That’s made home insurance increasingly unaffordable or even inaccessible – and that’s leaving more people in the same position as the Daneaus. California’s largest insurer, State Farm, requested a 30% rate increase for its homeowner’s line last month. Last year, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara reached an agreement with insurers with an aim to cover approximately 85% of properties in high-risk areas. “[My insurance plan] wasn’t canceled but my insurance company increased the rates quite a bit,” she said. But he cautioned there’s no guarantee of that, leaving homeowners like the Daneaus grappling with uncertainty.

Instead, Etro decided, every room was to be kept in its place, fitting for a country manor in a traditional village that’s been maintained, for now, he says, “mostly in the state that it was.” Given how rich people lived four centuries ago, with distinct spaces for entertaining and relaxing, as well as separate ones where servants could clandestinely move about and manage everything, each floor of the home is its own maze of meandering living rooms, hallways, staircases and antechambers; there are three kitchens — a winter one, a summer one and an outdoor one — several sitting areas, three guest bedrooms, a formal dining room and dedicated wings for the couple and their daughter to watch television and sleep. Only once did the architect with whom Etro worked, a local woman named Lucia Cataldi who “knows the best artisans in the area,” tear down a wall to create better access to the ground-floor winter kitchen but, even then, she had two doors installed that exactly match the house’s many carved wooden ones. They updated the electricity, lighting and plumbing, but most of their work focused on fixing what previous residents had ruined: The best surprise came when they peeled back decades of paint and plaster on the vaulted and coffered ceilings, revealing elaborately decorated borders in lavender, periwinkle and blush pink.

This was a day to forget for the United States men’s soccer team. As seen from the graphic below, Morocco dominated the game in key statistical metrics, ending the United States’ hopes of a medal. Thus concludes the United States men’s two-tournament summer. Tanner Tessmann was at the heart of most of the United States’ positive passages. San Juan (AP) — Puerto Rico’s governor signed a law on Wednesday that prohibits discrimination against people wearing Afros, curls, locs, twists, braids and other hairstyles in the racially diverse U.S. territory. The move was celebrated by those who had long demanded explicit protection related to work, housing, education and public services. “It’s a victory for generations to come,” Welmo Romero Joseph, a community facilitator with the nonprofit Taller Salud, said in an interview. A bronze statue of San Juan Bautista stands in front the Capitol building flanked by U.S. and Puerto Rican flags, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where a ruling was made on Wednesday to ban hair discrimination. “Unfortunately, people identified as Black or Afro descendant in Puerto Rico still face derogatory treatment, deprivation of opportunities, marginalization, exclusion and all kinds of discrimination,” the law signed Wednesday states.

CNN —Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday claimed responsibility for a deadly drone blast in Tel Aviv, the Iranian proxy group’s latest attack in what it says is a response to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The drone that caused the explosion was detected by an Israeli aerial defense system, but not intercepted due to “human error,” an Israeli military official said. The Israeli military is investigating the attack and does not believe further threats are imminent, the official said. An investigator inspects a damaged window of a building at the site of an explosion in Tel Aviv on July 19, 2024. The drone attack in Tel Aviv Friday comes after the Houthis claimed earlier this month that they had targeted ships in the Israeli port of Haifa with a number of drones in joint military operations with Iran-backed militias based in Iraq.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the rare attack on Tel Aviv early Friday morning local time, which marked their first lethal attack in Israel. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesperson, said an initial assessment suggests the system used in the attack was an Iranian-made Samad-3 one-way attack drone with an extended range. CNN —An explosion near the US Embassy branch office in Tel Aviv that killed at least one person early Friday is being investigated as a possible drone attack, according to Israeli authorities. The blast occurred about 100 meters (330 feet) from the compound of the US Embassy branch office, according to a CNN analysis of open-source satellite imagery of the scene. New York CNN —State Farm is seeking increases of as much as 52% for some of its residential insurance rates in California, which could ramp up the financial burden for many homeowners and renters in the state’s troubled insurance market. It’s the third major change for State Farm in California within the last year. “State Farm General’s latest rate filings raise serious questions about its financial condition,” California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said in a statement. A few months following State Farm’s decision to stop offering new home insurance, Farmers Insurance also started limiting new homeowners insurance policies in California, citing high costs and wildfire risks. Farmers is the second-largest provider of homeowners insurance in the state, after State Farm.

AdvertisementThis was Belgium at their finest, and Romania raised the level of their game in the second half to try to equalise. If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. More off-ball runs in the second half led to the third, and by then the match was done and dusted.

CNN —Reigning champion Italy was knocked out of Euro 2024 in the last 16 after Switzerland produced a stunning upset to win 2-0 on Saturday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Swiss supporters didn’t have to wait long after the break for a second goal – only 27 seconds to be exact. Italy’s continued sloppiness on the ball carried over into the second half, immediately giving the ball away from it’s own kickoff. While Switzerland deservedly advanced, it was an uncharacteristically out-of-sorts performance for Italy, who’s defense of its title ends in the first knockout game of the tournament. Italy’s defeat means that the reigning champion has been eliminated in the round of 16 at the last three Euros.

Ricardo M. Urbina, a trailblazing Latino lawyer who scored victories for civil liberties as an empathetic federal judge and for civil rights as a record-breaking track star — helping to fuel an epochal protest at the 1968 Olympics — died on Monday in Washington. His death, in an assisted living facility, was caused by complications of Parkinson’s disease, his son, Ian Urbina, said. Judge Urbina, the first Latino appointed to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the United States District Court in Washington, figured most prominently in cases that originated with the federal government’s war against terrorism and that put him at odds with the administration of President George W. Bush. In 2007, he extended habeas corpus rights to Shawqi Ahmad Omar, a citizen of Jordan and the United States who was about to be transferred to Iraqi custody to be tried as a terrorist.

Oil prices were little changed on Wednesday, staying close to their highest levels in seven weeks as the market weighed concerns over escalating conflicts against demand worries following an unexpected rise in U.S. crude inventories. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 20 cents to $81.37 per barrel. U.S. crude stocks rose by 2.264 million barrels in the week ended June 14, market sources said on Tuesday, citing American Petroleum Institute figures. However, gasoline inventories fell by 1.077 million barrels, while distillates rose by 538,000 barrels, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. China data this week showed May industrial output lagged expectations, but retail sales, a gauge of consumption, marked their quickest growth since February.

A US-based lawyer who has represented accused Chinese money launderers said the tempo of law enforcement operations against the alleged launderers has increased in recent weeks as federal agents close in on “bigger fish” among Chinese money launderers in the US. None of the federal law enforcement agencies involved in tracking Chinese money launderers agreed to be interviewed on the record. Grassley and Whitehouse have each introduced legislation they say is key to closing loopholes in US law that are actively exploited by the cartels’ money launderers. Elaborate networksRecent court documents illuminate how far-flung and elaborate US-based networks of alleged Chinese money launderers are. Mirror TransactionsExperts say the Chinese money launderers have mastered the art of so-called mirror transactions, which involve a series of deposits at multiple bank accounts to conceal the drug money.
