After years of starts and stops at the box office, Disney appears to have hit a groove in 2024. Its latest Pixar film, “Inside Out 2,” is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, topping $1.5 billion at the global box office. And the box office hits aren’t expected to stop there. Disney has long been a box office champion, driving significant ticket sales domestically and globally. In the year before the pandemic, Disney had seven theatrical releases top $1 billion at the box office.

Robert Downey Jr. speaks onstage during the Marvel Studios Panel in Hall H at SDCC in San Diego, California on July 27, 2024. After its worst performance of all-time at the box office last November, the studio is back on top with "Deadpool & Wolverine." It's a promising development for the Disney -owned Marvel Studios, which has struggled to maintain box office momentum in the wake of 2019's historic "Avengers: Endgame." At the same time Marvel Studios was still reeling from pandemic-related production shutdowns and dual Hollywood labor strikes. And that's good news for a studio that has generated more than $30 billion in box office since 2008.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" shattered box office records this weekend, tallying $205 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening, the highest debut of 2024 and of an R-rated film ever. The film outpaced analysts' expectations, which called for an opening haul between $160 million and $180 million. The previous two Deadpool films, both rated R, were produced and released through 20th Century Fox. Similar to previous entries in the MCU, "Deadpool & Wolverine" benefitted from fan fervor. The strong opening of "Deadpool & Wolverine" comes after a post-pandemic box office slump for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thursday night preview numbers are folded into Friday's box office haul and calculated as part of a film's three-day opening weekend. The latest entrant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the most anticipated releases of 2024 and the first R-rated film in the comic book franchise. Disney and Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" has secured $38.5 million in Thursday previews and is on pace for a domestic debut north of $150 million, which would be a record for an R-rated film. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is expected to tally between $160 million and $180 million at the domestic box office during its debut. This haul would mark the highest opening weekend for a film in 2024 and the biggest debut of an R-rated film ever.

Those marks include the highest domestic opening of 2024 and the biggest debut ever for an R-rated film. "Deadpool and Wolverine" is the 34th film to be released under the MCU banner and the first to garner an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association. The previous two Deadpool films, both rated R, were produced and released through 20th Century Fox. Jacob said "Deadpool and Wolverine" is filled with Easter eggs and audiences will return to try and see them all. There's also a genuine curiosity about how the MCU's first R-rated film will play out and hold to the qualities which made the first two Deadpool films and [Jackman's 2017 Wolverine film] 'Logan' so popular."

On Tuesday, "Inside Out 2" surpassed $1.46 billion in global ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing animated feature of all time, usurping another Disney title, "Frozen II." The record-breaking box office for "Inside Out 2" comes after a series of theatrical hits and misses from the company, especially from its animated releases. In particular, Pixar has suffered at the box office in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Of note, Disney does not consider its 2019 "The Lion King" to be an animated feature despite nearly the entire film being computer animated. Otherwise, it would be the highest-grossing animated feature, as it collected more than $1.6 billion during its theatrical run.

AMC Entertainment on Wednesday warned investors of declines in key metrics during the second quarter, sending its shares down more than 7%. It also said it expects to post a net loss of $32.8 million compared with a profit of $8.6 million in the second quarter of 2023. "This explains the weakness in our preliminary Q2 2024 results, as contrasted with the same quarter of a year ago." "But if looking only at the full quarter, the lay observer might easily miss the incredibly good news that transpired within the second quarter," Aron said. "This in turn suggests that AMC should enjoy increasing adjusted EBITDA, if as and when overall industry revenues are climbing.

More consolidation, more problems — that's the latest fear gripping the theatrical industry. After a monthslong negotiation process, Paramount and Skydance have struck a merger agreement. Namely, that continued consolidation in the industry will exacerbate production woes that have led to fewer film releases in recent years. Skydance founder David Ellison during an investor call Monday touted that Paramount and Skydance have produced 30 feature films together. However, each company has other producing partners, and it is unclear how this merger could affect production going forward.

Amy Poehler and Maya Hawke voice Joy and Anxiety, respectively, in Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2." The animated feature has tallied $1.014 billion worldwide as of Sunday, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 and the first film since Warner Bros.′ "Barbie" to top $1 billion at the global box office. A once prolifically successful studio, Pixar has suffered at the box office in the wake of the pandemic. As a result, before "Inside Out 2," no Disney animated feature from Pixar or its Walt Disney Animation studio had generated more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019. Last year, the film extended its release to five days and snared $7.1 million, making it the highest-grossing classic film release in Fathom history. Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2" could be the first film since Warner Bros.' "Barbie" to top $1 billion at the global box office. "Inside Out 2" has yet to open in Japan, which contributed nearly $33 million to the $850.5 million global total of the first film in 2015. "'Inside Out 2's' performance is the culmination of many things," said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. A big piece has been missing from the box office — family films. A handful of kid-friendly hits — Universal's "Super Mario Bros." chief among them — have boosted ticket sales. So far in 2024, the domestic box office is down 23% from last year and trails 40% from 2019. More kid-friendly hits, like the coming "Despicable Me 4," could be one of the keys to a box office rebound. "Inside Out 2" debuted with an estimated $155 million domestically, the second-highest theatrical opening of an animated film and the first film since Warner Bros.' "Let's issue a collective 'welcome back' to Disney, Pixar, and the summer box office," said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory." Typically, these films average $100 million to $200 million openings, with 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" hitting a record $357.1 million. Long-expected layoffs are hitting Pixar Animation Studios on Tuesday. Pixar will lay off about 175 employees, or around 14% of the studio's workforce, a spokesperson for parent company Walt Disney told CNBC. Initially, it was reported that 20% of the animation studio's employees would be laid off. When theaters closed during the pandemic, Disney sought to pad the company's fledgling streaming service Disney+ with content, stretching its creative teams thin and sending theatrical movies straight to digital. As a result, no Disney animated feature from Pixar or Walt Disney Animation has generated more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019.

Netflix's cheaper, ad-supported tier has amassed 40 million global monthly active users, the company said Wednesday. That's nearly double the 23 million figure the streaming giant shared in January. The company also said it would launch its own advertising platform and no longer partner with Microsoft for that technology. The tech giant will remain a programmatic advertising partner, but will also be joined by other ad tech companies including The Trade Desk, Google Display & Video 360 and Magnite. The streaming giant joined its media peers for the second time in making an annual pitch to lock in advertising for its platform.

For the first time since 2009, the box office doesn't have a Marvel film to kick off the summer movie season — and it shows. This year, the headline film for the first summer weekend was Universal's "The Fall Guy." The result could send the 2024 summer box office down as much as $800 million compared to 2023, according to Comscore's Paul Dergarabedian, and have ripple effects for the whole year. At present, analysts believe the summer movie season will exceed $3 billion in ticket sales, but just barely. Before Covid, the summer box office consistently topped more than $4 billion.
