“We’ve been dealing with severe challenges due to gang violence, which has essentially cut off ground transportation,” Thelemaque said. “Although the FAA says the ban will lift on Dec. 12, most airlines are rescheduling flights for February,” she said. “Families are consumed by the news of worsening violence and are mourning senseless killings.”The flight ban is also disrupting long-standing holiday traditions in this mostly Catholic and Christian country. “Now, that opportunity has been taken away.”Williams noted that the ban extends beyond Port-au-Prince to airports throughout the country, further isolating Haitians. “Some passengers have had to return to Europe or elsewhere.”Police officers coduct searches in a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday.

This resolution abandoned that necessity, and for that reason, the United States could not support it. Fourteen Security Council members voted for the resolution, while only the United States voted against it. “It is a sad day for the Security Council, for the United Nations and for the international community,” said Algeria’s ambassador, Amar Bendjama. Although Security Council resolutions are considered to be international law, the Council has no means of enforcing resolutions. 6 Airports in Northern Haiti Are Reopened to U.S. Flights
  + stars: | 2024-11-21 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it was allowing U.S. flights to resume to six airports in northern Haiti. had barred U.S. airlines from operating in Haiti for 30 days after three commercial jetliners were struck by gunfire, including a Spirit Airlines flight as it was trying to land at the country’s main airport in Port-au-Prince, the capital. That flight diverted instead to an airport in the Dominican Republic. The stoppage of flights had stranded passengers all over the world and also affected the flow of aid into Haiti, as even humanitarian flights were grounded. The agency said its bar on flights to Port-au-Prince would remain in place until Dec. 12, but it was allowing American carriers and general aviation pilots to fly to six airports in Haiti: Port-de-Paix, Cap-Haïtien, Pignon, Jeremie, Antoine-Simon and Jacmel.

The best and worst developments in public health have always come from moments of crisis. But many of the elixir victims were very young children, and agency officials wasted no time spinning the incident up into a national crisis. The public grew skeptical of the effort when the vaccines were linked to an extremely rare but serious side effect. “It was supposed to be this great triumph,” says Joshua Sharfstein, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and author of “The Public Health Crisis Survival Guide.” “But it ended up seeding a generation of vaccine hesitancy instead.” The takeaway from these and similar parables is clear, Dr. Sharfstein says: Crisis can be a powerful catalyst for shaping policy and improving society. The United States is in what can only be described as an epoch of crisis.

CNN —President Vladimir Putin has updated Russia’s nuclear doctrine, two days after his US counterpart Joe Biden granted Ukraine permission to strike targets deep inside Russia with US-made weapons. Under the updated doctrine issued Tuesday, Moscow will consider aggression from any non-nuclear state – but with the participation of a nuclear country – a joint attack on Moscow. The Kremlin began this fresh round of nuclear saber-rattling Tuesday, saying the revised military doctrine would in theory lower the bar to first use of nuclear weapons. “An important element of this document is that nuclear deterrence is aimed at ensuring that a potential adversary understands the inevitability of retaliation in the event of aggression against the Russian Federation or its allies,” Peskov said. The change comes as the Kremlin responds to the Biden administration’s decision to allow Ukraine to use powerful long-range American weapons inside Russia, a move the Russian government has already signaled would be a dangerous escalation of the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian news outlets reported early Tuesday that the missiles had been used to attack a Russian military facility in the Bryansk border region. The Kremlin has repeatedly warned the West against allowing Ukraine to use its long-range weapons to attack Russia directly. CNN —China rejected a meeting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a conference in southeast Asia this week, marking the latest turn in a tumultuous relationship between the two countries’ defense leaders. But China did not accept the offer, pointing to a recent Taiwan arms sale as their rationale, a senior defense official told reporters traveling with Austin in Laos. The Chinese rejection of the meeting in Laos comes just days after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Peru for their final meeting under Biden’s administration. China has often used the cancellation of meetings and lines of communication as a way of registering displeasure with the United States. After then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, China cut off a number of lines of communication with the US, including on military issues and climate.

A voter casts his ballot at a voting station in the fishing village of Ndayane on Nov. 17, 2024, during Senegal's parliamentary elections. Senegal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in legislative elections that the president hopes will give his party a clear majority and the means to implement an ambitious agenda for reforms. The West African nation saw some of the worst political violence in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March. The new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised to help, but his government is grappling with slower-than-projected growth and a worsening budget deficit. The main threat to his party Pastef's ambitions is the unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the Republic party (APR) headed by the former Prime Minister Macky Sall.

The U.S. on Saturday reported its first case of a more aggressive strain of mpox: an individual in California who had recently traveled from Eastern Africa. It is classified into two distinct groups: the more aggressive strain, clade I, and a somewhat milder strain, clade II. In the current outbreak, clade I has been spreading largely through contact with infected animals and transmission within households, according to disease experts. But a version of the strain, clade Ib, has also spread through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men in Congo. That’s compared to a 0.2% global fatality rate for the 2022 outbreak.

Russia pumping gas via Ukraine but volumes to Austria cut

Last week, Gazprom accused Ukraine of withholding gas supplies destined for Moldova and threatened to reduce those flows, although Ukraine denied the accusation. Russian gas giant Gazprom continued to pump steady volumes of gas to Europe via Ukraine on Saturday, but supplies to Austrian energy company OMV were halted hours after Vienna said Russia had given notice it would cut off flows. Gazprom said it would send 42.4 million cubic metres of gas to Europe via Ukraine on Saturday, the same volume as on Friday. Flows into Slovakia from Ukraine were stable but nominations for flows to Austria from Slovakia were around 16% below averages seen this month, data from transmission system operator Eustream showed. OMV usually accounts for around 40% of Russian gas flows via Ukraine, or some 17 mcm per day.
