A new Arctic blast of winter weather is set to dump yet more snow onto the Great Lakes and Northeast, as winter weather caused transport chaos and left thousands stranded. Lake effect snow is still affecting areas downwind of lake Erie after several punishing days of winter weather and is expected to last through Wednesday. By Wednesday, the clipper weather system should bring snow to the interior Northeast and New England, while intensifying snowfall in areas downwind of the Great Lakes. In Erie, Pennsylvania, drivers were pictured on social media digging their cars and driveways out of more than a foot of snow. A lake effect snow warning is in effect across the area until 7 p.m.

Widely used materials, such as polyester and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), can take a long time to break down. From there, they partnered with a machine manufacturing company, Heilig Group, which helped bring their shoe recycling factory FastFeetGrinded to life. Those materials are then shredded into small pieces, before being separated out by type, and then refined into recycled materials ready for reuse. Making shoes from shoesA shoe made of fully recycled FastFeetGrinded material has yet to hit the market, but brands are making strides to reuse materials. FastFeetGrinded is the brand’s largest footwear recycling partner in Europe; it takes Asics factory floor rejects, as well as used shoes returned in stores.

With just weeks until a December 20 spending deadline, negotiators in the House and Senate are trying to find a path forward on yet another short-term spending bill to run into next year — a move that will force incoming President Donald Trump to contend with a funding battle in his first months of his presidency and smack dab in the middle of what is expected to be a contentious confirmation season. The length of that bill as well as what else is included in it is still an active discussion, sources tell CNN. Doing so would help protect the speaker from a right flank that loathes an end-of-year mega spending bill, known as an omnibus. For now, negotiators are trying to nail down an agreement on what else will be included in the package. A top target: A disaster aid package to help areas ravaged by hurricanes this fall — and how big that package will be remains an active discussion.

Donald Trump could use Joe Biden’s pardon of Hunter Biden for his own gain, some worry. Hunter Biden pardon gives Trump political coverPresident Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden was a move by a father to protect his son that some lawmakers said they could understand. “I’ll put it this way — if it was my son, I’d pardon him too,” Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville said. What hasn’t resonated as widely is Biden’s stated reason for pardoning Hunter Biden. Yesterday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden, telling reporters he believes “Hunter was singled out.

WASHINGTON — As Congress returns this week for one last burst of activity before it wraps up the session, it faces a key deadline of Dec. 20 to avert a government shutdown. “We’ve got to do a lot of things at the same time,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said of the first 100 days of Trump’s second term. “We’re going to be walking and chewing gum.”Some Republicans would have preferred not to get bogged down with a funding deadline early in the new Trump presidency. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which writes funding bills, said there's little time. “Once they decide what they’re going to do — if they’re going to try to get any of these appropriation bills done before or whether they’re going to do a CR for all of them until March — I mean, that’s the real debate.

It was crumby for chef Tommy Banks when his van containing $30,000 worth of pies was stolen, but Michelin-starred chef has appealed to the thieves to donate them to people in need. The refrigerated van was filled with 2,500 pies with a variety of fillings including steak and ale, turkey and butternut squash, Banks said. He added that it had been “plugged in overnight” to keep the pies fresh. He added that he had planned to sell the pies at a pop-up stall in the nearby city of York. “I hope you don’t get any presents this Christmas,” he said in a separate post on his personal and business Instagram accounts.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers made the midseason decision to switch starting quarterbacks, the move wasn’t exactly celebrated. Releasing Wilson cost the Broncos $85 million combined against their salary cap this season and next — the biggest cap penalty ever. The Broncos still had to pay Wilson $39 million this year after they cut him, minus whatever salary he made if he signed with another team. That allowed Pittsburgh to scoop him for a bargain one-year, $1.21 million contract, with Wilson getting $37.79 million more from the Broncos. After having averaged 20.7 points per game with Fields, Pittsburgh is scoring 28.7 with Wilson.

Regenvanu said there was an urgent need for a response to climate change that was rooted in international law rather than politics. Mario Tama / Getty Images filesWhile advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice or World Court are not binding, they are legally and politically significant. Experts say the court’s eventual opinion on climate change will probably be cited in climate change-driven lawsuits in courts from Europe to Latin America and beyond. “As judges of the World Court, you possess the power ... to help us course correct and renew hope in humanity’s ability to address the greatest challenge of our time,” she said. Earlier on Monday, Germany also argued that the obligations of states with regard to climate change were established in the Paris climate agreement.

In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

The case could have wide-reaching implications for transgender youth living in states that have passed similar laws. After the first gender-affirming care ban for minors became law in 2021, a flurry of states passed similar measures. While 19 states passed laws banning gender-affirming care for minors last year, 11 states and the District of Columbia passed “shield” laws protecting access to care. So far this year, Ohio, Wyoming, South Carolina and New Hampshire joined the list of states banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth. The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

One City’s Approach to Tackling Domestic Violence

On a sweltering July night, Jesse Falcon was so high on cocaine, marijuana and alcohol that he would later say that he barely remembered the explosion of violence that happened. Convinced that his girlfriend was pursuing another man at a social gathering at their apartment complex in San Antonio, he began attacking the man. Cases like Mr. Falcon’s are troublingly familiar to court officials in San Antonio, which has long been plagued with a high rate of domestic violence. “They leave jail angrier and more resentful, and the trauma continues,” said Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez, a family violence judge in the city. A court run by Judge Gonzalez is trying a different approach: providing the abusers with a chance to change.
