"It's a very momentum-driven market," said Ben Klein, the cofounder at the record label and music-marketing firm Hundred Days. Still, for some artists, albums can be a useful tool for marketing, streaming economics, and nourishing their biggest fans. "If you're capturing all of your fans and the fans are streaming 10 songs or they're streaming 30 songs, it actually makes a big difference on charting and streaming revenue." AdvertisementOf course, writing lots of quality songs for an album is easier said than done. And some artists are wary of letting social-media strategies or streaming incentives bleed into the creative process.

Their answers have rarely surprised me, and I've heard the phrase, "YouTube is king," too many times to count. YouTube didn't always exude confidenceMusical.ly's 2018 TikTok rebrand launched the platform into stardom, shifting creator and audience attention away from YouTube. AdvertisementThe rise of TikTok forced YouTube to fight for eyeballs by introducing its own short-video feature, YouTube Shorts, in 2021 and developing a new team of partner managers and programs to recruit and retain talent. YouTube Shorts hosted a parking-lot-sized drive-thru activation at VidCon 2022, when TikTok was the title sponsor. With all this, it's no surprise YouTube seems to be taking a victory lap around its competitors.

More consolidation, more problems — that's the latest fear gripping the theatrical industry. After a monthslong negotiation process, Paramount and Skydance have struck a merger agreement. Namely, that continued consolidation in the industry will exacerbate production woes that have led to fewer film releases in recent years. Skydance founder David Ellison during an investor call Monday touted that Paramount and Skydance have produced 30 feature films together. However, each company has other producing partners, and it is unclear how this merger could affect production going forward.

New York CNN —“Inside Out 2” has become the fastest-ever animated film to surpass $1 billion globally, shooting past the box office milestone this weekend, just 19 days after its release. “The film’s remarkable success is a testament not only to the incredible creativity of the Pixar team but an example of moviegoing at its very best.”The resounding success of “Inside Out 2” has jolted a sluggish 2024 box office. The movie is the highest grossing film of the year, and the first to pass $1 billion since “Barbie,” which came out last July. Daniel Loria, editorial director at Box Office Pro, which collects sales and showtime data from thousands of movie theaters across the United States, projects this year will see an overall domestic box office total between $8.1 billion and $8.4 billion, down from 2023’s total of more than $9 billion, the highest since the pandemic. Another surprise hit or two, and we may get a lot closer to matching that $9 billion than we all expected coming into the year.”

At a time when the box office is starved for content and audiences seem pickier than ever, Fathom Events is posting record revenue gains. In 2023, Fathom generated $100 million at the box office, a 116% increase over 2019 levels and its highest-grossing year ever. "These audiences are getting to enjoy classic films, either for the first time or for the first time, in a new way. Last year, the film extended its release to five days and snared $7.1 million, making it the highest-grossing classic film release in Fathom history. Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2" could be the first film since Warner Bros.' "Barbie" to top $1 billion at the global box office. "Inside Out 2" has yet to open in Japan, which contributed nearly $33 million to the $850.5 million global total of the first film in 2015. Before "Inside Out 2," no Disney animated feature from Pixar or Walt Disney Animation had generated more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019. "'Inside Out 2's' performance is the culmination of many things," said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. Last year, that audience came out in droves for Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which generated more than $1.36 billion at the global box office.

"Inside Out 2" debuted with an estimated $155 million domestically, the second-highest theatrical opening of an animated film and the first film since Warner Bros.' "Barbie" to top $100 million during its debut. Of note, Disney does not consider its 2019 live-action remake of "The Lion King," which generated $191.7 million during its debut, an animation film. "Let's issue a collective 'welcome back' to Disney, Pixar, and the summer box office," said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory." Typically, these films average $100 million to $200 million openings, with 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" hitting a record $357.1 million. And among those watching most closely are world leaders near and far. Of course, world leaders have generally stayed mum on the issue of which man they prefer – although I would wager that most favor the status quo over a return to the raucous years of Trump’s presidency. Some world leaders have already signaled their aversion to another Trump presidency. But for these foreign leaders, coming out against Trump is a move that is chock full of risks. The stakes in this election are too high for global leaders to stay mum.

CNN —The summer movie season typically starts with a bang during the month of May and, particularly, during Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday) movie ticket sales are estimated at $128.3 million, according to Comscore data provided to CNN. In fact, the US box office is on track to have its lowest-grossing Memorial Day weekend since the $117.1 million seen in 1995, when “Casper” haunted the screens — and that’s not even adjusting for inflation. The tepid Memorial Day weekend continues what’s been a lukewarm start to the summer box office, a movie-going season that’s still reeling from the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes. Industry experts agree that the 2024 box office has been sluggish so far , but remain hopeful that the box office can rebound by the end of the year and beyond.

New York CNN —The summer box office is off to a lukewarm start. Last summer, blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” combined added nearly a billion dollars to the domestic box office, according to Comscore data. “Barring some major overperformances, this summer looks like it’ll be down 20% to 25% in box office grosses between May and August from last year,” said analyst Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

Hollywood is increasingly adapting video games into movies and TV shows. Video game studios are cautious, fearing adaptations could compromise their intellectual properties. But Hollywood has a backup plan: Video games. Ampere found that Hollywood shifted its focus away from comic books in movies and television shows last year in favor of video game adaptations like "The Last of Us." Video game adaptations typically get a bad rap as schlocky retellings, especially from younger gamers.

Some of the highest-profile journalists at NBC are pushing back against the network's hiring of Ronna McDaniel. Chief political analyst Chuck Todd on Sunday said many at NBC are "uncomfortable" with the McDaniel hire. On Monday, "Meet the Press" hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said McDaniel wouldn't appear on their program. Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, brought in $82.4 million in its opening weekend. The film is a much-anticipated sequel to one of the most popular science fiction adaptions in recent years, and helped revive a sleepy box office. Pictures, which distributed the movie. Since the start of the year, the domestic box office has tallied just $866.4 million in ticket sales through Sunday, a nearly 18% drop from the same period in 2023, according to data from Comscore. A boost at the beginning of the year could prove critical to a box office that's still struggling to reclaim $10 billion in domestic annual ticket sales, a mark last seen before the Covid pandemic. While surprise hits like Sony's "Anyone But You" alongside Paramount's "Mean Girls" and "Bob Marley: One Love" have helped fill cinemas, the box office had few blockbuster holdovers from the holidays and limited new offerings in the new year. Last year, the first quarter was buoyed by $263 million in ticket sales from Disney's "Avatar: The Way of Water," which hit theaters in December of the previous year. Similarly, 2022 had more than $200 million in residual sales from Sony and Marvel's 2021 hit "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

New York CNN —“Madame Web” swung to No. In November, “The Marvels” saw a lackluster $47 million in domestic sales its opening weekend, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened in December to a feeble $27.6 million. It’s still too soon to estimate gross domestic sales for “Madame Web,” but, by the time it exited theaters, “Morbius” had made just $73 million. But “Madame Web,” which released February 14, struggled to gain upward momentum even along its six-day opening, which straddled two holidays: Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. NEW YORK (AP) — Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” outperformed expectations to debut at No. But on a weekend that was once expected to go to “Madame Web,” “One Love” emerged as the much-preferred option in theaters, despite largely poor reviews.
