DeSantis signed a six-week abortion ban in Florida this spring and has positioned himself as a strong opponent of abortion rights, which has turned off some major donors. But he had generally dodged questions about whether he would support a federal ban, and if so, after how many weeks of gestation. In recent weeks, DeSantis, whose campaign is aggressively courting religious conservatives, has doubled down on his opposition to abortion rights in interviews and digital ads. Scott and former Vice President Mike Pence have pledged to sign an abortion ban of 15 weeks or less should they be elected. Former Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said she would sign a federal abortion ban as well, but has stressed that Congress is unlikely to pass such a measure.

CNN —We tracked how long each candidate talked at the second Republican primary presidential debate. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy led with over 12 minutes of speaking time during the debate, which saw candidates scrambling for airtime and talking over each other as they jockeyed for opportunities to distinguish themselves. Doug Burgum of North Dakota had the least amount of time to get his message out, speaking just under eight minutes. Donald Trump didn’t participate in Wednesday night’s event, and the former president maintains a generous lead in the polls ahead of the other candidates. [1/8] Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump addresses auto workers as he skips the second GOP debate, in Clinton Township, Michigan, U.S., September 27, 2023. "Donald Trump is lying about President Biden's agenda to distract from his failed track record of trickle-down tax cuts, closed factories, and jobs outsourced to China," Biden's campaign said in a statement while Trump spoke. The UAW has to date not backed either presidential candidate, making it the only major union not to endorse Biden. The UAW leadership has welcomed Biden's support, however, and spoken about Trump and his record in scathing terms. Promising to end the government's EV push if elected, Trump urged the UAW to back him in the presidential race.

Republican presidential candidates talk over each other during the second Republican candidates' debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, September 27, 2023. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a frequent Trump critic, chimed in, saying Trump was "afraid" and mocking him as "Donald Duck" for skipping the debate. Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the November 2024 election, was also a frequent target for the Republican candidates, who castigated his handling of the economy and the southern border with Mexico. "They're all job candidates," Trump said dismissively of the seven Republicans at the debate. Haley, meanwhile, was hoping a second consecutive strong debate performance will convince some Republican donors she has the best odds of unseating Trump.

The union did not elaborate ahead of a planned video address by UAW President Shawn Fain at 10 a.m. About 18,300 UAW members are on strike, but that is only about 12% of the total number of union members working at the three automakers. The UAW launched its walkouts on Sept. 15, its first simultaneous strikes at General Motors, Chrysler parent Stellantis and Ford. Analysts estimate GM, Ford and Stellantis earn as much as $15,000 per vehicle on each of their respective large pickup truck models. The UAW, which represents 46,000 workers at GM, 57,000 at Ford and 43,000 at Stellantis, began negotiations with the companies in July.

A growing legal headache for early frontrunner Donald Trump could pave the way for a "dark horse" Republican presidential candidate to win the backing of the party in the race for the White House. That's the view of one former U.S. ambassador ahead of the Republican Party's second televised presidential debate on Wednesday evening. The former president, who skipped the first Republican Party presidential debate in Wisconsin last month, boasts a lead of more than 40 points over his nearest competition, according to a recent national NBC News poll. Trump has said he doesn't plan to take part in the second Republican debate on Wednesday evening and will instead deliver a speech to autoworkers in Detroit. Republican Party donors have encouraged Youngkin to enter the race and challenge Trump's sizable lead in the polls.

CNN —The second 2024 Republican presidential primary debate ended just as it began: with former President Donald Trump – who hasn’t yet appeared alongside his rivals onstage – as the party’s dominant front-runner. “Tonight’s GOP debate was as boring and inconsequential as the first debate, and nothing that was said will change the dynamics of the primary contest,” Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita said in a statement. DeSantis, Pence duck health care questions while Haley pouncesDespite the efforts of moderators to pin them down, DeSantis and Pence struggled to respond when challenged on their respective records on health care. A messy first hourThe first hour of the second GOP primary debate was beset by interruptions, crosstalk and protracted squabbles between the candidates and moderators over speaking time. Further complicating the matter, some of the highest polling candidates – DeSantis and Haley – were among those least willing to dive into the muck during the first hour.

Trump has slammed the president for the visit, claiming Biden “had no intention” of walking the picket line until Trump said he would make a speech in Michigan. In the absence of an announced plan from the White House, speculation spread through the UAW ranks that Biden would go to whatever picket line was closest to the airport. Amid mounting political pressure to ramp up his public support, Biden is expressing solidarity with the union members, who are striking against the Big Three automakers – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis – for a second week. Union members, once a reliable Democratic voting bloc, have gradually gravitated to Republican candidates, according to CNN polls and the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation. The historic presidential picket line appearance will reaffirm his commitment to the critical voting and organizing group ahead of the 2024 election.

Nearly as soon as the United Auto Workers went on strike earlier this month, Biden voiced support for the workers. Wearing a UAW ball-cap and speaking through a bullhorn, Biden’s overt support for the striking workers was a break from his predecessors’ attempts at neutrality. Biden was invited by the UAW to join their picket line, and has spoken out forcefully in favor of the workers. Trump, who is not planning on joining a picket line, will speak instead at a non-union facility. Speaking at the picket line on Tuesday, Fain praised Biden for being the first president to join a picket line.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 - Seven Republican candidates will take part in the second 2024 Republican presidential debate on Wednesday in California. FEWER CANDIDATES - AND NO TRUMP AGAINThe qualifying rules for the second debate are more stringent than the first last month, when eight candidates were on stage in Milwaukee. As he did in August, Trump will hold a rival event at the same time as the debate. Once the clear second-place candidate behind Trump, DeSantis' campaign has floundered as some other candidates closed the gap with him in recent polls. After Ramaswamy's pugnacious performance in the August debate, expect to see more attacks on him and his lack of experience, especially by Haley and Pence, both of whom had strong outings last month.

The second Republican presidential debate without Donald J. Trump is missing the front-runner’s star power, but the performances of his rivals on Wednesday are still expected to be deeply consequential — forecasting whether the 2024 field of Republicans will consolidate around a single Trump alternative. Ron DeSantis of Florida has been the chief challenger to Mr. Trump. Among those watching at home will be some of the Republican Party’s biggest donors who have so far held out from backing any of the candidates. Major contributors are planning to watch the second debate carefully, according to people in contact with several of them, in order to see who, if anyone, they might rally behind in the coming months. All seven candidates at the debate are facing the dual-track challenge of trying to emerge as a singular rival of Mr. Trump without letting the former president entirely run away with the contest before that happens.

They gave everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry,” Biden said Monday from the White House. Biden is also leaning in on his union support at a time when labor enjoys broad support from the public, with 67% of Americans approving of labor unions in an August Gallup poll. White House officials dismissed the notion that Trump forced their hand and noted that Biden was headed to Michigan at the request of UAW President Shawn Fain, who last week invited the sitting president to join the strikers. “He is pro-UAW, he is pro-workers, that is this president,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. Biden and Trump bid for blue collar votesIn an extraordinary show of support, President Biden plans to join striking autoworkers on the picket line in Michigan on Tuesday. It comes a day before Donald Trump is expected to speak to union members in Detroit instead of participating in the second Republican primary debate. The competing visits come as the two home in on battleground states ahead of next year’s election. But their appearances also reveal a political battle to become the voice of blue collar workers at a time when both candidates are struggling to win over mainstream voters and even some within their own parties. is somewhat troublesome for him: It includes incentives for automakers to make more electric vehicles, which labor leaders say will depend on non-union jobs and require fewer workers.

Biden will join the striking United Auto Workers on the picket line — a first for any president. Trump, like Biden, will also head to Detroit and hold an event to garner support for his 2024 run. Many unions have endorsed Biden but blue-collar workers are split on who they're voting for. "He is pro-UAW, he is pro-workers, that is this president," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. If opinion polls are to be believed, Donald Trump has the 2024 Republican presidential nomination in the bag. But in a recent Times Opinion focus group with 13 Republican voters who are looking at candidates other than Mr. Trump, the idea that the race was all but over sounded off base, either because they don’t know any other Republicans who want Mr. Trump back in office or because he seems beatable for the nomination. “My Republican friends say they are for anybody but Trump,” said one focus group participant, Carrie, a 55-year-old from Michigan. In the end, we wanted to know, if the race came down in 2024 to Mr. Trump and President Biden, would they give in and vote for Mr. Trump? It was the most painful question for some of them — and yielded bad news for Mr. Trump but no silver lining for Mr. Biden, either.

DeSantis is badly trailing former President Donald Trump in polls of 2024 Republican presidential nomination contenders. His agreement to debate Newsom is highly unusual. Not only does DeSantis not remotely have the GOP nomination secured, but Newsom is not even running for the Democratic presidential nomination.
