The home improvement retailer said it now expects full-year comparable sales to decline by 3% to 4% compared to the prior fiscal year. It had previously expected comparable sales, a metric that takes out the impact of store openings and closures and other one-time factors, to decline about 1%. Total sales are expected to increase between 2.5% and 3.5% including a 53rd week in the fiscal year and approximately $6.4 billion in sales from SRS. In an interview with CNBC, Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail said Home Depot has contended with consumers who have a "deferral mindset" since the middle of 2023. It marked the seventh consecutive quarter of negative comparable sales at Home Depot.

That waiting game has only intensified with a potential interest rate cut in sight. "What our customers tell their pros is, 'Everything I read tells me interest rates will be lower in three to six months,'" McPhail said. An interest rate cut could help move the needle for Home Depot as sales slow. The Federal Reserve has dropped hints that an interest rate cut could come soon. Even with an interest rate cut, Decker said, "people still might pause a little bit until some of this gets sorted out."

Shoppers walk through the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a shopping mall in Arlington, Virginia, February 2, 2024. As of early May, the company had 503 Macy's stores, including a small number of other concepts outside of malls. There were 352 shopping malls classified as Class A and B at the end of 2016, according to company reports, S&P Capital IQ and Coresight Research. That decline is sharper among Class C and D shopping malls, which fell from 684 malls in 2016 to 287 in 2022, according to the companies' research. Expensive Big Mac meals and fears of surge pricing at grocery stores have put food chains and consumer product companies in politicians' crosshairs. Walmart , McDonald's and Kroger are just a few of the companies that have found themselves in the debate over high inflation in the 2024 election. Democrats — particularly those like Casey who are trying to win races in competitive swing states — are trying to capitalize on frustration against companies over inflation. (The source of the data is unclear, and McDonald's has denied that its average prices have risen that much.) The criticism could also add to the pressure companies face to show they can lower prices or offer value.

The Macy's company logo is seen at the Macy's store on Herald Square on January 19, 2024 in New York City. Macy's department-store chain announced that they will be laying off roughly 2,350 employees which is about 3.5% of their workforce. Arkhouse and Brigade had for months been attempting to buy out the storied retailer. Arkhouse, after its initial efforts had been rebuffed, said earlier this year it intended to mount a proxy fight for control of Macy's. But the legacy department store operator's efforts to grow sales have been stymied by high inflation, as consumers become more selective about spending on discretionary items.

Walmart said Wednesday that it will open five automated distribution centers for fresh food across the country, as the retailer chases efficiency and its online grocery business grows. The discounter's new facilities are roughly 700,000 square feet on average. The retailer has been automating supply chain facilities across the country, including distribution centers that handle shelf-stable items and fulfillment centers that help pack and ship online orders. Walmart has said that by early 2026, about two-thirds of its stores will be serviced by some kind of automation and roughly 55% of fulfillment center volume will move through automated facilities.

Starting Monday, the Minneapolis-based discounter said companies that work with Shopify can apply to join Target Plus, its third-party marketplace. Target's marketplace creates a "halo" and is "an accelerant to the total business," she said. Target Plus has only a tiny fraction of the revenue and sellers of other third-party marketplaces. Sylvester would not say how much of that came from ads bought by Target Plus sellers. Milwaukee based department store giant Kohl's says it will not sponsor any events related to the Republican National Convention in that city this summer, where Donald Trump will be crowned the party's nominee for president. Northwestern Mutual is on the host committee and its CEO John Schlifske is reportedly helping to raise money for the group. The absence of Kohl's from the list of Republican convention sponsors notable, given that convention organizers have publicly touted the importance of Wisconsin-based companies helping to fund and organize the event.
