With password management company NordPass saying each person has an average of 100 online accounts, the deaths of loved ones have become ever more complicated. And while digital legacy planning can ease some of that burden, experts say far too few people take advantage of those tools. These ghost clouds look beautiful, but they are a visible sign of deadly air pollution. Of all of the theories, however, the impact of shipping regulations is swiftly becoming one of the most discussed. But this is not an argument against cutting air pollution, Diamond said, it’s an argument for tackling it alongside reducing carbon emissions. The cooling impact of air pollution is far outweighed by the heating impact of burning fossil fuels. It’s when air pollution is tackled without also reducing carbon emissions, that “we can get into trouble,” Diamond said.

AI boom fails to propel China's cloud market growth

BEIJING — Excitement over artificial intelligence isn't yet fueling a boom in cloud services spending in mainland China. "The Chinese cloud services market remains conservative, relying heavily on government and state-owned enterprises to drive growth," tech market analysis firm Canalys said in a report Wednesday. Training AI models on the cloud, following a surge of interest in the potential of ChatGPT-like services, has been expected to drive the industry's growth. Alibaba 's cloud business, with the country's largest market share at 39%, reported just 2% year-on-year revenue growth in the quarter ended Sept. 30. Huawei, which isn't publicly traded and is the second largest cloud player, didn't separately state its cloud revenue for the third quarter, nor did Hong Kong-listed Tencent .

Amazon Web Services' Global AI Innovation Center, led by Sri Elaprolu, launched in July. Elaprolu said AWS customers are getting serious about moving ideas from concept to production. Still, most AWS clients don't quite know where to start with generative AI — that's where the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center comes in, Sri Elaprolu, the global head of AWS Generative AI Innovation Center and an 11-year AWS veteran, said. Interest in the Generative AI Innovation Center has been high since the company announced it in June, Elaprolu said. Many AWS customers are just beginning to think about generative AI, but an increasing number are starting to bring ideas into production.

Either way, one thing is certain: Companies are getting serious about cloud spend. And while Wall Street analysts hope the excitement over generative AI will drive customers to spend more money on cloud services next year, it's clear that optimization won't go away. The e-commerce titan also happens to run the world’s largest cloud-computing business. In fact, Amazon’s AWS unit now generates significantly more annual revenue than IBM and Oracle and comes second only to Microsoft in the market for business-focused software and related services. But Amazon has also been perceived as lagging behind its largest cloud rival in the field of generative artificial intelligence, given Microsoft’s aggressive push into the technology since the public launch of ChatGPT almost exactly one year ago.

During the Amazon Web Services cloud conference on Tuesday, Amazon unveiled upgraded AI chips, a new chatbot and an expanded partnership with Nvidia. Expanded Nvidia partnership Amazon on Tuesday outlined the details of its deepening partnership with semiconductor firm Nvidia – the global leader in the development of AI chips. Amazon's announcements involved not only Nvidia' bread-and-butter AI chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs, but also its fast-growing – yet still underappreciated – software-and-service offerings. In general, Amazon has touted its own AI chips as being a lower-cost option for customers. Nvidia's AI hardware is known to carry a hefty price tag .

But the real focus will be on whether widening U.S. curbs on sales of its high-end chips to China could hamper that run. The results will also be a major test for the AI-powered rally that has helped drive up the U.S. stock market this year, with the Philadelphia semiconductor index (.SOX) up nearly 50% in 2023. The Biden administration last month banned China sales of the H800 and A800 chips that Nvidia had created after previous curbs on exports to the country. Reuters GraphicsCHINA CHIPSBefore the latest China export curbs, demand for Nvidia's H800 chip, a slower version of its flagship AI chip, had outpaced rivals as it was better than the alternatives. The chaos is good for Google, Amazon, and others trying to catch OpenAI. Especially Google and Amazon, which were caught flat-footed by ChatGPT's rapid success and the impressive capabilities of GPT-4 and other OpenAI models. "In a fast-moving race, this lap has the advantage going to Google and Amazon but it's a marathon, not a sprint." Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and provides cloud infrastructure that runs the startup's AI products. Interestingly, Google and Amazon recently invested billions of dollars in Anthropic, an AI startup that is probably the closest rival to OpenAI in terms of talent and product capabilities.

The H200, as the chip is called, will overtake Nvidia's current top H100 chip. The primary upgrade is more high-bandwidth memory, one of the costliest parts of the chip that defines how much data it can process quickly. Nvidia dominates the market for AI chips and powers OpenAI's ChatGPT service and many similar generative AI services that respond to queries with human-like writing. The H200 has 141-gigabytes of high-bandwidth memory, up from 80 gigabyte in its previous H100. Nvidia also buys memory from Korea's SK Hynix (000660.KS), which said last month that AI chips are helping to revive sales.

Last month Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts on a conference call that GitHub Copilot had accumulated 1 million paid users. The new GitHub Copilot Enterprise will cost more than double the business offering, at $39 per person per month. On GitHub's website, people with Copilot Enterprise licenses can choose repositories to fine-tune Copilot on proprietary code. From there, they can ask GitHub's Copilot chatbot about elements of existing code and suggest lines of code in development environments.

Alibaba called Tongyi Qianwen 2.0 a "substantial upgrade from its predecessor," which was introduced in April . China's biggest cloud computing and e-commerce player announced Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, its latest large language model (LLM). They wanted to investigate the rocks that may contain insights about the contents locked within Earth’s core and mantle, the mostly solid layer of Earth’s interior located beneath its surface. Helium inherited from the solar nebula likely became locked in Earth’s core as the planet formed, making the core a reservoir of noble gases. “So, the helium we measured in these rocks would have escaped the core perhaps 100 million years ago or possibly much earlier.”Helium leaking from Earth’s core doesn’t affect our planet or have any negative implications, he said. If so, have fluxes of these elements from the core over (Earth’s) history influenced planetary evolution? I am excited to investigate links between helium and other light elements,” Horton said.

All four companies are buyers of Nvidia's cutting-edge AI chips, which dominate the market for training the massive models that power applications like the viral ChatGPT. "I think that Nvidia is the quiet partner behind the winners including Microsoft," Jim Cramer said Friday. Notably, about 3 percentage points of Azure's growth was linked to customer AI spending, Hood said. Amazon Amazon's results and earnings call Thursday added to the body of evidence on AI spending as a priority at U.S. tech giants. This week's slate of Big Tech earnings left little doubt that, as more Nvidia chips become available, there will be a place inside data centers for them to go.

Microsoft and Google, the next two biggest American cloud providers, also saw cloud revenue growth rates slow this year. Microsoft Azure and other cloud services saw revenue growth of 29%, down from 35% this time last year.
