One of the Israeli Air Force planes that the military said was used in the attack targeting Hassan Nasrallah. The munitions contain 535 pounds of explosives, significantly less than MK84s, another type of 2,000-pound bomb frequently used by the Israeli military. That makes it extremely difficult to reliably estimate the number of munitions used,” he said. The use of 2,000-pound bombs, which are mostly manufactured by the US, can cause high casualty events in part due to the enormous scale of their impact. The Israeli military said it was striking Hezbollah, including in attacks by fighter jets on about 45 targets near a village in southern Lebanon.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly faced an international community from which he has become deeply isolated amid international condemnation of Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and the military's fresh escalations in Lebanon. As the General Assembly president called the room to order, groups of diplomats stood up and walked out of the room, leaving a sparse audience on the delegate floor. More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza in Israel's ensuing war with Hamas. Earlier this month, the General Assembly passed a historic, if symbolic, resolution with an overwhelming majority, demanding that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories within a year. The resolutions, like all General Assembly resolutions, are nonbinding and were resoundingly ignored by Israel.

A spokesman for the Gaza Civil Defense, Mahmoud Basal, said the missile hit the Al-Zaytoun School, near Gaza City, where thousands were sheltering. The Government Media Office in Gaza said 13 children, including a 3-month-old infant were killed. The Israeli military said that the compound was being used as a Hamas command center and precautions had been taken to avoid civilian casualties. More than 60 people were also wounded in the strike, according tothe Gaza Civil Defense, as rescuers raced to recover victims buried under sand and debris. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Monday evening that it “struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command-and-control center embedded inside the humanitarian area” in Khan Younis, Gaza. Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said Palestinians in the area were not warned of the strike in advance. “Ambulance and civil defense crews were mobilized to the site, and there is talk of a large number of killed and wounded,” he said. CNN —Mediators in talks for a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel are making a last-ditch effort to revive stalled negotiations as the Middle East braces for an Iranian attack on Israel. Tel Aviv, Israel CNN —As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrates what he sees as major victories against Hamas and Hezbollah this week, the mood in Tel Aviv is far from celebratory. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that his country “struck crushing blows” to the “the three H’s” – Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, all Iranian-backed, all fierce Israeli foes. Hamas also blamed Israel for the assassination of their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on Wednesday in Tehran. Netanyahu’s tone stands at odds with the mood on the ground in Tel Aviv, including among families of the hostages still in Gaza. Polls have repeatedly shown that most Israelis prioritize the release of hostages over continued war.

Israel's military on Thursday said it killed the chief of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, in an airstrike in July. "We can now confirm: Mohammed Deif was eliminated," the Israel Defense Forces posted on its official X account. The October attack set off the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, now in its tenth month, and the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza enclave that local authorities say has killed more than 39,000 people. The Israeli military said that the strike that killed Deif took place on July 13 and hit a compound on the outskirts of Khan Younis, near a tent encampment for displaced Palestinian people. Gallant added: "Israel's defense establishment will pursue Hamas terrorists — both the planners and the perpetrators of the 07.10 massacre.

Palestinians returned to the eastern side of Khan Younis in Gaza on Tuesday after Israeli forces pulled out of the area. The Israeli military has designated just one area of the Gaza Strip as a “humanitarian zone” for displaced people — and that area keeps shrinking. In the latest downsizing, the military on Saturday ordered the evacuation of two more parts of central Gaza that had been part of the humanitarian zone. Since last week, Israel has evacuated more than a fifth of the area that it had previously declared a humanitarian zone. There is no more place for any tents at the beach or in Mawasi,” he added, referring to the humanitarian zone.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses a joint meeting of Congress on Wednesday, July 24. But by the end of his speech, it was clear the Israeli prime minister had focused far more on fighting until victory in Gaza than brokering a ceasefire deal. “Give us the tools we need, and we will finish the job,” Netanyahu urged members of Congress. Netanyahu also claimed there were “practically” no civilian casualties during Israeli military operations in Rafah. That is unquestionably false: Multiple strikes in Rafah have resulted in civilian casualties.

Suleiman’s denial is part of a policy recently communicated to medical missions going into Gaza through Israel. Before the war, Palestinian medics and medics of Palestinian heritage who held other passports could apply to Israel for entry into Gaza and have no issues getting approval. The ad disclosed that “applicants with a Palestinian ID or Palestinian roots are not allowed into Gaza.” The post has since been deleted.

The “incident” Netanyahu referenced occurred in May and killed at least 45 people at a camp for displaced Palestinians. The airstrike injured more than 200 after a fire broke out at the camp following the strike, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry and Palestinian medics. In the same week of that strike, at least 29 Palestinians were killed in two separate Israeli attacks on displacement camps in Rafah, according to Palestinian and UN officials. CNN has seen firsthand video shot by stringers in Rafah and spoken to several health officials, humanitarian workers and eyewitnesses who have reported civilian fatalities as a result of Israel’s military assault on the southern city. Gaza’s Ministry of Health does not distinguish in its reporting between combatant and civilian deaths but has previously said that some 70% of casualties in all of Gaza have been women and children.

CNN —In his speech to Congress on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck a defiant tone, pledging to carry on with the war in Gaza until Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is eliminated. He defended Israel’s actions, pushing back against criticism that the war has gone on for too long and resulted in too many civilian casualties. The incident Netanyahu appeared to refer to occurred in May and killed at least 45 people at a camp for displaced Palestinians. Israeli officials have been making the claim that Hamas was stealing aid since October. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Lynn Hastings told CNN then that Hamas wasn’t stealing aid because aid wasn’t coming in.

For the families of the hostages held more than nine months in Gaza, there is no time to wait. The Israeli prime minister wants to meet with Biden before the Israeli delegation formally transmits its response to the mediators, the source said. US officials have been sensitive to the Knesset recess as they remain convinced that politics are at play for Netanyahu back in Israel. US officials believe it is possible that Israelis are seeking to put maximum pressure on Hamas ahead of a deal. US and Egyptian officials have begun preparing the flood of humanitarian aid that would enter Gaza if a ceasefire deal goes into effect.
