Mark Robinson, Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and candidate for Governor, delivers remarks prior to Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speaking at a campaign event at Harrah's Cherokee Center on August 14, 2024 in Asheville, North Carolina. The political network largely funded by billionaire industrialist Charles Koch has been quietly backing North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson despite a litany of controversies, according to records uncovered by CNBC. Though Robinson has denied he wrote the scores of posts, at least four of his top aides from his North Carolina gubernatorial campaign resigned within days of the report's publication. The move by Americans for Prosperity to back Robinson from a policy perspective surprised some North Carolina Republican strategists.

The SALT deduction allows tax payers to deduct up to $10,000 of property, sales or income taxes that have already been paid to state and local governments. Historically, most of the tax payers who claim the deduction reside in high tax states such as New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and California. There was no cap on SALT prior to the Trump tax bill. Some of those recent conversations have featured Trump's new stance on bringing back the full SALT deduction, despite his bill being the cause for the $10,000 cap. Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., told CNBC in a statement that the SALT cap is "hurting" her constituents and said Trump's most recent take on SALT shows he's listened to "Americans across the country hurting from the SALT cap."

AdvertisementIt's a story all too familiar for some older Americans: An unexpected health crisis derails their retirement planning. With insufficient help from health insurance or Social Security, medical bills eat up any savings or income they have. Jones, who gets $2,200 a month in Social Security, has had to take on part-time work, which made her ineligible for some federal assistance. She paid for chemo out of pocket, spending her way through her retirement savings and maxing out her credit cards. Amend said it's crucial for older Americans to believe everything will be OK, noting "your mindset perpetuates what your outcome will be."

Vice President Kamala Harris raised $47 million in the first 24 hours following her Tuesday night debate against former President Donald Trump, a Harris campaign spokesman told CNBC. The newest Harris fundraising numbers mark the latest blow for the Trump campaign, which has been lagging behind Harris in the fundraising game. The Harris political operation recently announced that it raised $361 million in August, more than double the $130 million Trump's team raised last month. The news of Harris' $47 million day was first reported by The New York Times.

Wall Street relationshipsOne of Vance's earliest interactions with Wall Street came shortly after the November 2016 presidential election, when he headlined a lunch in New York to discuss his newly published memoir. John Underwood, a longtime managing director at Goldman Sachs, encouraged his allies to support and raise money for Vance's Senate campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. He told them the Trump campaign would need "hundreds of millions of dollars" to compete with Vice President Kamala Harris' fundraising surge. The Ohio Republican's opposition to Wall Street was on full display during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July. "Wall Street barons crashed the economy and American builders went out of business," Vance said in his nomination acceptance speech.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will square off Tuesday against Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, in a prime-time debate that could alter the course of an unprecedented race for the White House. It will also be the first time Harris and Trump have ever met in person, just eight weeks before the Nov. 5 election. Polling averages indicate the race is effectively tied at the national level, while surveys of the key battleground states show Trump and Harris within a few points of each other, and well within the polls' margins of error.

The auction house believes this to be the highest sum ever paid for an artwork at a Maine auction. But inclusion in a major catalog, or the backing of a big auction house, can increase a painting’s value manyfold. A wild week of trading on Wall Street ended with the S & P 500 back roughly where it started, but the lessons learned by whipsawed investors over those five days could determine what happens next. The S & P 500 had its worst day since 2022 on Monday, and then its best since 2022 on Thursday. But with the S & P 500 ending the week down less than 0.1% in a calm session on Friday, the market seems to have stabilized. .SPX 5D mountain The S & P 500 finished the week nearly flat. The VIX, Wall Street's go-to snapshot of market volatility, is at its highest point since the onset of the pandemic. And hedge funds are sifting through the wreckage, with some looking to survive and others planning to pounce. In any market meltdown, there are clear winners and losers given the strategies and positioning of different firms. The yen carry trade has also likely wrong-footed many macro funds, several industry veterans said. It also slowed dealmaking, annoying private equity investors whose capital was tied up in older vintage funds.

Tel Aviv, Israel CNN —As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrates what he sees as major victories against Hamas and Hezbollah this week, the mood in Tel Aviv is far from celebratory. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that his country “struck crushing blows” to the “the three H’s” – Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, all Iranian-backed, all fierce Israeli foes. Hamas also blamed Israel for the assassination of their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on Wednesday in Tehran. Netanyahu’s tone stands at odds with the mood on the ground in Tel Aviv, including among families of the hostages still in Gaza. Polls have repeatedly shown that most Israelis prioritize the release of hostages over continued war.

The presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris said Friday that its political operation raised $310 million in July, dwarfing the tally raised for the Republican nominee Donald Trump in the same month. Harris' team raised the eye-popping sum between the campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees. Trump's team said its larger political organization, which includes the former president's campaign and joint fundraising committees, raised $138.7 million in July. Harris' massive fundraising haul underscores renewed enthusiasm from Democratic donors, some of whom were hesitant to open their checkbooks after Biden's disastrous debate performance against Trump in late June. "More than 3 million donors made over 4.2 million contributions – with more than 2 million donors making their first donation this cycle," the campaign said in a press release.
