For the better part of an hour, he might be the only person. Mr. Haugen has worked for more than half of his 52 years as a fire lookout, scanning the larch and pine wilderness from a one-room mountaintop cabin. More and more, he stands at another divide, too: between human jobs and automation. The chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Randy Moore, told lawmakers in March that the agency was moving away from humans in watchtowers. “We need to lean much further into the technology arena,” he said.

Mr. Meisner, the band’s original bass player, helped form the Eagles in 1971 along with Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Bernie Leadon. Prescribed burns aren’t always welcomed by communities, however. They generate smoke and sometimes spread out of control. In New Mexico last year, a prescribed fire by the Forest Service blew into a 340,000-acre inferno that destroyed hundreds of homes and became the largest in state history. It prompted Forest Service Chief Randy Moore to suspend all the agency’s planned burns for 90 days. Eddie Moore/Albuquerque Journal/Zuma

Solar-powered balloons are recording mysterious sounds below human hearing in the stratosphere. These balloons listen to the Earth from a dozen miles up, but not in frequencies that the human ear can detect. "In the infrasound domain our planet is very rich," Bowman, a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, told Insider. "I think one of the reasons humans can't hear infrasound is because we'd go nuts if we could." But Bowman wants to see more people flying infrasound-recording stratosphere balloons.

Just hours after Donald Trump became the first former president to be indicted, Republicans filed into a tavern northwest of Milwaukee to commiserate over Tuesday evening’s loss of a hard-fought race for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. As the clock approached midnight, a heated debate broke out between two men active in the local GOP, said Randy Marquardt , the party chairman in Washington County. One argued for loyalty to Mr. Trump, he said, while the other insisted it is time for the party to pick someone else as their 2024 presidential nominee. “It got ugly and people eventually went their separate ways to head home,” said Mr. Marquardt. “The other guy argued that Trump came with too much baggage, but there are still quite a few people who are all in with Trump.”Mr. Marquardt, who twice voted for the former president, says he thinks it is time to move on.
NASHVILLE—Tennessee Republican leaders said they would act following a mass shooting at a private Christian school that left six dead as pressure mounted from churches, civic groups and Democrats urging action. After days of mourning, officials from both parties and residents here have said they hope their hometown tragedy sparks some sort of change. Randy McNally sent a letter to Republican Gov. Bill Lee on Wednesday, calling for armed guards at all schools, securing windows and glass doors in schools, magnetic locks on doors and other measures. Democrats have suggested tightening laws to make it harder for people who are a danger to themselves or others to buy guns.

Paul Murdaugh was shot with buckshot from a 12-gauge shotgun in the chest, shoulder and finally the head, which did "devastating damage," Waters said. Margaret Murdaugh was shot with the rifle in the abdomen and leg before being shot in the head. It did grow gruesome as Murdaugh's lawyer, Dick Harpootlian, in his opening arguments detailed the grisly state of Paul and Margaret's bodies after they were shot. Members of Murdaugh’s family, including his older son, Buster, 26, and his brothers John Marvin and Randy Murdaugh were all present for the opening statements on Wednesday. His troubles grew worse when his son Paul was involved in a deadly boat crash in 2019, which led to the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach.

A U.S. Forest Service employee was arrested after the prescribed fire he was managing torched 18 acres of private land in Oregon, authorities confirmed Friday. The U.S. Forest Service did not respond to multiple requests for comment. In notifying residents about the fire this week, the Forest Service said in a statement that atmospheric parameters existed for a relatively safe prescribed burn, which had been planned at 300 acres. Christopher Adlam, regional fire specialist and assistant professor at Oregon State University Extension Service's fire program, said a prescribed burn hadn't torched private land in Oregon in 20 years until Wednesday. The arrest might not lead to more burn bosses in custody, but it could affect how officials work with prescribed burns, the scholar said.
