Russia has increasingly fired glide bombs at Ukrainian territory in its invasion of the country. AdvertisementBut Russia has not been using the bombs at the same scale against Ukrainian forces that crossed the border into Russia earlier this month. Russia used 750 glide bombs on Ukrainian cities and villages last week alone, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Sunday. It's also fewer than the 50 glide bombs Russia has reportedly been firing daily into Ukraine's Sumy region, which neighbors Kursk. But these were relatively isolated incidents rather than something that was happening as a result of a new strategy, such as using glide bombs in Kursk.

I've never hit the wall before, but I've met enough marathon runners to know its lore. McDowell shared a few things marathon runners can do before and during the race to hop over that wall. "When you're training for a marathon, you want to be training your eating and drinking as well as your running," McDowell said. Most marathon runners do this with supplements, which come in various forms, from gels to chews. She said most marathon runners — especially first-timers — walk at least part of the race.

After years of starts and stops at the box office, Disney appears to have hit a groove in 2024. Its latest Pixar film, “Inside Out 2,” is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, topping $1.5 billion at the global box office. And the box office hits aren’t expected to stop there. Disney has long been a box office champion, driving significant ticket sales domestically and globally. In the year before the pandemic, Disney had seven theatrical releases top $1 billion at the box office.

The new market theory was that investors would sell some of their high-flying technology winners and buy small cap laggards primed for a comeback when the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates. But on Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost more than 2% , and the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark lost even more. "If you look in small caps, they don't have their earnings follow through. A 'Trump trade' hedge using options

The reason this matters to investors is the so-called Trump trade. The stock market did very well following former President Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton in November 2016, but smaller businesses, in particular, were beneficiaries. When we listen to some of the policy ideas that Trump has discussed, such as measures intended to protect smaller U.S.-based businesses, companies in the small-cap Russell 2000 index stand to benefit. Since the June 27 debate, the Russell 2000 has outperformed the S & P 500 by more than 6 percentage points. So, investors must acknowledge that if Trump's path to victory against Harris or a potential unknown pinch-hitter is less certain, then uncertainty must, by extension, apply to the Trump trade.

After a difficult two years for small cap stocks, the sector finally appears on path for a comeback, according to Citi Research head of U.S. equity strategy Scott Chronert. The small cap benchmark Russell 2000 index is up 4.3% week to date alone amid a 9.4% rally in July. As investors become more enthusiastic on the prospect of forthcoming interest rate cuts, they've started to sell off mega cap technology names — which have led the market rally — in favor of the rate-sensitive small cap sector. Banks currently have an "easier" valuation starting point, according to Chronert. The sector overall contains little exposure to tariffs — which has become a major campaign platform of former president Donald Trump.

Stanley Druckenmiller , still basking in his winning Nvidia bet, has hit another home run in this bull market. When Druckenmiller acquired the position in the first quarter, small caps were significantly underperforming their large-cap counterparts. Druckenmiller once managed George Soros' Quantum Fund and shot to fame after helping make a $10 billion bet against the British pound in 1992. After the stock soared from $150 to above $900, Druckenmiller slashed the stake. A lot of what we recognized has become recognized by the marketplace now," Druckenmiller said on CNBC at the time.

The small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 jumped 2% on Tuesday, heading for its fifth straight winning day. Small-cap companies are especially sensitive to rate policy, as their financing costs rise when interest rates are high. With the S & P 500 surging more than 18% in 2024, it might be time for investors to make a few defensive moves in their portfolios. But that surge is spurring some financial advisors to reassess their clients' exposure to large-cap tech and turn toward currently unloved asset categories that could be poised to rise. "It might take a little longer to manifest but we think [health care] is an interesting combination of offense and defense, and it provides meaningful cash flows for investors," Saccocia said. London CNN —British voters have handed the Labour Party its first election victory in almost two decades, hoping that a new center-left government will revive Britain’s ailing economy and fix collapsing public services. The win is a triumph for Keir Starmer, a former chief prosecutor who only entered parliament in 2015 and will become prime minister later Friday. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”But Labour’s jubilation may soon give way to trepidation given the economic challenges ahead. Making these problems even harder to solve: stubbornly low economic growth. To some extent, the government is likely hoping economic growth will be stronger than forecast and help with both goals.

The right catalyst For investors, the bull case for small caps that prevailed when the year began, still holds. More immediately, second-quarter earnings may prove a positive catalyst for small caps since expectations are so low, according to Jefferies' DeSanctis. On a trailing 12-month basis, the S & P 500 is trading at a multiple of 25 times earnings. In a year when the S & P 500 is touting a 15.5% advance, small-cap stocks look underwhelming – but investors shouldn't shy away from them, said Julie Biel, chief market strategist at Kayne Anderson Rudnick. "I don't think you want to avoid them — they're part of a balanced diet," said Biel, who is also a portfolio manager at the firm. The benchmark small-cap index Russell 2000 is up roughly 1% year to date, whereas the S & P 500 has rallied almost 16%, largely thanks to the strength of Nvidia and other megacap tech stocks. The S & P 400 mid-cap index has also fallen short of its large-cap counterpart, up a modest 5% in 2024. Biel herself manages a small- and mid-cap growth portfolio and takes a long-term investment approach.

That's true so far, with the S & P 500 jumping 4.8% in May after finishing April down 4.2%. As equities struggled, (the S & P 500 fell almost 20% in 2022), Lee felt like the risk of inflation was being mispriced.
