CNN —The Justice Department announced charges Tuesday against an Afghan national who was allegedly plotting a terrorist attack in support of ISIS on Election Day in the United States. The juvenile has also been arrested, according to court documents. The indictment comes as the Justice Department has publicly – and repeatedly – said its focus is on protecting the November presidential election from foreign threats. Tawhedi’s alleged plot, which prosecutors say was aimed at targeting “large gatherings of people,” was foiled less than a month before voters head to the polls. They also cited a video found on the phone that prosecutors say showed the 27-year-old telling his child about the rewards a martyr receives in the afterlife.

CNN —US federal prosecutors on Friday unsealed criminal charges against three Iranian government-linked hackers in connection with a hacking operation aimed at Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri and Yasar (Yaser) Balaghi are accused of aggravated identity theft and wire fraud for their hacking efforts on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Separately, the US Treasury Department on Friday imposed sanctions on seven people as part of a sweeping response to Iranian efforts “to influence or interfere” in the 2020 and 2024 US presidential elections. The alleged Iranian hack threw a twist in the presidential campaign in August when multiple news outlets reported receiving emails from a pseudonymous email account peddling documents stolen from the Trump campaign. The hacking operation began in June, when the alleged IRGC-linked hackers targeted longtime Trump ally Roger Stone and used access to his email account to target campaign staff.

Routh, allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month, prosecutors told a federal magistrate judge on Monday, with cell phone data allegedly placing Routh at the golf course as well as Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence across several days between August 18 and the day Routh was arrested. Routh was originally charged with two gun-related offenses, including obliteration of a firearm’s serial number and possessing a firearm while a convicted felon, while the investigation continued. New York CNN —The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Visa of illegally monopolizing the debit card market. The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. Visa, in turn, is able to charge more than $7 billion in processing fees on those transactions, the department says.

Prosecutors have already charged Ryan Wesley Routh with two firearms offenses, and a federal magistrate judge on Monday ordered him detained pending further court proceedings. The attempted assassination charge is “pretty rare,” according to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a CNN senior law enforcement analyst. But it has been used in other high-profile attempted assassination cases, such as that of a man charged with traveling to Brett Kavanaugh’s Maryland home with a gun, burglary tools and other equipment in an apparent attempt on the Supreme Court justice’s life. To prove their case, prosecutors would have to convince a jury that Routh took affirmative steps to carry out a plot to kill the former president. CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland slammed efforts to turn the Justice Department into a “political weapon” during a fiery speech Thursday to department staff and US attorneys from across the country amid attacks from former President Donald Trump and his allies. Trump and his associates have publicly discussed plans to dismantle the department and its law enforcement components like the FBI, or to prosecute his political enemies. Trump has repeatedly attacked the Justice Department under Biden, claiming without evidence that the president has used the department to criminally pursue him and his allies for political purposes. “They weaponized the Justice Department. The plot revealed by US prosecutors on Tuesday adds to a growing list of detailed Iranian plans to allegedly kill Trump, according to national security officials. Although Merchant is a Pakistani national, prosecutors say he spent time in Iran and has family there. Once in the United States, Merchant allegedly contacted someone who he believed would assist him in the murder-for-hire plot. Merchant allegedly then told the confidential human source that the work was not a one-time opportunity and made a “finger gun” motion with his hand. Merchant planned to leave the country before the assassination, prosecutors say, but was arrested before he could go.

CNN —A federal judge will consider how to proceed with special counsel Jack Smith’s election interference case against Donald Trump during a hearing later this month, according to a brief order Saturday. The judge overseeing the case, Tanya Chutkan, scheduled a hearing for August 16 to consider how the case should move forward. It will be the first time the case is back in court since the Supreme Court granted Trump sweeping immunity for official acts as president – a ruling that may gut Smith’s prosecution. Chutkan also asked both prosecutors and defense attorneys to propose a new schedule for the case going forward by August 9. As part of the order Saturday, Chutkan also denied one of the former presidents’ motions to toss the case.

The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.
