Silicon Valley, long considered a progressive stronghold, has begun to shift toward Donald Trump, according to new voting data analyzed by Business Insider. These numbers show that Trump and Republicans are still a long way off from gaining any real majorities in Silicon Valley. While Elon Musk is based in Texas these days, many of his companies, including Tesla, are still very active in Silicon Valley. Trump, with Musk in support, has promised to cut regulations, which could help Silicon Valley startups grow more quickly. The trend toward Trump in the Silicon Valley electorate mirrors statewide and national trends.

I can assure you that Kevin is very real and, this year, very excited. Somehow this racist dictator was able to assemble a new coalition of Black, Hispanic, middle-class and working-class voters. Turns out even people in blue America don’t like it when their groceries cost more and they feel less safe. I must admit I had misgivings about Trump and his election denial after Jan. 6, but Nancy Pelosi’s hijacking of the House’s special investigating committee shifted my perspective. There was no world in which Trump could have come out of that committee without being scarred.

CNN —The US Department of Justice threw even more doubt into a new way of paying for real estate brokers this week, raising concerns about a recent wide-ranging legal settlement. The new rules included in the settlement represented the biggest upheaval to the US real estate market in a century, sowing worry among real estate professionals. The NAR settlement was originally announced in March, and the new rules took effect in mid-August. “This is an important moment for NAR members, home buyers and sellers, and the real estate industry,” said NAR President Kevin Sears in a statement about the settlement approval. Rob Crawford, the owner of Florida real estate firm Loch Realty, said he has heard of real estate brokerages weighing whether to leave the organization.

Each time, when the West finally accepted Ukraine’s requests, Russia’s most catastrophic threats did not materialize. Although Putin said the attack was “a response from our side” to the Biden administration’s decision on longer-range weapons, Russia has not needed a pretext for such strikes in the past. By providing Ukraine with ATACMS but only allowing it to strike parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia, “we sent Russia the message: ‘You know what? The decision to fire slightly longer-range Western weapons is a difference of degree, not of kind. CNN —At least four Democratic representatives from Connecticut said Thursday they were targeted with bomb threats while home celebrating Thanksgiving with their families. Reps. Joe Courtney, Jim Himes, John Larson and Jahana Hayes each issued statements revealing they were targeted with bomb threats, prompting law enforcement to respond. In each case, law enforcement ultimately found no evidence of a bomb and all four lawmakers have reported their families are safe. In a statement to CNN, US Capitol Police said they are investigating the latest round of threats against Democratic lawmakers. President-elect Donald Trump's proposed steep tariffs on imports could create winners in the stock market — particularly among companies that help businesses manage their supply chains, according to Redburn Atlantic. The shares of all these global companies are traded in the U.S. and Europe. Trump has proposed tariffs of 25% on all products from Mexico and Canada, and additional tariffs on goods from China. Kinaxis Kinaxis, which helps companies plan their supply chains using digital replicas of physical operations, could also benefit, according to Redburn Atlantic. Federal ethics laws require those senior government jobs in the Cabinet and beyond to divest their individual stock holdings, lest anyone be tempted to abuse their position of power to juice their personal investments. “The rule of thumb is, recuse or divest,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president for communications at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. “The more complex your assets are, the harder it can be to divest from them. Although the president isn’t subject to conflict of interest laws, most presidents have adhered to them anyway to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Given Trump’s own disregard for ethics rules, it’s not clear how, or even whether, his Justice Department would enforce the criminal conflict of interest laws that his Cabinet picks are subject to.

CNN —When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live following their engagement in 1998, she had a very specific requirement for their marital home: A view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The photographer has captured the spectacle almost every year since, missing the parade just twice in over a quarter of a century. Thomas the Tank Engine, the Kool-Aid Man and Boss Baby are just some of the dozens of other outsized characters Kahane has pictured floating slowly past her home — often at eye-level. Some shots were taken from inside the apartment, with kids seen enjoying the surreal view of parade characters — from Sonic the Hedgehog to Pikachu, gleefully riding a Poké Ball-inspired sled — looming outside.

It was there that my mother would find me come checkout time, surrounded first by tween smut from Sweet Valley High, then by rapes and murders from Mary Higgins Clark, and then by tales of riches, betrayals and come-from-behind triumphs from Barbara Taylor Bradford. I knew at the time that Ms. Bradford wasn’t considered an important writer like the distinguished Europeans my highbrow sister was reading. Ms. Bradford sold more than 90 million books, including 30 million copies of “A Woman of Substance” alone, making it one of the best-selling novels of all time. They did it because her characters were as real and legible to them as they were to Ms. Bradford herself. Barbara Taylor Bradford changed the way readers who might not have any connection to the shifting sands of literary fashion thought about themselves and their world.

At some point the hormones would quiet, the fascination would diminish, and I would return to my prior self. How do I reconcile this reality with the ambivalence with which I once approached motherhood? An increasing number of adults say that they are unlikely to become parents, leading to much hand-wringing over declining birthrates. For my generation — and, I’d argue, especially for women in my generation — the decision of whether to have a child has become highly fraught. It’s tied up in an understanding of all that went into making motherhood a choice that we get to make.

But while renters face unique affordability challenges, there are still steps they can take to improve their financial standing. Renters generally face financial challenges such as lower income, higher debt, less savings and lower rates of asset ownership, the report noted. Across income levels, renters are less likely than homeowners to own assets including cars, retirement accounts and securities, among others, the report found. Here are some of the financial challenges renter households in three sample income brackets face, according to the Aspen Institute, and ways they can build wealth. A hypothetical family in this category “first needs financial stability to meet the precondition for wealth building,” the Aspen report said.

Mortgage rates dropped last week, and homebuyers jumped off the fence. They drove total mortgage demand up 6.3% compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. While the drop in rates wasn’t exactly huge, there was a fair amount of pent-up demand among homebuyers. Last year at this time mortgage rates were higher, but falling. The increase in conventional purchase applications helped push the average purchase loan size to $439,200, its highest level in almost a month,” Joel Kan, an MBA economist, said in a release.

While richer people are expanding their footprint in the holiday travel mix, lower-paid ones are shrinking theirs: Households making under $50,000 are set to make up just 23% of travelers, down from 28% a year ago, Deloitte found. Indeed, the luxury travel network Virtuoso said it’s seen seasonal bookings surge 37% since last year among its high-end clientele. Some 64% of Americans plan to take more than one trip this holiday season, Deloitte found, up from 57% in 2023. “These travel choices may suggest that people are looking to save money, likely choosing cheaper options to keep their travel costs down,” the researchers wrote. Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst for Bankrate, said there are signs that “inflation continues to strain holiday travelers in a big way.” The consumer finance company found 86% of households making less than $100,000 annually expect to change their holiday travel plans due to cost increases (although a hefty 77% of six-figure earners said the same).
