During a virtual roundtable, we asked Business Insider's Workforce Innovation board to tell us how AI would transform companies over the next year. How will the most innovative companies be transformed by AI over the next 12 months? Last year, we had an AI challenge across the company, and a huge percentage of our employees participated. There are a lot of different points of view on what AI will and will not do and how quickly. And that the promise we think AI is going to deliver will probably take longer than we think to come to fruition.

Spruce Pine, North Carolina has no running water or electricity, more than a week after Helene ripped through the town of 2,200. Mines in Spruce Pine produce the world’s purest form of quartz, which plays a central role in chip manufacturing. Now, the town’s exceedingly valuable supply of high-purity quartz is at risk, threatening to cripple the $600 billion global semiconductor industry. “The Spruce Pine community has been hit particularly hard,” Sibelco said in a statement on Sept. 30. For the semiconductor industry, the challenges that any long-term disruption to the Spruce Pine mines would present cannot be overstated, experts say.

Amazon's Wondery is launching a "Wow in the World" toy line, expanding beyond audio content. Wondery aims to build franchises from podcasts, following success with "Dr. Death" and "Morbid." Hard seltzers, spiked seltzers, and their ilk have been marketed as lighter than traditional alcoholic beverages. In the 2010s, the hard seltzers started to pop up, with names like White Claw and Truly, both of which launched in 2016. Advertisement"During the pandemic, hard seltzers really blew up, and I think hard seltzers are one of those ones that were perceived as a little bit of a better-for-you option," said Kaleigh Theriault, an associate director of beverage-alcohol thought leadership at NIQ, a market research firm. The market got saturated, and people started to realize there could be a lot more to canned alcohol than beer and hard seltzers. "So companies are having to innovate more and more, and that has led to some higher-ABV canned cocktails."
