5 p.m. Search for a speakeasy in a former prison complexThe handling of colonial-era buildings — which can be painful reminders of oppression — is fraught in Hong Kong. One reimagined site is Tai Kwun , a 19th-century prison and police station in the city center, which was converted into a public arts compound in 2018. Make a game of seeking out 001 , a speakeasy behind an unmarked black door, hidden in a maze of walkways (Tai Kwun employees will help you find it, if you ask). Once you’re inside, reward yourself for the search with an Earl Grey martini (158 dollars). Use Tai Kwun’s app for self-guided tours of the compound — some focus on architecture; others highlight the best spots for photos.

Former collegiate coach Jon Neeter bought a tennis center in Santa Monica, CA for $40,000 in 2010. He converted his single tennis court into four pickleball courts and business is booming. Plus, he liked the idea of his work being concentrated in one place, rather than scattered at various tennis courts all over LA. A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide by 44 feet long, much smaller than a tennis court. Plus, he was unsure about how he was going to replicate the Santa Monica Tennis Center anywhere else in LA.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Alexander Nguyen, a software engineer who moved from New York City to Seattle for a job at Amazon. It was his first job out of college, and he says it was the loneliest time of his life. Finally, after a three-month job search, things started looking up: I received a software-development-engineering job offer from Amazon in 2020. Back when I got the job at Amazon, all I was thinking about was my tech career and the $150,000 salary. Looking back now, I realize perhaps I should have looked a little bit harder for opportunities in New York before taking the first tech job that came my way.

Potluck Club opened last summer on Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side — outside the old boundaries of Chinatown, in an area where younger Chinese businesses sidle up against tattoo parlors, oyster bars and candlelit cocktail lounges with disguised speakeasy entrances. Given all the threats facing Chinatown, Potluck Club could have come across as sentimental or wistful, but it’s not. It isn’t a great restaurant, but it knows how to have a good time. Just past that is a display of movie posters from the golden age of Hong Kong and Taiwanese cinema. The original script was brief, just 35 pages, and the set, created mostly from scavenged furniture, was improvised and minimal. Audiences entered up a fire escape, over the roof and through the back of the building into a replica of a drugstore speakeasy. Scheduled to run for just four weeks in 2015, the production re-emerged in two new spaces the next year. Wright and his producers, Immersive Everywhere, had long wanted to bring the show — which uses both group scenes and more intimate ones and select one-on-one encounters to bring “Gatsby” alive — to New York. To bring this “Gatsby” to the city in which it’s set felt, Wright said, “amazing, inspiring, humbling, a bit intimidating.” It was also challenging.

Solo Per Due – “Just for Two” in Italian – is no ordinary restaurant, and not just because of its tiny size. Its owners claim it is the smallest fine-dining establishment not only in Italy but in the world, too. Guests are required to arrive at a specific time agreed by the owners, who prepare and serve the elaborate food. “This is not a restaurant – we offer a unique, intimate experience which is at the core of our decades-long reputation. Upon request, a private driver can be arranged to pick up guests, and fireworks can be staged in the garden.
