Other space startups have ambitions including asteroid mining, in vitro fertilization (IVF) in space, and space hotels. As space startups and billionaires vie for a foothold on the moon and beyond, experts say governments probably need to start setting some ground rules. Seven of the world's 10 biggest commercial space operators are based in the US, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. AdvertisementIn another vein, last year Florida passed a bill to protect space companies and their owners from getting sued over spaceflight passenger death or injury.

An aerospace startup has unveiled the test capsule for its luxury space tourism experience. It's the latest commercial spacecraft for suborbital flight, after Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin. Space Perspective, a Florida-based startup, recently unveiled a test capsule for its new Neptune spacecraft. The company touts the pressurized Neptune capsule as "the largest human spacecraft in operation" aside from space stations like the ISS. Space Perspective"The space capsule is like nothing the world has ever seen," cofounder Taber MacCallum said in a statement.

There’s an easy knock against the space dreams of Jeff Bezos and his rocket company, Blue Origin: In its 24th year of existence, the company has yet to launch a single thing to orbit. Blue Origin’s accomplishments to date are modest — a small vehicle known as New Shepard that takes space tourists and experiments on brief suborbital jaunts. By contrast, SpaceX, the rocket company started by the other high-profile space billionaire, Elon Musk, today dominates the launch market. On Wednesday, Blue Origin hopes to change the narrative, holding a coming-out party of sorts for its new big rocket. The rocket, as tall as a 32-story building, lay horizontally on the trusses of a mobile launch platform.

CNN —Mist rising from the Tuscan hills, a tiny fish staring at the ocean from inside the neck of a glass bottle, and a pangolin tucked contentedly under the chin of her carer are among the winning entries from the 2023 Travel Photographer of the Year competition. Shot all around the globe, the images illuminate both the beauty and tragedy that arise when humans interact with the natural world. Judges crowned Slovenian photographer AndreJa Ravnak the overall winner for her depictions of dream-like European landscapes, after considering more than 20,000 images submitted by photographers from more than 150 countries. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Caden Shepard Choi won the Young Travel Photographer of the Year award for her black-and-white series of photos depicting the Navajo people of Chinle, Arizona herding sheep, shearing them and then weaving with the wool. After much preparation, the 12-year-old's small scene turned into a big problem among school officials in Wheatland, Wyoming. Located on the eastern Wyoming plains, Wheatland is a small farming and ranching community with about 3,500 residents. There are few restaurants, no department stores — not even a local Walmart — and few performance venues besides Wheatland High School. "Unless you’re super closed-minded, I don’t see why you would do that.”Drama coach Stephanie Bradley, who also attended the high school, challenged the decision. “Most people in this part of Wyoming don’t come out early," Bradley said of LGBTQ+ teens on the state's rural plains.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Regents at Western New Mexico University threw their support behind President Joseph Shepard on Friday as he faces scrutiny over spending on overseas trips and his wife’s use of a university credit card. He reiterated to regents that trips to Zambia and elsewhere have helped put Western New Mexico on the map and attract more foreign students. Other members of his leadership team ticked off statistics on enrollment, graduation rates among foreign students and fundraising that has boosted university programs. Regents agreed Friday to conduct a broad review that will include their handbook, travel policies and other procedures in the coming months. They also agreed to a proposal by Shepard to create an ad hoc committee that can work on updating policies.

Opinion: Trump is a cultural phenomenon too

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is a cultural phenomenon. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have been unable to shake the loyalty of voters to Trump. To understand Trump, however, it is also important to recognize that he has become a cultural phenomenon within large swaths of the GOP. To be sure, Trump is not the first president to command strong cultural currency with voters that goes beyond traditional political attachments. Yet there is no president who has devoted the same kind of attention to marketing himself as a cultural phenomenon as Trump.

CNN —The shooting of three Palestinian college students in Vermont has prompted calls for the suspect to be charged with a hate crime. “When you add a hate crime enhancement that changes things,” George said at a news conference Monday. Crimes based on gender identity accounted for 4% of hate crimes, 1.5% were based on disability and less than 1% on gender. The Justice Department began prosecuting federal hate crime cases after the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law. Their murders shocked the nation and later moved Congress to pass a new hate crimes statute.

Will Ramsay, founder and CEO of the Affordable Art Fair, which puts on exhibits worldwide, said collecting art is easier than people might think. However, contemporary art is likely to increase in value over the long term, Diament said. There's also a satisfaction in buying something from a living artist, Diament said. "Some people like color, other people like to focus on drawings without color … you have people who collect just one artist," Taylor said. Provenance — which refers to the history and ownership of a piece — is often an important consideration when buying art.

WeWork's bankruptcy announcement is particularly rosy about its future. It seems WeWork certainly took that advice to heart when it wrote its announcement of its November 6 bankruptcy filing. But from the bankruptcy announcement, you wouldn't know all that. Rite Aid — which, like WeWork — plans to stay in business, also had a more somber announcement when it filed last month. But if any company is going to seem mildly delusional in its bankruptcy announcement, WeWork certainly has the precedent for it.

Bezos makes third losing bet on real estate
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Ben Winck | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
It’s not the only questionable real estate decision Bezos has made in the past several years. He announced in a Thursday Instagram post that he will move to Miami, leaving the Washington city where he founded Amazon in 1994. Bezos grew up in the south-Florida city in the early 1980s, and he will return to a two-mansion compound worth some $147 million, according to Bloomberg. Miami-based real estate had a renaissance during the pandemic as people sought warmer climates where they could be outside. Still, the founder is no stranger to real estate bets that don’t always make financial sense.

CNN —Photographer Chloe Sherman had rarely used social media, until a chance discovery by her daughter prompted her to revisit her work documenting the queer community in 1990s San Francisco. Although she had previously exhibited some photographs from her time in San Francisco, the majority of her work, which she shot on 35-millimeter film, only existed as negatives. So, after Sherman’s daughter and a friend helped create an Instagram account for her, she began digitizing and uploading her photos onto the platform. In this context, San Francisco was widely seen as a safe haven, with a long history of welcoming LGBTQ people. For Sherman, who had grown up making photographs and later studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, it felt important to document the moment.
