CNN —The genesis of photographer Joy Gregory’s latest project, “Shining Lights,” began 40 years ago, at a Valentine’s Day party in London. After the party and as they became friends, Mercer suggested the pair collaborate on a book about women’s photography. London CNN —Growing up in Nigeria as the oldest sibling, Adejoké “Joké” Bakare was usually the one cooking for the family. Now, her restaurant Chishuru has been awarded a Michelin star, making Bakare the first Black female chef in the UK to earn the accolade. In the West African language of Hausa, Chishuru means “the silence that descends on the table when the food arrives,” according to Bakare. She explained that she’s never looked to create an “authentic” restaurant for West African cuisine, but instead fuse different styles together and create new recipes. They just didn’t have the vision to see a West African restaurant in their premises.”Chishuru found its new home on Great Titchfield Street in the heart of London, and nearby West African restaurant Akoko was also awarded a Michelin star on February 5.

The case has drawn political attention in Britain because Ezedi had been granted asylum after a sexual assault conviction. Metropolitan Police Commander Jon Savell told reporters authorities now presume, based on CCTV footage, that Ezedi went into the River Thames from a bridge in west London. "It is now our main working theory that Ezedi has actually gone into the Thames from Chelsea Bridge. All of our work thus far has not seen him come off the bridge," Savell said.

London CNN —Archaeologists working in central London have discovered a burial site containing a wooden bed used in a Roman funeral. A team from Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) made the find near Holborn Viaduct, in the heart of central London, six meters (20 feet) below modern street level. However, the bed found at this site, preserved by the damp mud of the underground River Fleet, is the first complete example ever discovered in Britain. Alongside skeletal remains, the archaeologists also dug up personal objects in the Roman site, such as beads, a glass vial and a decorated lamp. The latest finds follow the discovery last year of an “incredibly rare” Roman mausoleum beneath a construction site in south London, close to the Thames River’s south bank.

In a statement, Metropolitan Police said the suspect was seen fleeing the scene in south London’s Clapham district following the attack. Nine people were wounded, including three adults who helped the initial victims and three responding police officers who were hospitalized with minor injuries, police said. “We will update as soon as we know more about their conditions,” Detective Superintendent Alexander Castle said in a statement. Prices dropped by 0.8% in August alone, the largest monthly fall since March, after a 0.3% decline in July, Nationwide's figures showed. The Bank of England has raised interest rates 14 times since December 2021 to 5.25%, and financial markets expect another rate increase this month to 5.5%. However Andrew Wishart, senior property economist at Capital Economics, said he expected house prices had another 5% to fall, taking the total peak-to-trough decline to 10.5%. "We think the August data marks the start of a significant further drop in house prices," he said, pointing to weakness in the latest Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors survey, which shows the most widespread price falls since 2009. The poll showed respondents expected house prices to be unchanged in 2024 and to rise just over 3% in 2025.

“I think we must all agree,” the British photographer Yevonde declared in 1921 to the Professional Photographer’s Association in London, “photography without women would be a sorry business.”With a focus on female representation, “Yevonde: Life and Color,” a vivid display of her idiosyncratic oeuvre at the city’s newly reopened National Portrait Gallery, argues for her role as a pioneer of color photography. Born Yevonde Cumbers in South London in 1893, she was known professionally as Madame Yevonde, rarely by her married name (Mrs. Edgar Middleton). On her own terms, she used the singular Yevonde, with which she signed her prints, exhibition invitations and 1940 autobiography, “In Camera.”After a succession of private schools in the home counties and a convent school in Belgium, Yevonde was sent to a finishing school in Paris. Though her teachers there dismissed an impassioned essay she wrote on Mary Wollstonecraft, Yevonde returned to England a convinced feminist in 1909, at the height of the women’s suffrage movement. After a stint marching, chalking sidewalks and selling papers for the Women’s Social and Political Union, Yevonde glimpsed potential career independence in the examples of two successful woman photographers, one of whom employed her as an apprentice.
