While there was some demand for protection against the prospect of volatility reemerging, overall sentiment across Wall Street had gotten more bullish. Until Wall Street can be sure that the consumer will hold on (or not), conviction is easily shaken. After years of weird times and outsize gains, Wall Street is dancing on a knife's edge. Investors are flocking to small-cap stocks right now, driving this segment of the market to new highs this week. He also noted that the Russell 2000 is outperforming the S & P 500 by the widest margin since November 2021. But according to him, one group of small-cap stocks could do well if rates were to stay higher for longer: regional banks. However, Turnquist cautioned that small-cap growth stocks would find the outlook tougher than small-cap value stocks, as they are more sensitive to economic health. How to play small-caps Investors who have been making a play for small-caps include billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller , who revealed a big bullish position in small-cap stocks last quarter.

Elhedery named as third HSBC CEO in less than eight years
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
HSBC has appointed its Chief Financial Officer Georges Elhedery as its next CEO, the bank said Wednesday. While the 160-year-old lender did consider external candidates, it has traditionally appointed its CEO from within. Elhedery’s appointment comes as HSBC (HSBC) tries to shift from restructuring to growth, at a time when helpful interest rate hikes may have peaked and geopolitical tensions simmer. Elhedery began his career in banking as a trader before joining HSBC in 2005. Quinn, who led HSBC for five years, will remain CEO until Elhedery starts in the role.

Much of the S&P 500’s gains were concentrated in the Magnificent Seven big tech names, while other stocks lagged behind. Coming into this year, Wall Street projected that the Fed would ease rates as many as six times in 2024. What could be in store for the stock market during the second half of 2024? “I feel very, very good about the values of my three children, and I have 100% trust in how they will carry things out,” Buffett told the Journal. Previously, Buffett had said his will stated that more than 99% of his estate was earmarked for philanthropic usage to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the four charities connected to his family: the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Investors seeking to boost returns in their 60/40 portfolio should look to what AllianceBernstein calls "the magnificent others." "If you're finding companies that are giving you dividend growth rates of anywhere say from 10% to 12%, well north of inflation, that has a nice compounding effect," he said. What makes these dividend-paying stocks appealing is that free cash flow is expected to grow roughly 7% over the next five to six years, he said. Instead, investors should focus on companies that have free cash flow, a strong balance sheet and are competitively positioned, he said. Within dividend-paying names, Czaicki sees three specific areas of opportunity: energy transition and security, supply chain security, and national defense and cybersecurity.

New York CNN —Nvidia’s eye-popping gains this year have helped propel the stock market to repeated record highs. Can Nvidia’s blockbuster gains continue, and what does its outsized market cap mean for the stock rally? Now everyone says, “the market is dependent on Nvidia’s earnings.” You’re going to see a kind of a shift in market cap over the years. “These lower mortgage rates coupled with the gradually improving housing supply bodes well for the housing market.”Still, mortgage rates remain higher than anything seen in the decade before 2022, the year the Federal Reserve began to raise interest rates to combat inflation. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates but its actions do influence them through the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield, which moves in anticipation of the Fed’s policy moves.

The EU has a standard 10% duty on imported EVs, but is set to provisionally raise those fees for Chinese EVs starting July 4. Citi analysts on Monday said the tariff rate could be "hiked to ~25-30% from 10% currently, while our risk scenario (40% probability) envisages a hike in the tariff rate to 30-50%." When it comes to dividend funds, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is “the gold standard,” according to Morningstar. The exchange-traded fund seeks to track the total return of the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. Therefore, it is not like its peers that track a broad market index, Jackson pointed out. It also looks at return on equity, dividend yield and the dividend growth rate over the past five years. After the stocks are selected, the index market cap weighs them, with a maximum position around 4%.
