New York CNN —Nearly 900,000 Americans sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner this week will have unions – and the double-digit pay increases they won – to thank. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday that U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping remained far apart on the status of Taiwan after their high-profile meeting last week during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco. "President Xi did express the view that it's important for Taiwan and mainland China to unify. "But President Biden said our policy remains unchanged from what it's always been with respect to Taiwan." Even after their talks last week, Biden and Xi's deadlock on the issue could have military ramifications, despite Xi's insistence that he does not want military conflict. Already, Taiwanese officials have reported escalating Chinese military action around the island in recent months.

The dispute between New Hampshire and the Democratic Party also means Biden’s name will be missing from the New Hampshire presidential primary ballot this year. Biden ousted Iowa and New Hampshire from the first spots on the party's nominating calendar in favor of South Carolina, a more diverse state. Biden credits South Carolina and its large Black population with catapulting him to the White House in 2020. The winner of the New Hampshire primary is not expected to get any delegates necessary to secure the nomination, making South Carolina the first vote of any consequence. For Democrats, South Carolina’s primary will be on Feb. 3, followed by Nevada’s on Feb. 6.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, who with Blinken opened the APEC ministerial session, said the San Francisco meeting came at a time of "great uncertainty and challenges" for the region. CNN —The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expanding its infectious disease surveillance program at four major US airports to more than 30 pathogens, including flu, RSV and other respiratory viruses. The program currently operates Covid-19 surveillance at seven major international airports in the United States. The traveler surveillance program was introduced in 2021 when the CDC began collecting nasal swab samples from anonymous international travelers arriving at participating airports who volunteer to get swabbed. The program has collected samples from travelers from more than 135 countries and has sequenced more than 14,000 samples for further analysis. The wastewater program, which was introduced in August 2022, collects wastewater from a single plane using a custom-made collection device.

The Federal Aviation Administration indicated Friday that it is moving toward requiring that planes be equipped with technology designed to prevent close calls around airports. The FAA asked an internal advisory panel to make recommendations on how to require systems that would alert pilots if they are lined up to land on the wrong runway or a taxiway, or when the runway they have chosen is too short. The FAA said the move is part of its effort to eliminate “serious close calls.” The National Transportation Safety Board has started investigations into seven such incidents since January. Planes typically have GPS-based systems that warn pilots if they are in danger of hitting the ground or an obstacle. He said the FAA move “sounds like a very good idea.”Preliminary reports about close calls this year point to pilot error in some cases and air controller mistakes in others.

This is an as-told-to essay based on conversations with and Reddit posts written by Bill Zhou, a 26-year-old transportation engineer. Bay Area rent for a private bedroom and bathroom is super expensive, and I didn't feel justified in spending that much money. US President Joe Biden boards Air Force One at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, as he travels back to the White House, June 21, 2023. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is kicking off a more than $42 billion plan to give every American household access to high-speed internet by 2030. "Put simply, high-speed internet is a necessity in today's society," said Mitch Landrieu, White House infrastructure coordinator. "President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to leaving no community behind as we connect everyone in America to high-speed internet."

Two United Airlines employees have been charged for their alleged roles in a drug-selling scheme. They were accused of making at least $10,000 a week stealing weed from checked bags and selling it. The Justice Department charged two United Airlines baggage handlers, alleging they participated in a years-long scheme to sell marijuana stolen out of passengers' bags. Neither SFO nor United Airlines immediately responded to Insider's request for comment. In 2017, SFO employees told SF Weekly that they didn't confiscate "a personal use amount" of marijuana from passengers.

A former Apple software engineer was charged with allegedly stealing Apple's autonomous technology for a Chinese self-driving car company, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday. Weibao Wang worked as a software engineer at Apple from 2016 to 2018, a DOJ indictment said. Wang worked on Apple's Annotation Team, and was granted "broad access" to databases which the Justice Department said could only be accessed by 2,700 of Apple's 135,000 employees. An even smaller segment, around 2%, had access to "one or more" of the databases Wang accessed, the indictment continues. The charges were announced as part of a sweeping enforcement action led by the Disruptive Technology Strike Force.
