Yet for all his lack of tree trunk biceps, Indiana Jones was always vivacious: outrunning boulders, sparring countless Nazis, and sprinting across collapsing rope bridges. As a longtime big Hollywood star and hitmaker, Ford had already achieved an immortality of a kind. It’s pretty clear from his newest venture, the overstuffed if not entirely charmless “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” that while Indy may not in fact be immortal, the brain trust overseeing this installment wishes he were. They haven’t simply brought the character back for another go, they have also given him a digital face-lift. That said, the altered Indy is cognitively dissonant; I kept wondering what they’d done to — or perhaps with — Ford. “Raiders” was created by Spielberg’s pal, George Lucas, who saw it as a homage to the serials that he’d loved as a kid.

How to Watch the Tony Awards

Lea Michele is going to lead a number from the revival of “Funny Girl” that opened a year ago. And Joaquina Kalukango, one of last year’s Tony winners, will sing a song to accompany the In Memoriam segment. Broadway is still struggling to recover from the lengthy coronavirus shutdown — attendance remains 17 percent below prepandemic levels — and producers view the Tony Awards as an important way to introduce a large audience to the newest shows. Also, the Tonys are a way to lift up theater as an art form, often boosting the careers of the artists involved. Wins and nominations help plays get staged at regional theaters and taught in colleges, and telecast performances help musicals sell tickets and tour.

'Jurassic Park' still has bite at 30, and here's why

CNN —It’s been 30 years since Steven Spielberg’s dinosaurs stampeded across the screen in the first “Jurassic Park,” but it feels more recent. Admittedly, I was the exact target audience for this creature feature, and even though I was already somewhat of a self-taught critic (note the aforementioned mouthiness), I was awed by what I saw that summer three decades ago, and my impressions of “Jurassic Park” remain to this day. Ariana DeBose, whose exuberant embrace of song and dance enlivened last year’s Tony Awards, will return to host the annual ceremony this spring. Earlier this year, she sang the opening number at the BAFTA Awards, and a rapped section paying tribute to female movie stars was mocked and memed for a hot second. DeBose, who is 32, seems to have taken it in stride — in London earlier this month, she turned the kerfuffle into merch that raised money for charity, and last weekend she performed at Lincoln Center. This year’s awards ceremony will for the first time take place at the United Palace, a large theater in Washington Heights, in Upper Manhattan. The ceremony, which is presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, honors plays and musicals staged on Broadway; it is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, June 11, and to be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
The film won nominations for best picture, best director and its stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won nods for best performance by an actress and actor in a leading role. The nominations were announced by Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed on Tuesday morning at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Voting for the nominations concluded Jan. 17, and 9,579 members of the academy were eligible to vote, according to Variety. Neither women of color made it to the list for best leading actress. The Oscar nominations come just weeks after the Golden Globes returned to the airwaves.
“The Fabelmans” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” took home top movie honors at the 80th Golden Globes Tuesday night, capping the show’s return to prime-time television amid efforts to rehabilitate the awards standing in Hollywood. “The Fabelmans,” Mr. Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical movie about growing up as a filmmaker, earned him his third career award for best director. In an emotional speech, Mr. Spielberg said it took him his entire life to work up the courage to tell such a personal story.

As recalled in the deeply felt and finely etched memoir-movie “The Fabelmans,” Steven Spielberg grew up in a family where one parent was an artist and the other an engineer. A more ideal background can scarcely be imagined for a film director, who must navigate overlapping creative and technical challenges on every project. His parents even provided young Steven with narrative sustenance: an appropriately cinematic family mystery that took him many years to understand and that has given much texture to his work. Like the best memoirs, “The Fabelmans,” which Mr. Spielberg co-wrote with his longtime collaborator Tony Kushner , drills down into experience with admirable specificity and frankness. Through Sammy’s eyes, we understand, as children do, that when something has always been the same way, it barely attracts attention.
CNN —“The Fabelmans” allows Steven Spielberg to turn his coming-of-age memories into what amounts to a super-director origin story, recalling both his complicated family life and early love of movies and filmmaking. It’s a deeply personal chronicle from one of cinema’s greatest talents, yielding a movie that features wonderful moments within a somewhat scattered narrative. The film opens with the young Sammy Fabelman seeing his first movie, “The Greatest Show on Earth,” in 1952. “The Fabelmans” isn’t a blockbuster, but it’s a window into what influenced a director who has given us countless screen memories over his storied career. “The Fabelmans” premieres in select US theaters on November 11 and expands to wide release on November 23.
Leslie Phillips, the British actor in the “Harry Potter” and “Carry On” films, has died following a long illness. [1/2] Director Steven Spielberg, cast members Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord, Gabriel LaBelle, Seth Rogen and Chloe East attend a premiere for the film "The Fabelmans" during the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, California, U.S., November 6, 2022. "The Fabelmans" is co-written and produced by Tony Kushner and stars Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Oakes Fegley and others. That said, he felt that not being a part of Spielberg’s family allowed him to use his tools as a writer to ensure the movie was both true to Spielberg’s life as well as many families from various walks of life. The complexity of Sammy's family, which mirrors Spielberg's real life, is a key focus of the movie. "The Fabelmans" is set to arrive in U.S. movie theaters on November 11, following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
