The Conference Board’s latest consumer survey showed that Americans this month became more optimistic about the future of both the labor market and the broader US economy. The monthly survey’s Consumer Confidence Index jumped in October by the fastest clip since March 2021. In September, jitters over the job market’s health weighed on consumer confidence, but economic data after that showed that the job market remains solid. “Views on the current availability of jobs rebounded after several months of weakness, potentially reflecting better labor market data,” Peterson said. Data for September pointed to a robust job market, which translated into better consumer confidence.

The one big fear that could upend the bull market

A chain reaction sparked by continued inflation could put the bull market to rest, according to Trivariate Research. As the bull market enters its third year, investors are wondering how much more room there is to run before a pullback is due. Now, Fed funds futures are pricing in a more than 95% likelihood of another drop to the borrowing costs at the central bank's November gathering, according to CME's FedWatch tool. In 2021 and 2022, Parker said there was a "strong and statistically significant relationship" between Fed funds futures and the price-to-earnings multiple on growth stocks. Though that connection now looks different, the Morgan Stanley alum said he would be "surprised if multiples did not compress meaningfully" if the expectation for the Fed funds rate rises from 3.5% to 5% or above.

North Korea is solidifying ties with Russia, a change from its usual focus on China. AdvertisementRussian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday appeared to confirm reports that North Korea had sent thousands of troops to eastern Russia. "But the Chinese are waiting for an opportunity where North Korea, Russia, and China can come stronger together, and I think North Korea sending the troops to Russia is a testimony to that." AdvertisementFor North Korea, China has long been its most important ally, providing trade, diplomatic support, and military aid to Kim Jong Un. Jim Hoare, a former UK diplomat who was posted to North Korea, told BI that even if China was frustrated by North Korea's increasing closeness to Russia, it should bide its time.

But the Trump campaign did not present any new evidence that rules were broken. Labour, and the party’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, quickly denied that the party funded the trips, insisting the campaigners traveled in a personal capacity at their own expense. But the Trump campaign elevated the dispute in heightened language on Wednesday. Trump has frequently attempted to deflect allegations that he has benefited from foreign electoral interference from countries including Russia. Starmer’s center-left Labour Party swept to power in Britain in a July general election, and has long held an informal but friendly relationship with the Democratic Party.

Ever since 2022, when inflation hit a 40-year high of 9%, Americans have been pissed off about the economy. Traditionally, economists (being economists) have focused on the economic costs of inflation — i.e., are price increases wiping out everyone's annual raise? In a normal economy, the small raises companies give are enough to offset the minimal inflation we typically see. In a survey of 3,000 workers, researchers found that most — a whopping 79% — just accepted the salary they were offered. AdvertisementBut now, poring over the new study, I realize I overlooked the role inflation has played in reshaping the pandemic-era workplace.

Whatever the reason, it might occur to you to try to get a new job opportunity just to leverage it for something better. "For me, the short answer is no," says Amanda Augustine, career expert at TopResume. If you're interested in a job, you apply and get the offer, that's a different situation. In the same way you'd be wasting your time, you'd also be wasting your prospective employer's. Beijing's lack of concrete economic stimulus actions poured cold water on U.S. investors who went big on the China trade, and strategists on Wall Street are warning of disappointment ahead. The professional cohort had piled into beaten-down stocks last month, stirred by hopes of more government assistance for the troubled China economy. "Indeed, the only part of the Chinese economy that appeared to be holding was its export sector. Investor sentiment toward Chinese stocks was partly aided by high-profile hedge fund manager David Tepper of Appaloosa Management, who turned extremely bullish. Stanley Druckenmiller reportedly said he's not interested in Chinese stocks under the current political leadership, regardless of the new policies.

The owner of Lay’s, Doritos, Tostitos and Ruffles chips will put more chips in some bags to claw back customers tired of higher prices with skimpier bags. A PepsiCo spokesperson told CNN that Tostitos and Ruffles “bonus” bags will contain 20% more chips for the same price as standard bags in select locations. PepsiCo is also adding two additional small chip bags to its variety-pack option with 18 bags, the spokesperson said. It’s a reversal of years of shrinking bags of Tostitos, Ruffles and other chip brands. Snack prices have gone up more rapidly than other store items.

One analyst suggests the market could see a repeat of the 2020 oil price war. "Saudi Arabia is fed up," Simon Henderson, director of the Bernstein Program on Gulf and Energy Policy at The Washington Institute, told Business Insider. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” a genre-bending sequel to the billion-dollar comic book smash, hit a sour note at the box office even as it opened to No. That’s a problem because the R-rated sequel carries a substantial $200 million price tag (the first film was produced for a trim $65 million). So, “Folie à Deux” needs to generate at least $450 million to break even, according to sources familiar with the film’s financials. Muted buzz for “Folie à Deux” began at Venice Film Festival, where “Joker” took home the fest’s top prize in 2019.
