AdvertisementMindy Wight, CEO of the Squamish development group building Sen̓áḵw, called it "the creation of a modern Squamish village" in an interview with Business Insider. Canada's federal auditor general recently condemned a "distressing and persistent pattern of failure" by federal programs designed to support First Nations housing and infrastructure, among other services. The housing projects aren't the only major developments underway on indigenous land in Canada. There are no housing or infrastructure developments on US tribal land that match the scale of the First Nations projects in Canada. While some Native American tribes have spearheaded significant housing projects, most indigenous-owned land in the US isn't in the most valuable housing markets.

A record win for Arsenal. After Arsenal hammered West Ham 6-0 for its biggest ever Premier League away victory, United beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a huge result in the race for Champions League qualification. Bukayo Saka scored twice and Declan Rice — a former West Ham favorite — added the sixth goal almost apologetically. Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United and has now netted in five straight league matches. Signed in July for 105 million pounds (then $138 million), it is looking like money well spent by Arsenal.

Activist investor Barington Capital is pushing Mattel to consider selling off its American Girl and Fisher-Price brands, citing underperformance within the divisions. Mattel shares were up around 3% in premarket trading Friday following a letter sent to Mattel Thursday, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. American Girl and Fisher-Price, two iconic brands, are among the most popular in their respective markets. Mitarotonda said that if Mattel cannot stymie continued erosion in both Fisher-Price and American Girl, which has suffered similar declines, the company "may not be the right owner of these brands." "We believe that these brands are now detracting from the success at Mattel's other segments and hurting shareholder value," Mitarotonda said in a release.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Taylor Swift is on hand for boyfriend Travis Kelce's latest NFL playoff game. It did not take long for him to give her a reason to celebrate. It came in the end zone at the same end of the stadium as Swift, who was watching the game with his mother, Donna Kelce, and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. CBS panned to Swift while advertising its upcoming Grammys broadcast and showed her again after Kelce made a big catch in the second quarter. Jason Kelce stole the show in Buffalo, celebrating shirtless and bringing a young girl to get a photo with Swift.

Several large investment firms are writing off a recession in the US in 2024 as growth holds up and inflation steadily declines, but T. Rowe Price thinks that optimism may be misplaced. While T. Rowe Price doesn't have an official call on the economy, the brightest minds at the $1.4 trillion Baltimore-based firm urged investors to be cautious at a mid-November conference. However, T. Rowe Price is skeptical that the Fed will end its fight against inflation anytime soon. T. Rowe Price found that through October, those names rose 53.2% compared to a 1.2% year-to-date return for the other 493 companies in the S&P 500. Dom Rizzo, a portfolio manager of global technology equity strategy at T. Rowe Price, agreed that the Magnificent 7's momentum won't stop just because the group is pricey.

The US is borrowing too much money and that's what is keeping rates up, the ex-Dallas Fed Chair says. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe higher for longer outlook for interest rates sparked a historic crash in Treasury bonds this month, but there's another factor that's set to keep yields higher going forward, and that's US fiscal policy. According to former Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher, massive government borrowing needed to fund massive spending will be a culprit of higher bond yields. "I believe what's driving rates higher and what will keep them higher for longer is our fiscal policy," Fisher told CNBC on Tuesday. Compounding the issue of soaring debt is rising interest rates, as borrowing costs rocket higher amid the Federal Reserve's fight against inflation.

Parents thinking of saving for their children's college education in around a decade could be in for some sticker shock. Breaking down the costs U.S. college tuition inflation averaged 12% annually from 2010 to 2022, according to T. Rowe Price, citing research by Education Data Initiative . Even assuming a more modest 5% annual inflation rate, the estimated total college cost could be as high as $383,823, she said. That college tuition bill 10 years from now — taking the $165,000 as a baseline and assuming a 3% normalized inflation rate and tuition inflation of 6% — could hit $295,000, according to Ebright. "It is important to maintain some exposure to growth assets as tuition inflation has traditionally been higher than the broader economy," Shen said.

Nearly 12 months later, coach Kyle Shanahan can't even imagine what life would be like without McCaffrey driving the Niners offense. The midseason addition of McCaffrey last year immediately transformed the 49ers from a middling offense into one of the most productive. McCaffrey currently is in the top 10 for odds to win the award, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Cain's Sept. 22 order had been celebrated by the oil and gas industry, which had sued in August alongside the state of Louisiana over an earlier decision by the Interior Department to scale back the auction. Representatives for the Interior Department, environmental groups, the Louisiana attorney general's office and the American Petroleum Institute did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Interior Department finalized plans for a reduced lease sale in August, after last year's Inflation Reduction Act mandated the auction move forward. The sale made about 67 million acres in the Gulf available for bids. Those groups had claimed the whales can be harmed or killed by oil spills, vessel strikes, noise, marine debris and other impacts of oil and gas exploration and development.

U.S. judge orders expansion of Gulf of Mexico oil lease auction

WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Louisiana has ordered an expansion of next week's sale of oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico, saying the Biden administration must include additional acreage, according to a court ruling issued late on Thursday. U.S. District Judge James Cain said the Interior Department must proceed with the lease sale by Sept. 30, the ruling said. Environment groups had opposed including the additional acres, citing the need for adequate safeguards for the endangered Rice's whale. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management had no comment on the ruling, which was reported earlier by Bloomberg News. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Christian McCaffrey scored a touchdown in his 12th straight game, Brock Purdy threw two TD passes and the San Francisco 49ers won their 13th straight regular season game, 30-12 over the New York Giants on Thursday night. The defense did the rest against the short-handed Giants (1-2), who fell behind by double digits at the half for the third time in three games this season. That matched Jerry Rice's franchise record with 12 straight games in the regular season or playoffs with a TD and is three shy of the NFL mark. They rallied to beat the Cardinals with a strong second half. Davidson (elbow) left in the second half.
