THE ENIGMA GIRLS: How Ten Teenagers Broke Ciphers, Kept Secrets and Helped Win World War II, by Candace FlemingAs war raged in Europe in 1941, Sarah Norton, the 18-year-old daughter of an English lord, received a letter in a plain brown envelope with no return address. “You are to report to Station X at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire in four days’ time,” said the letter, signed by a mysterious “Commander Travis.” “That is all you need to know.”Little did Sarah realize she was being recruited for Britain’s top-secret wartime code-breaking operation. “This is the story of a handful of young women — teenagers really — who left their childhoods behind and walked into the unknown,” Candace Fleming writes in “The Enigma Girls,” her beguiling new account of their contributions. “For most of their lives, they never breathed a word about their war experiences.”We learn about 10 of these real-life conscripts. New Offer Seeks to Revive Collapsed Trucker Yellow

Yellow was the third-largest carrier in trucking’s less-than-truckload sector, in which freight from multiple customers is combined in a single trailer. Photo: Charlie Riedel/Associated PressBankrupt trucker Yellow is considering an offer to revive the carrier and rehire thousands of its former workers as it weighs competing bids at a court-supervised auction that would disperse its nationwide network of truck terminals to rivals. Sarah Riggs Amico, executive chair of auto carrier Jack Cooper Transport, is leading a bid that would replace Yellow, which shut down over the summer, with a smaller, leaner trucking company that aims to win back some of the billions of dollars worth of freight business that has shifted to a range of other carriers.

It follows the successful transatlantic crossing by a Gulfstream G600 business jet using the same fuel last week. SAF is key toward reducing those emissions, but it is costly and accounts for less than 0.1% of total global jet fuel in use today. The fuel used to power Tuesday's flight is mostly made from used cooking oil and waste animal fat mixed with a small amount of synthetic aromatic kerosene made from waste corn, Virgin Atlantic said. Yet the 2030 target looks challenging given SAF's small volumes and its high cost, right now about three to five times as much as regular jet fuel. Virgin said the engines on the flight would be drained of SAF and tested before it returns to service using regular fuel.

SummaryCompanies Aims for aerospace margin of 15-17%Expects medium-term annual operating profit of 2.8 bln stgShares rise 6.5%LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Rolls-Royce (RR.L) aims to quadruple profit in the next five years by boosting the performance of its jet engines and bearing down on costs in boss Tufan Erginbilgic's masterplan for Britain's most prestigious engineering company. That would be driven by surge in profit margins at its civil aerospace business to 15-17% from 2.5% last year. Agency Partners analyst Nick Cunningham said the targets implied Rolls-Royce was willing to shed revenues in exchange for better profitability. "If so, that is a deeper culture change from Rolls-Royce’s traditional market share optimisation approach of past decades," he said. "We will capture market share every year, but in a profitable way," he said.

When Yellow abruptly shuttered its operations in the summer and filed for bankruptcy protection, few thought that a buyer would emerge and try to revive the long-troubled trucking giant. The plan rests, however, on getting the Treasury Department to allow Yellow to postpone repayment of a $700 million rescue loan that it made to the company in 2020. But the Treasury may not accept the plan because there are legal obstacles to extending the loan. Some trucking analysts say reviving Yellow will be hard because many of its customers will have moved on to other trucking companies that are much better run than the old Yellow. But Sarah Riggs Amico, the trucking executive leading the deal, said only her plan could bring back thousands of jobs, adding that she had the experience to build a leaner company in partnership with the Teamsters and assemble an executive team that can win back customers.

The often-isolating experience of new motherhood in Western culture also plays into the trend, Ms. Snelgrove wrote. “Some of this mom-identity-proclaiming fashion could be read as a cry for connection. If you’re expected to be performing as a professional while your heart is elsewhere, the desire to keep the kids close via one of these pieces is understandable.”While initials are popular for first-time mothers, other women prefer more discreet markers of motherhood. She has also paid £790 at auction for a vintage Elsa Peretti for Tiffany pendant with three hearts of white, yellow and rose gold to represent her family. “As a single mum it felt important that I’m included, too,” she said.
