UK lawmakers vote to allow assisted dying
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.

Are scented candles bad for you? What the science says
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
The risk of toxic emissions is greater when candles are scented or dyed, which is another reason why paraffin-free candles aren’t immediately in the clear. The association’s stance is based on an October 2021 study that consisted of burning 24 soy and paraffin candles, scented and unscented. However, the research was a joint effort between the NCA, the European Candle Manufacturers Association and the Latin American Candle Association. If you simply can’t resist using scented candles, look for those with essential oils or candles labeled as phthalate-free. When burning scented candles, do so in small doses to avoid headaches or irritation of the respiratory system or eyes.

In a world where sentiment drives purchasing decisions, these differences in opinion could shape how much people end up spending this holiday season. "It's very hard being a millennial and having to worry about buying a house, affording groceries, rent, all that stuff. Meanwhile, Trump voter Armando Duarte, a 62-year-old retired utility worker from Fort Lee, New Jersey, told CNBC he's feeling a lot better about the holiday shopping season since Trump won. In GOP-won states, shipping volumes increased by 50.4% after the election, while Democrat-won states saw volumes decrease by an average of 11.2%. Only two blue states — Illinois and Minnesota — saw shipping volumes increase after the election, while all others saw rates fall.

President Joe Biden on Thursday criticized President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will implement 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, saying the comments were "counterproductive." "I hope he rethinks it, and I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden said, responding to a reporter's question about his reaction. Trump said Monday on Truth Social that one of his first executive orders would be to hit Mexico and Canada with a blanket 25% tariff. Mexico and Canada are the second and third top suppliers of goods to the U.S., according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. "In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights,” she said in Spanish on X.

“This exceeds the amount the State Health Plan spends on cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and chemotherapy medications,” the State Health Plan said in a March statement. The health plan’s board of trustees eliminated coverage of this class of medications for weight loss starting in April. “They know diets don’t work long-term for weight loss, yet they are denying coverage for a medication that has been effective,” Blanchard said. But patients typically need to stay on the medications to maintain their weight loss, meaning they face long-term costs. Besides making the medication more affordable, he said, it should encourage the use of weight loss drugs and treatment of obesity as a chronic disease instead of stigmatizing it as a moral failing.

Each time, when the West finally accepted Ukraine’s requests, Russia’s most catastrophic threats did not materialize. Although Putin said the attack was “a response from our side” to the Biden administration’s decision on longer-range weapons, Russia has not needed a pretext for such strikes in the past. By providing Ukraine with ATACMS but only allowing it to strike parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia, “we sent Russia the message: ‘You know what? The decision to fire slightly longer-range Western weapons is a difference of degree, not of kind. By law, Russia considers these territories its own, and warned of dire consequences if Ukraine targeted them with Western weaponry.

Canada’s competition authority on Thursday accused Google of abusing its tools for buying and selling online advertising to create a monopoly, and filed a complaint seeking to force the company to sell two of its main advertising technology services. The case strikes at the heart of Google’s business and echoes an ongoing U.S. antitrust lawsuit against the Silicon Valley giant. Both cases come amid four other lawsuits filed in the United States against Google since 2020 and other efforts by officials around the world to reign in the power that large technological companies like Google, Amazon and Apple hold over information and commerce online. Canada is also attempting to use new laws to limit harms caused by social media and to require tech companies to compensate traditional news organizations.

Ask a European intellectual and you will likely hear the name of Wolfgang Streeck, a German sociologist and theorist of capitalism. In recent decades, Mr. Streeck has described the complaints of populist movements with unequaled power. Mr. Streeck may be best known for his essays in New Left Review, including a dazzling series on the cascade of financial crises that followed the crash of 2008. Mr. Streeck (whose name rhymes with “cake”) argues that today’s contradictions of capitalism have been building for half a century. Profit margins suffered, of course, but that was in the nature of what Mr. Streeck calls the “postwar settlement.” What economies lost in dynamism, they gained in social stability.
