr. Biden’s physical and mental fitness for office. Since his feeble debate performance, multiple polls have shown that both Mr. Biden’s approval rating and his chance of beating Mr. Trump have markedly dropped from their already shaky levels.

President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats increasingly appear to be on a collision course. Reporters are going to be asking any Democratic lawmaker in sight whether they believe Biden should remain their party's nominee against former President Donald Trump. As of Monday morning, five House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step aside, while two have pointedly said that he can't win. AdvertisementAll of this makes the week ahead extremely important for Biden and the Democratic Party. The worst possible outcome for Biden is that a public consensus emerges among congressional Democrats that he must go, and that party leaders follow suit by issuing calls for him to drop out.

Biden's poor performance led to a Democrat freak out and growing calls for Biden to step aside. To be sure, the president turned in a more energetic performance than he had on that woeful debate night, when he sometimes appeared lost and incoherent. “I just had a bad night, I don’t know why.”“And how quickly did it come to you that you were having a bad night?” Stephanopoulos asked. Only 42% said the same about Trump, 78, whose own terrible debate performance was eclipsed by Biden’s meltdown. Three separate polls conducted by CNN, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal after the debate all showed Biden trailing Trump by six points nationwide. Previous polls have shown Biden trailing in nearly all the battleground states he narrowly won in 2020.

Fact-Checking Biden’s ABC Interview

President Biden rejected concerns about his fumbling performance in the first presidential debate last month in a prime-time interview on Friday. In the interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News, Mr. Biden downplayed and misstated polls showing him falling farther behind former President Donald J. Trump since the debate, exaggerated Mr. Trump’s proposals and made hyperbolic statements about his own record and recent events. what Was SAID“After that debate, I did 10 major events in a row, including until 2 o’clock in the morning after the debate. I did events in — in — in Georgia, did events like this today, large crowds, overwhelming response, no — no — no slipping.”This is exaggerated. Whether or not the events can be considered “major” and crowds “large” are matters of opinion, but Mr. Biden did misspeak at several.

ABC News adjusted its initial transcript of a much-discussed moment during President Biden’s Friday interview after White House officials told the network that they believed the president’s words had been inaccurately rendered, according to several people familiar with the discussion. The moment occurred toward the end of Mr. Biden’s interview, when George Stephanopoulos asked the president how he would feel if he stayed in the presidential race and was defeated by former President Donald J. Trump. “I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the goodest job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about,” Mr. Biden said, according to the official transcript that was distributed by ABC on Friday night. By Saturday afternoon, the quote in the network’s online transcript had changed slightly: “I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the good as job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about.” The network appended an editors’ note explaining that the transcript “has been updated for clarity.”

Read previewAll eyes were on ABC News on Friday when President Joe Biden appeared in his first interview since his catastrophic debate appearance last week. Democratic donors and supporters of Biden saw the interview as key to addressing criticisms of his poor debate showing — in which Biden repeatedly fumbled his words and appeared to lose his train of thought. Biden, currently 81-years-old, has long faced criticism over his age and fitness for office, which grew louder following the debate. "If I stopped now, I would go down in history as a pretty successful president," Biden said. The polls show I can win," Biden said.

CNN —Joe Biden’s team provided a list of questions to a radio host who interviewed the president this week in the aftermath of his debate performance, the host told CNN. CNN reporting later clarified that it was the Biden campaign that handled the interview. Blackwell pointed out that both Lawful-Sanders and Earl Ingram, host of “The Earl Ingram Show” in Milwaukee who also interviewed the president this week, asked Biden “essentially the same questions.”A Biden campaign spokesperson on Saturday did not deny that the campaign provided questions but said interviews were not conditioned on the acceptance of provided questions. To the Editor:Re “A Defiant Biden Says Only the ‘Lord Almighty’ Could Drive Him From the Race” (nytimes.com, July 5):Anyone with elderly loved ones knows that they have good days and bad days, which is precisely why President Biden’s interview with George Stephanopoulos means nothing in the big scheme of things. We’ve already seen plenty of evidence through multiple interviews indicating that both Mr. Biden and Donald Trump are capable of age-related incoherence at any moment. Large majorities of Americans have repeatedly told pollsters they don’t want Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump to run again. The longer the Democratic Party persists in ramming Mr. Biden down our throats, the more it ensures Mr. Trump’s victory and the loss of American democracy and the rule of law as we know it. CNN —President Joe Biden said Friday that his poor performance in last week’s debate was a bad night but not evidence of a serious condition. When asked on Friday whether he’s had cognitive tests and an exam by a neurologist, Biden said no. Biden gave no indication he would be willing to have such tests conducted in the aftermath of his debate performance. “So, again, pretty important for a job like president,” Ranganath added. “Part of those evaluations will look at the overall health of the individual, from neurologic health to also cognitive health,” she said.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden’s struggle to prove he’s got the strength and cognitive capacity for a second term is becoming an excruciating personal and national ordeal. While his interview performance was far stronger than the president’s often incoherent showing at the CNN debate in Atlanta, that’s not saying much. He appeared more composed and fluent than at the CNN debate. But Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman of California told CNN that the president needed to do a prolonged and live television interview unlike the recorded one on ABC. CNN —ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos had a tall task on Friday: Press President Joe Biden on his age, his acuity and the future of his reelection campaign. Stephanopoulos mostly lived up to the challenge, asking rapid-fire, biting questions that did not let Biden off the hook.
