CNN —The Suzuka Circuit was a hive of activity on Thursday as the Formula One four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel got to work on his latest environmental project ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The campaign, named “Buzzin’ Corner,” also involved current F1 drivers customizing the hotels while the kerb at turn two was painted yellow and black. “I want, with this project, to create awareness about the importance and the subject of biodiversity,” Vettel told the F1 website. Vettel invited the paddock down to the corner to observe and decorate the hotel constructions, with the drivers and team principals happily obliging. Vettel gathered the drivers, team principals and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali together at "Buzzin' Corner."

'Smooth operator' Sainz ends Red Bull's winning streak

"We nailed the race," said Sainz after his second career win for the Italian team and first since Silverstone last year. The Spaniard eked out his hard tyres for 42 laps, winning at the slowest possible speed, for Ferrari's first victory since Charles Leclerc triumphed in Austria in July last year. No team has ever won every race in a season of more than 10 rounds but Red Bull had looked capable of doing so until Singapore struck. Mercedes trimmed Red Bull's lead in the constructors' standings to 308 points, keeping them waiting at least another weekend for the title. Verstappen, who started on the hard tyres, moved up to second with Perez fourth but they were soon overhauled and plunged down the field after stopping under normal conditions.

Espargaro denied Bagnaia his fifth grand prix win of the season by 0.215 of a second, with the top four separated by just 0.750. Espargaro was up to second by lap six, helped also by team mate Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller clashing and running wide ahead of him. "At that time, my plan was to pass him (Bagnaia) and try to go away," said Espargaro. "But when it started to rain I said 'OK, stay quiet behind Pecco, it's better that he open the track'. Honda's six-times MotoGP champion Marc Marquez fell five laps from the finish, continuing a grim run for the struggling Spaniard who has yet to complete a grand prix this season.

Alex Marquez beats Bezzecchi to Silverstone sprint victory
  + stars: | 2023-08-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Spaniard Alex Marquez beat late-charging Marco Bezzecchi to become the fifth different sprint winner in nine rounds of the MotoGP season with victory in the 10 lap race at Silverstone on Saturday. The Gresini Racing Ducati rider, who started on the front row in third place, beat VR46 Ducati's pole-sitter Bezzecchi by 0.366 seconds with Aprilia's Maverick Vinales third. The younger brother of six times MotoGP champion Marc, who finished 18th for the struggling Repsol Honda team, Marquez took the lead from KTM's Australian Jack Miller on the second lap on a drying track after heavy rain. Alex Marquez was one of several fallers in qualifying, with some riders questioning whether the sprint should go ahead on safety grounds before conditions improved. "I didn't expect such difficult conditions in the race," said Bezzecchi, who had a big crash in qualifying after securing pole and came back at Marquez in the closing stages.

July 20 (Reuters) - Daniel Ricciardo said he was refreshed and ready to go for a Formula One comeback with AlphaTauri at the Hungarian Grand Prix that he hopes will lead to a dream return to dominant champions Red Bull. The eight times grand prix winner has replaced Dutch driver Nyck de Vries at Red Bull's sister team for the rest of the season. "The dream is a Red Bull seat but there is no 'this is what you need to do'," said Ricciardo, who had been due to spend the 2023 season as Red Bull reserve while assessing his future after a tough two years at McLaren. Red Bull boss Christian Horner said this week that Ricciardo had returned with some 'bad habits' but was now back to the driver of old. "I think the time off was really, really beneficial for me and I'm in a place now where I'm just hungry and ready to go...so, pretty pumped."

SILVERSTONE, England, July 8 (Reuters) - Lando Norris is used to strange requests from a legion of fans at his home British Grand Prix - but signing a baby's forehead was a step too far. "I just get more and more people wanting me to decide their tattoos and stuff," he told reporters. "I used to call (former team mate) Carlos (Sainz) a muppet," he explained. Norris could be the top British driver on Sunday, with Mercedes' seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and George Russell outside the top 10 in Friday practice. The McLaren driver was already top Brit in Austria last weekend when he finished fourth behind a podium of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez (first and third) with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc second.

In 2008, Bernie Ecclestone, head of Formula 1 at the time, said the race would leave Silverstone. Then in 2017, the British Racing Drivers’ Club, the owner of the track, activated what is called the break clause in its hosting agreement, which would allow the club to stop holding the race. After two years of talks, a new deal was struck with Formula 1 and its new owner, Liberty Media, which had replaced Ecclestone. Based on its most recent financial filing, Silverstone made £6.9 million in profit in 2021. “The members, the 820 or so racing drivers or former racing drivers,” he said, don’t take money out.

SILVERSTONE, England, July 6 (Reuters) - Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton said he would support a peaceful protest at the British Grand Prix this weekend as Formula One drivers voiced fears of environmental activists invading the track. Asked at Silverstone whether he would support a protest that did not involve a track invasion, Hamilton, who has previously expressed sympathy with the cause, replied: "Yes. I support peaceful protests." We don't want to be put in harm's way and we don't want to put anyone else in harm's way. So if there was to be one (a protest) we hope that it's not on track."

Nikita Mazepin, 24, is trying to overturn the British sanctions so he can negotiate with Formula One teams to return to the sport in 2024. Mazepin is also challenging EU and Canadian sanctions as part of his attempt to return to Formula One. Scott said in court filings that Europe's second-highest court temporarily lifted some EU sanctions in March, allowing him to attend a specialist training facility in Italy. However, lawyers representing Britain's Foreign Office argued that Mazepin could still negotiate with Formula One teams with the sanctions in place. Another hearing is expected to take place in June to decide whether sanctions can be temporarily lifted pending Mazepin's full challenge, which will be heard in July.
