Federal spending on children climbed to a peak of $11,690 per child in 2021 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2024, that spending is expected to level off to $8,760 per child — a decline of about $230 per child from the previous year, the research found. In 2021, child poverty fell to 5.2%, down from 12.6% in 2019. The expiration of the aid drove child poverty back up to 12.4% in 2022. Tax expenditures represent the largest drop in federal spending on children between 2022 and 2023, while there were also sharp declines in spending on nutrition and more modest changes in education funding, according to the Urban Institute.

Israel’s military forces crossed the border into southern Lebanon on Monday to conduct what its military described as “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Follow here for live coverage"A few hours ago, the IDF began limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence against Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon," Israeli officials said in a statement. Israeli soldiers spent roughly a week southern Lebanon pushing the PLO north of Lebanon's Litani River. Israel then invaded southern Lebanon in 1982, once again chasing after Palestinian Liberation Organization fighters that had made the country a base. Within Lebanon, Hezbollah is also a political party with seats in the country's parliament and provides social services to civilians.

Homebuyers can also now put less money down on their purchases — an attempt to breathe life into China's moribund property market. Since the pandemic, China's leader, Xi Jinping, has done little to stop the bleeding in the country's property market or to get China's ailing consumers to start spending money again. Xi's Beijing lacks the will and the power to turn China's economy around. At the heart of its problems is a lack of consumer demand and a property market going through a deep, slow-moving correction. Plus, there's Xi, who seems fairly uninterested in restructuring the property market.

BI broke down the pros, cons, and frequently asked questions about basic income. Universal basic income and guaranteed basic income could fill gaps in the existing US social safety net, experts said. A benefit of basic income is the element of choice, according to Shafeka Hashash, associate director of guaranteed income at the Economic Security Project. Private donors often fully or partially fund basic income programs, lessening the cost burden on local governments. Over the past few weeks, economic news from the U.K. has heavily focused on the state of British national finances and how they might impact both the British public and the prospects for economic growth. Regardless of how the U.K. fiscal situation stands now, it is clear that the current shortfalls are both years in the making and run the risk of having consequences that could last for years to come. The ultimate dilemma facing Labour now is that the country cannot produce enough revenue to close systemic shortfalls without sustained economic growth, but it also cannot create economic growth without real investment, both from the public and private sectors. In many ways, the current fiscal situation dates back to the financial crisis of 2008 and the fact that the country's economy was unable to snap back readily to close the budget shortfalls that occurred then. Borrowing in the financial year to August stood at £64.1 billion ($85 billion), with the country's debt hitting 100% of GDP.

A government shutdownThe rejection of Johnson's plan on Wednesday ratcheted up tensions in Congress as the September 30 deadline draws ever nearer. Back in 2008, the Obama campaign made an unprecedented effort to target young voters. In critical swing states like Pennsylvania and Nevada, young voters were more likely to report being contacted by the Obama campaign than older voters were. The issues that fire up young voters are increasingly out of step with the interests of an older, more moderate electorate. Young women have grown more liberal, and young men have become noticeably more sympathetic to the GOP. A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. JD Vance has repeatedly said that Americans aren’t having enough children. Elon Musk, broadening the complaint, has said that “population collapse due to low birthrates is a much bigger risk to civilization than global warming.”Because population decline is widely seen as a conservative issue, many progressives don’t seem to worry about it. If left unchecked, population decline could worsen many of the problems that progressives care about, including economic inequality and the vulnerability of marginalized social groups. Progressives need to develop their own version of pronatalism. Skepticism about pronatalism is understandable, since the position frequently comes packaged with regressive ideas about race and gender.
