What little suspense is left in the year revolves around whether the S & P 500 can close at a historic high. Closing the year at a historic high is a fairly rare event — it's only happened eight times since 1926, and only four times since 1963, according to S & P Global: 2020, 2013, 1999, 1991, 1963, 1958, 1954, 1928. So far, the S & P is up 0.9% in these first four of the seven days. The S & P internals are almost the opposite of where they were a year ago. S & P 500: overbought and expensive: Relative Strength Indicator (RSI): 72 (overbought) % stocks over 50-day- moving average: 89% (high, overbought) Forward earnings P/E: 19.6 (expensive) Earnings growth: 11% (high) Markets are positioned very bullish.

Friday is the official start of the Santa Claus rally. What the Santa Claus Rally is, and isn't Over the years, Jeff Hirsch of the Stock Trader's Almanac has repeatedly told me the key to understanding the Santa Claus rally is that it is not a trading strategy, it is an indicator. Fortunately, a negative Santa Claus rally period doesn't happen very often, only 12 times since 1969 (less than 25% of the time). In the years when the Santa Claus period is negative, the S & P is up an average of only 5.0%, versus an average gain of 9.1% in all years. You can see this very clearly in this chart: The common explanation is that: 1) markets are stronger with a sitting president because a sitting President can pull levers to help the economy, and 2) markets tend to be weaker with no sitting president because of increased uncertainty around economic outcomes.

Then we'll review what I think will happen into year end and a possible market hedge idea. FedEx gave us a sense of how things are looking when they reported earnings Tuesday evening, and it wasn't good. We got all of them out of FedEx earnings, they hit a dinger, in a bad way, which disappointed the Street to say the least. Market downside reversal I was surprised when, after dipping slightly on the open the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied mildly. Hedge The S & P 500 SPDR Trust (SPY) January $460 puts were $2.98 as of the close Wednesday.

The simplest explanation for Wednesday's sell-off was that the market was dramatically overvalued and due for a pullback. Look at the Breakwave Dry Bulk Shipping ETF (BDRY). BDRY is essentially a play on global shipping, which is itself a play on the state of the global economy. There's an ETF for global shipping companies If you'd rather play global shipping companies directly, there's an ETF for that as well. If this year's early Santa Claus rally is any indication, investors may be getting too optimistic about the prospects of a rate cut early next year, according to Wolfe Research. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 hit fresh year-to-date closing highs on Friday. .SPX YTD mountain S & P 500 YTD chart Investors have been sending stocks flying on the back of expectations that the Federal Reserve will adopt more dovish policy next year. Senyek's base line scenario for 2024 sees these factors bringing the S & P 500 to 4,250 by year-end 2024, implying about an 8% drop. Such worries flared after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack into southern Israel but subsided in recent weeks. Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, said a widening conflict could push some investors to take profits on the recent rally in stocks. Why Adults Are More Imaginative Than Children
  + stars: | 2023-12-02 | by ( Andrew Shtulman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The idea that children are imaginative but adults are not is a popular theme in children’s literature. “Do you really mean we won’t be able to hear that when we’re older?” asks one of the children. “You’ll hear all right,” explains Mary Poppins, “but you won’t understand.”In these stories, children are open to possibilities that elude the adult mind. They grasp extraordinary ideas that adults cannot fathom and have clever insights that adults do not appreciate. Children play elaborate make-believe games with their toys and role-playing games with their peers.

In September, historically the weakest month for stocks, the S&P 500 fell nearly 5%. The S&P 500 gained nearly 9% gain in November, historically a strong month for the index. Overall, December has been the second-best month for the S&P 500, with the index up an average of 1.54% for the month since 1945, according to CFRA. New York CNN —The US stock market has rebounded from its months-long rut. Stocks finished out their best month of the year on Thursday, breaking a three-month streak of declines for all the major indexes. “The only way I see a rally continuing is if the bond market behaves itself,” said Richard Steinberg, chief market strategist at The Colony Group. While those stocks have remained at the top of Wall Street’s scoreboard, the recent rally has encompassed a wider range of stocks. Long-neglected pockets of the stock market, from beaten-down financials to small-caps to cyclical stocks, have climbed higher in recent weeks.

The Dow, meanwhile, managed to shake off a three-month losing streak, also rising by about 8.8% and notching its best month since October 2022. October’s Personal Consumption Expenditures Index, the Fed’s favored inflation gauge, fell to its lowest level since the spring of 2021. JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska (AP) — Santa Claus’ sleigh took on new responsibilities in rural Alaska this week when delivering gifts to an Alaska Native village. Santa’s ride, an Alaska Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, was shuttling Santa, Mrs. Claus, volunteer elves and gifts in shifts Wednesday to provide the children of Tuluksak some Christmas cheer. The flights originated about 35 miles (56 kilometers) southwest, from the hub community of Bethel, the guard said in a release. The Alaska National Guard for decades has delivered gifts, supplies and sometimes Christmas itself to tiny rural communities dotting the nation’s largest and largely roadless state. The guard stepped up, taking donated gifts and supplies to the village.
