CNN —A lightning-sparked wildfire raging in eastern Oregon has scorched nearly 270,000 acres, making it the largest active wildfire in the United States. The massive blaze is the largest of 31 large wildfires currently burning across Oregon, which has been the hardest hit by fires in recent days. Over the weekend and earlier this week, the Durkee Fire exhibited extreme fire behavior, even creating it’s own weather in the form of pyrocumulus clouds. Wildfire smoke, including from the Durkee Fire in Oregon, was spreading into Boise and beyond. A cold front has moved through the area Thursday morning, bringing high temperatures to the 80s on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

CNN —Two fast-growing fires are tearing across a southern New Mexico tribal reservation and converging on a village “like a pair of tongs,” prompting thousands of residents to evacuate, officials say. An estimated 5,000 residents were ordered to evacuate the village area due to the approaching South Fork Fire, New Mexico Forestry spokesperson George Ducker told CNN. A second blaze, the Salt Fire, is also burning on tribal land south of Ruidoso and has scorched 2,000 acres. The South Fork Fire has burned more than 5,000 acres and is zero percent contained, according to an overnight update from the New Mexico Forestry Division. Some areas could endure the longest heat wave they’ve seen in decades, the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said. Tens of millions of people who aren’t used to heat this intense will be sweating in temperatures well into the 90s this week. Through the rest of the week, the most extreme heat risk is in place from the Great Lakes into the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service. Humidity will also join forces with extreme heat to create triple-digit heat indices – measurements of how hot the human body feels – in some areas. Chicago residents could feel heat indices between 95 and 105 degrees through next week, the NWS in Chicago warned.

Areas of the country that produce a lot of rice and wheat have been badly affected, disrupting spring and summer planting seasons. CNN —A 2-year-old child died after a strong gust of wind sent the bounce house he was in airborne and into a neighboring lot in central Arizona, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said. The toddler, Bodhi Naaf, is the son of Phoenix firefighter Karl Naaf, according to the United Phoenix Firefighters Local 493 union. “This appears to have been a tragic accident,” Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lauren Reimer said in a statement. CNN —Part of a roadway on California’s Big Sur coast crumbled into the ocean over the weekend after part of a cliff gave way in what officials are calling a “slip out.”A portion of Highway 1 remained closed, according to a Sunday evening post from Caltrans District 5. All Big Sur state parks in the affected area are closed “until further notice,” according to a notice posted by California Department of Parks and Recreation. Essential travelers in the area will be led by convoy through the closed area, according to Caltrans District 5. The convoy will be in place for the “next several days” as crews work to fix and stabilize the roadway, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. New York CNN —The US Energy Department has issued an emergency order aimed at keeping the lights on in Texas as the state’s power grid grapples with surging demand amid record-high temperatures. The order, issued Thursday night, could allow Texas power plants to surpass pollution limits through Friday night to meet “abnormally high” demand for electricity. Jennifer Granholm, US secretary of energy, determined in the order that “an emergency exists in Texas due to a shortage of electric energy, a shortage of facilities for the generation of electric energy and other causes.”As the heat wave continues to shatter records across the country, including in Texas, energy demand for things like air conditioning have frequently taxed the state’s delicate power grid with wind and solar energy helping to prop it up. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which oversees the electric grid serving 90% of the state’s customers, filed a request for the emergency order Wednesday. ERCOT warned that power outages could become necessary if demand isn’t lowered or additional supply can’t be added.

Idalia is expected to intensify into a hurricane Monday and make landfall on Wednesday morning near the Big Bend of Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.
