The Miami Heat honored Dwyane Wade by unveiling a statue of the basketball legend outside the Kaseya Center in Miami, sealing his legacy with the team and making him the first Heat player with a statue outside the arena. In comments after the unveiling, Wade said he never expected this moment. “The Miami Heat should’ve had a contest where they showed this picture to 1,000 fans — and anyone who guesses it’s Dwyane Wade gets to keep the statue,” Jeff Darlington, a reporter for ESPN, joked on X. Wade is one of two players to have been on all three Miami Heat teams that won NBA championships, according to the NBA. At Sunday's unveiling, Wade was grateful, thanking fans for following his career and adding after the statue reveal, "I believe I gave you guys something set in stone to hold on to."

No E. coli was detected in samples of beef patties used in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that have been linked to a deadly outbreak, a company spokesperson said Sunday, citing tests by the Colorado Agriculture Department. The department has no further plans to test the beef patties, the company spokesperson said, and the patties have been ruled out as the source of the outbreak. The most likely source of contamination was slivered onions from a single source, the company spokesperson said, citing the Food and Drug Administration. McDonald’s stopped sourcing slivered onions from that source — Taylor Farms Colorado Springs — indefinitely on Sunday, the company spokesperson said, days after it removed the Taylor Farms onions from its supply chain. The McDonald's spokesperson said the company is confident asking beef suppliers to provide a fresh supply of patties for distribution.

In a complaint Sept. 18, the U.S. claimed civil damages totaling $103,078,056 under the Rivers and Harbors Act, the Oil Pollution Act and general maritime law, according to the release. There are still dozens of outstanding civil claims, including one from the state of Maryland, seeking damages from the owners of the Dali. According to the Justice Department, Thursday's settlement does not include damages to rebuild the bridge because Maryland built, owned, maintained and operated it. The Dali smashed into the Key Bridge early March 26 after it left the Port of Baltimore en route to Sri Lanka. A black bear was hit by a car and killed on a Tennessee highway after it found a delicious snack on the side of the road while it was bulking up for winter, officials with the Appalachian Bear Rescue said on Facebook. The rescue group, or ABR, said it received a report of an adult black bear that had been struck and killed on Highway 321 coming into Townsend, Tennessee, on Tuesday. While inspecting the bear's remains, they then saw what drew the bear to the busy highway in the first place — a platter of pancakes. "With fall hyperphagia in full swing, the male bear probably saw the pancakes as an easy, high caloric meal." The agency reminded residents to live responsibly in the area, where black bears are common.

And they’ve kept up a drumbeat of dubious claims about voting, along with the lie that the election was stolen in 2020. Prosecutors allege that the Trump campaign used similarly aggressive tactics in Philadelphia to force confrontation with election officials, which Trump and his allies used to claim his supporters were denied access to observe the count. Election officials have been operating in an increasingly hostile environment as GOP skepticism of election administration has climbed. Among them: shifting numbers of noncitizens Trump allies claimed had voted in the 2020 election. In Georgia, state courts are reviewing new rules from the State Election Board that Democrats say give county election officials broad authority to delay certification of the results in search of purported election irregularities.

Researchers at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi have developed a high-tech solution to searching huge, arid areas for potential archaeological sites. Traditionally, archaeologists use ground surveys to detect potential sites of interest, but that can be time-consuming and difficult in harsh terrains like the desert. “Once it was trained, it gave us an indication of other potential areas (nearby) that are still not excavated,” says Francis. Khalifa University isn’t alone in using artificial intelligence to detect potential sites. If archaeologists find the structures the algorithm has predicted, Dubai Culture plans to use the technology to unearth more sites.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.
