Core prices are forecast to have risen by a more acceptable 0.2% for a third straight month. That would take the annual rate down to 4.3%, the smallest year-on-year rise since September 2021. What makes these figures so interesting is the central bank is already in its quiet period before the Sept. 20 rate announcement, with traders overwhelmingly expecting the Fed to keep rates on hold. That updated projection is well above the central bank's 2% inflation target and above the 2.7% predicted by a Reuters poll of economists. The Federal Reserve’s survey of economic activity released Wednesday showed an economy that was expanding at a modest pace in the summer but facing the challenge of a tapped-out consumer and a slowing labor market. There is less unanimity about what the Fed will do after that, at its November meeting. Services inflation is still sticky, the economy may be growing faster than the Fed would like and the Chinese economy is in a slowdown. “Fed Governor Christopher Waller told CNBC yesterday that recent labor market data, including a decline in job openings, moderating wage increases, and slower job growth in August are encouraging,” said Jose Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers. Having said that, he left the door open for another rate hike because he doesn’t think one more would weaken economic growth significantly given risks remain tilted towards not doing enough.”

Crop Watch corn and soybean fields were stressed last week under mostly dry conditions, but multiple rounds of rain over the weekend prevented yield expectations from declining. Last week’s Crop Watch rain totals were mostly concentrated over the weekend, though not all areas received the needed soaking. More than 3 inches of rain were observed in South Dakota, Nebraska, western Iowa and western Illinois, and Indiana picked up 2 inches. For example, the western Iowa producer this week described his beans as phenomenal while the Ohio field was said to look incredible. The North Dakota corn is in Griggs County and the soybeans are in Stutsman County.

New York CNN —The Dow is on pace for its best run in 126 years. If the Dow closes higher Thursday for a 14th consecutive session, that would be its longest run of consecutive gains since May 1897. Should the Dow end the day higher today, and for a 15th straight day on Friday, that would mark the index’s longest daily winning streak ever. The blue-chip index’s run is already at historic levels: The Dow on Wednesday notched its 13th straight day of gains, its best winning streak since 1987 and its highest level since February 2022. Some investors say that the central bank is unlikely to pivot as soon as Wall Street expects, or as quickly.

Investors are turning their attention to inflation data in the week ahead, following this week's hot jobs data, to further clarify the path of future monetary policy. Market participants are hoping next week's release of the June consumer price index on Wednesday, as well as last month's producer price index on Thursday, will show a downward trajectory in inflation after this week's strong ADP data spurred investor fears of further rate hikes ahead. Broadly speaking, investors are pricing in another quarter point rate hike at the July meeting. Of note, stocks tumbled Thursday after hotter-than-expected ADP data suggested the Federal Reserve has further to go in its tightening campaign. FactSet data shows analysts expect S & P 500 earnings fell 7% in the second quarter against the same quarter a year ago.

June 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stock indexes rebounded on Tuesday from a recent losing streak as upbeat economic data soothed investor worries about an imminent recession triggered by the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes. While the economic data was encouraging, Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Spouting Rock Asset Management, said the market also rose on seasonal factors. In Wales, Roaming a Land of Legends
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( Matthew Yeomans | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Nine hundred years ago, the Lord Rhys, ruler of the ancient Deheubarth kingdom, established a great seat of religious learning in the heart of mid-Wales. The abbey was called Ystrad Fflur (Strata Florida in the Latin spoken by the Cistercian monks who ran it). It means Vale of the Flowers in English. Today, much of Ystrad Fflur is just a memory save for a grand stone Romanesque arch nearly 25 feet tall, the foundation outline of the abbey and the graves of 11 Welsh princes laid to rest next to one another. It was here, sometime around 1350, that the monks received a commission from a wealthy local man to create a written record of the Welsh legends and folklore that had been passed down by poets, going back perhaps as far as the sixth century.

‘Happy Valley’ Review: The End of the Hero’s Journey

She’s a contemporary knight errant, upholding a code of decency against the terrors of modern life. “Happy Valley,” whose final season premieres on Monday (streaming on Acorn TV and AMC+, broadcast on BBC America), is a pocket-size, prosaic saga — a hero’s tale contained in three six-episode seasons and embedded in a family drama. Like all mythical heroes, Cawood has an antagonist, the psychopathic rapist and killer Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), who is the father of her grandson. In its structure, “Happy Valley” is very much a traditional British crime series, with seemingly unconnected plot strands and investigations that wind themselves together against a backdrop of cop-shop politics. In the new season’s major subplot, a less-than-sympathetic female character is caught between two seemingly more capable men whose weaknesses run deeper than hers.

THE GUEST, by Emma ClineAll is not as it seems in Emma Cline’s latest novel, “The Guest,” a deceptively simple story about a young woman kicked out of her rich lover’s Long Island beach house in the final days of summer after embarrassing him at a party. Convinced that her breakup is only temporary, Alex plans to saunter back into Simon’s life at a Labor Day party he is hosting at the end of the week. All she has to do is wait out five days until then. Don’t leave toothpaste in the sink basin.” Be appealing, but also be invisible. Alex knows she is replaceable, “a sort of inert piece of social furniture — only her presence was required, the general size and shape of a young woman.”
The dollar remained relatively weaker against most of its major peers, even as the dollar index rose 0.059% and the euro fell 0.15% to $1.1002. Friday's robust U.S. payrolls report prompted investors to dial back their expectations for the timing and size of the Fed's first interest rate cut. The two-year Treasury yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations, rose a touch above 4.0%. The dollar rose 0.18% against the yen. Bullion regained ground after a sharp retreat in the previous session, ahead of the inflation data that could shed light on the outlook for U.S. interest rates.

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.
HONG KONG, March 21 (Reuters) - The screening of "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey", a British slasher film due to be released in Hong Kong this week, has been cancelled after cinemas in the city declined to show it, its distributor said on Tuesday. Two films were dropped from Hong Kong's international film festival last year after failing to get approval from authorities. The cancellation comes as Hong Kong hosts the Art Basel contemporary art fair, with authorities eager to promote the city as a vibrant cultural hub.
