Marchers in San Francisco's Gay Freedom Day parade carry a banner with a quote from Jimmy Carter on June 26, 1977. “They did not want a photo op with the president and these leaders,” Kirchick said, referring to the Carter administration. Bronski and other historians say that while Carter’s efforts to move the needle on gay rights may seem “small” by today’s standards, he planted the seeds for future presidents. ‘Jesus never said a word about homosexuality’Long after leaving the White House, Carter continued to vocally support gay Americans. And Carter — who taught Sunday school since he was 18 — used an atypical means of reason to justify his support: Christianity.

Will Ferrell caused a bit of a stir on Sunday when he attended the Philadelphia Flyers-Los Angeles Kings game in Los Angeles while dressed as Buddy the Elf from his hit 2003 movie “Elf.”Ferrell didn’t appear quite as wholesome as his alter ego was in the movie, though. He also looked a bit grizzled, perhaps from all the work he just wrapped up working as Santa’s helper. His presence at the Kings game was a gift for fans who were amused at the sight of a rundown looking Ferrell. Ferrell may have been a good luck charm for the Kings, too. The team rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 5-4, the team’s seventh straight home victory.

CNN —Looks like Buddy the Elf is trading in maple syrup for an ice cold beer. Will Ferrell attended the Kings-Flyers game at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena Sunday dressed up as his iconic character from the beloved 2003 holiday movie “Elf,” and Buddy was looking a little worse for the wear this time. Buddy’s “disgruntled” look is because he had a “tough holiday season,” according to FanDuel Sports Network reporter Carrlyn Bathe, who spoke to Buddy at the game. “Elf” was directed by Jon Favreau and starred Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, the late James Cann, Mary Steenbergen, Ed Asner, Peter Dinklage and Bob Newhart, among others. Here’s hoping the next time we see Buddy, he’s back to indulging in the sweeter things life brings.

CNN —It’s no surprise that a year filled with extreme weather won’t be going out quietly with stormy conditions on the way for parts of the United States on New Year’s Eve, including some of the most populated areas of the Northeast. It’ll be quite wet for New York City’s iconic New Year’s Eve celebrations. City officials advised visitors to prepare for rain and noted that large umbrellas are not allowed in Times Square viewing areas. A few thunderstorms are possible anywhere from North Carolina to southern New England within the larger area of rain, including in New York City, Philadelphia and Boston. Being from Southern California, many would ask why I'd want to spend the money to go to Walt Disney World in Florida when I had Disneyland in my backyard. It would be our first trip to Disney World without kids in decades, and it felt weird. We headed first to Universal Studios and a two-night stay at the Royal Pacific Resort Hotel. The trip brought back so many memoriesBeing at Disney World just as a couple brought back a lot of memories. We also spent another $2,080 on taxes, dining, and souvenirs on our Disney gift card from our Chase Disney Rewards Visa.

Disney World previously announced other money-saving perks, including complimentary parking at resorts (it used to charge, much to the annoyance of guests). “They’ve made a lot of enhancements, and that’s helped us,” said Greg Antonelle, owner of MickeyTravels, an authorized Disney vacation planner. Both Disney World (Florida) and Disneyland (California) tickets can cost more than $100 per person per day. Instead of riding a Santa rally, US stocks have been stuck in a slump. Here are the four sectors that investors are moving their money to now. Christmas has come and gone, but the so-called "Santa Claus rally" that US stocks enjoyed in past years is nowhere to be found. Money also flowed into six of the 11 market sectors, though four saw outsize attention: technology, communication services, industrials, and consumer staples. AdvertisementEven still, it's worth tracking where investors are placing their bets — and it's also helpful to note which sectors are most recommended by leading investment firms heading into 2025.

This year, at least 52 people were killed in tornado outbreaks through November, according to preliminary figures from NOAA. Another surprise was 2024’s considerable uptick in the occurrence of strong tropical tornadoes — tornadoes produced in hurricanes. Of all recorded tornadoes produced by tropical systems that have made landfall in the U.S., less than 1% have been EF-3 or stronger. This year, four of the five hurricanes that made landfall in the U.S. produced tornadoes of EF-3 intensity. Given those lingering unknowns, teasing out any direct links between climate change and specific tornado outbreaks remains tricky.

LOS ANGELES — A California appeals court has overturned the rape conviction of former San Francisco 49er Dana Stubblefield after determining prosecutors made racially discriminatory statements during the Black man’s trial. The appeals court said prosecutors used “racially discriminatory language” that required them to overturn Stubblefield’s conviction. The case was “infected with tremendous error from the minute we started the trial,” said Stubblefield’s lead attorney, Kenneth Rosenfeld. She later received a text from Stubblefield saying he wanted to pay her for her time that day, and she went back to the house. By saying Stubblefield’s race was a factor in law enforcement’s decision not to search his house, prosecutors implied the house would’ve been searched and a gun found had Stubblefield not been Black, the appeals court said.
