Texas sued a New York physician for prescribing a woman abortion pills, according to a lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Ken Paxton. In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Collin County, Paxton said that Margaret Daley Carpenter, a New York doctor, provided mifepristone and misprostol, a pair of abortion-inducing drugs, to a 20-year-old pregnant woman there, which led to a medical abortion. "Carpenter's conduct violates the Texas Health and Safety Code’s prohibition on prescribing abortion-inducing drugs via telemedicine," the lawsuit said. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Friday that it will hear a case related to California's ability to set its own, often strict, vehicle emissions standards that include curbs on greenhouse gases. Due to the size of the California market, the state’s regulations hold considerable sway over vehicle manufacturers. The Obama administration granted California a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions but the first Trump administration sought to change course. The most recent EPA waiver, in 2022, prompted 17 Republican states led by Ohio and the business groups to sue. In court papers, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar pointed out that manufacturers are already meeting the state's standards.

Smith & Wesson voluntarily agreed, among other product safety changes, to make magazine disconnects available as an option on all its pistols. “I can’t really go around talking about how there needs to be more gun safety for 25-year-old men who know better,” she said. But in a second interview months later, Skipper said that after talking with NBC News she had come around to the idea that more guns should have magazine disconnects. And law enforcement agencies that previously required magazine disconnects in standard-issue weapons have largely moved to guns without them. Magazine disconnects are “becoming much less common for sure.”Consumers may have moved on, but the deadly accidents have persisted.

WASHINGTON — Conservative justices objected as the Supreme Court on Monday sidestepped a new dispute over race in education by declining to consider whether an admissions program for public high schools in Boston unlawfully considered race. The court's refusal to hear the case marks the second time the court has declined to review a policy aimed at increasing diversity in public high schools since the high court ended the consideration of race in college admissions last year. The policy, implemented by the Boston School Committee in 2021, applied to three selective high schools in Boston: Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and John D. O’Bryant School. The Supreme Court in February turned away a similar challenge to an admissions policy at a Virginia high school that was also aimed at increasing diversity. In a statement, Gorsuch said that the fact the Boston schools' policy was no longer in effect was one reason not to hear the case.

Under the law, app stores could face major fines if they continue to host TikTok following the deadline, if it’s not sold. While the ruling increases the likelihood that TikTok will be banned, it’s not a done deal just yet. TikTok indicated that it plans to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court. However, Schiller said TikTok is still likely to face an uphill battle in the Supreme Court. “However, there has been much discussion about TikTok being banned since 2020 and nothing has happened yet, so I’m skeptical.

is somehow a gay anthem,” Willis, who wrote the lyrics for the 1978 hit, said on Facebook on Monday. “As I’ve said numerous times in the past, that is a false assumption based on the fact that my writing partner was gay, and some (not all) of Village People were gay, and that the first Village People album was totally about gay life. It is not.”The song, from the band’s third studio album, “Cruisin,’” has spent years as an informal anthem of the LGBTQ community. Willis said that when writing the song he had no idea that the YMCA was “a hang out for gays.”He said: “I therefore wrote Y.M.C.A. is somehow a gay anthem because such notion is based solely on the song’s lyrics alluding to elicit activity for which it does not.

“Y.M.C.A.” singer and co-writer Victor Willis of the band Village People defended President-elect Donald Trump’s use of the song Monday on Facebook. Willis denied that the disco tune was intended as a “gay anthem,” saying he “knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays” when he wrote the lyrics. Willis said he wrote “Y.M.C.A.” based on what he knew about the worldwide youth organization at the time, particularly the YMCA branches in the urban areas of San Francisco. Willis said he has received more than 1,000 complaints about the use of “Y.M.C.A” at Trump’s campaign rallies. Data suggests the staple campaign moment drove the song up the charts, with search interest and listenership soaring on Election Day.
