Given the sheer volume of enemy drones, helicopters have joined the counter-drone fight. In Ukraine and Israel, helicopters of all kinds are hunting down drones. In Ukraine, a huge country compared to Israel, helicopters are a means to shield its airspace against large drone salvos. Advertisement"Given the Russian Shaheds' slow and low flight pattern, rotary aircraft can easily chase and destroy them," Borsari said. Modifications of this kind could make helicopters more effective drone hunters in the future, supplementing other ground- and air-based systems.

In its first official public appearance, the J-35A flew briefly at the opening in Zhuhai, climbing into the hazy sky. The smoggy opening also comes as China has sought to shed the reputation of its cities as being wracked by air pollution.

CNN —Record-breaking levels of thick, toxic smog that have shrouded eastern Pakistan and northern India since last month can be seen in striking satellite imagery. Air quality worsens in the winter because colder and drier air traps pollution, rather than lifting it away, as warm air does when it rises. Satellite imagery from NASA Worldview shows Pakistan’s Punjab province and parts of northwest India on August 31, 2024. NASA Worldview/CNN Satellite imagery from NASA Worldview shows heavy smog over Pakistan’s Punjab province and parts of northwest India on November 10, 2024. The second branch of the Taurid meteor showers, the Northern Taurid event, is about to take center stage. The Northern Taurids have been active since mid-October, but the shower will peak Monday night into Tuesday — with optimal visibility likely occurring after midnight — offering patient sky-gazers the best opportunity to view meteor activity, according to NASA. However, the moon will be about 79% full when the Northern Taurids peak this week, according to the American Meteor Society, which could make spotting meteors earlier in the evening more challenging. The Northern Taurids are visible until December 2, according to the American Meteor Society, so there is potential to spot more fireballs over the next few weeks. Here are peak dates for upcoming meteor showers, according to the American Meteor Society:Leonids: November 16-17Geminids: December 12-13Ursids: December 21-22Two full moons also remain — the beaver moon, which is a supermoon, on November 15 and the cold moon on December 15, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

Islamabad, Pakistan CNN —A smog-choked province in eastern Pakistan has issued a rare plea for cross-border collaboration with India, as major cities in both countries endure severe air pollution that risks the health of millions. “We are suffering in Lahore in a way due to the eastern wind corridor coming from India,” he said. Lahore, home to more than 14 million people, saw its air quality index surpass a record 1,900 in one part of the city on Saturday, according to IQAir, which tracks global air quality. Experts say India’s air pollution is so bad that smog could take years off the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Both India and Pakistan have tried to clamp down on the practice, but it is still widespread.

Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel work on a vessel off the coast of Nangan Township, in the Matsu Islands on Oct. 15, 2024, a day after China conducted the "Joint Sword-2024B" military drills around Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry said on Sunday it had spotted 35 Chinese military aircraft, including fighters and bombers, flying to the island's south on the way to exercises in the Pacific, a second day in a row it has reported such activities. China's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the missions, reported just days before Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. The United States is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, and its arms sales to Taipei, including a $2 billion missile system announced last month, infuriate Beijing. Early November ushers in a skywatching bonanza, with three active meteor showers offering the chance to see shooting stars light up the night sky. The Southern Taurids meteor shower is expected to reach its peak overnight from Monday into Tuesday. At the same time, the last of the Orionid meteor shower should still be visible, following its peak on Oct. 20. The Southern and Northern Taurids, meanwhile, are both long-lasting meteor showers, with peaks that are less clearly defined than some other shooting star shows. China's top three state-owned airlines reported profit declines in the third quarter despite record summer passenger numbers and fuller planes than last year, as a slowdown in domestic economic growth pushes flyers to seek cheaper fares. Beijing-headquartered Air China on Wednesday reported a net profit of 4.14 billion yuan ($581.34 million) in the quarter, down from 4.24 billion yuan a year earlier. China Eastern Airlines on the same day posted a net profit of 2.63 billion yuan, down 28.2% year on year. The country's largest airline China Southern said on Monday there was "strong demand in the aviation market" but reported a 23.9% year-on-year drop in third-quarter net profit to 3.19 billion yuan. Airlines globally have been seeing stable demand but overcapacity and sluggish yields as a post-pandemic travel boom abates and most planes are back in the skies.

C/2024 S1 was a sungrazer, a comet that passes within a distance of about 850,000 miles (1,367,942 kilometers) from the sun. “Comets are really hard to predict, and sungrazing comets like this are even harder than most. NASA“Statistically, it’s extremely rare for sungrazing comets to survive (as they fly) past the Sun,” Battams told CNN in an email. A handful of larger sungrazing comets have been observed surviving their close pass by the sun, such as comet C/2011 W3 Lovejoy in 2011. A severe geomagnetic storm brought spectacular light displays to many parts of the United States on Thursday night, with skies as far south as San Antonio bathed in rich hues of magenta and green. The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they are commonly known, are often more visible in Earth's polar regions, but due to heightened solar activity these dancing displays could be seen with the naked eye in numerous southern states.
