Biden administration officials said Wednesday they have no current plans to authorize a stockpiled bird flu vaccine, despite an escalating outbreak among livestock in the U.S. and at least 58 human infections across seven states. Almost all bird flu cases in the U.S. have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals — either dairy cows or poultry — aside from a patient in Missouri and a child in California. The federal government has two bird flu vaccine candidates available in limited quantities in the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile, though they need to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be used. Still, some public health experts believe the time for vaccination is now, particularly for farmworkers. In 1976, at the first signs of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in the U.S., public health officials quickly initiated a nationwide vaccine campaign.

Reuters —Major food companies, including Kraft Heinz, Mondelez and Coca-Cola, were hit with a new lawsuit in the US on Tuesday accusing them of designing and marketing “ultra-processed” foods to be addictive to children, causing chronic disease. His lawyers at the firm Morgan & Morgan, a major US plaintiffs’ firm, described the case as the first of its kind. The other companies being sued are Post Holdings, PepsiCo, General Mills, Nestle’s US arm, WK Kellogg, Mars, Kellanova and Conagra. Current U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf has said that ultra-processed foods are likely addictive. Martinez’s lawsuit alleges that the food companies have long known their products are harmful and deliberately engineered them to be as addictive as possible.

The 79-year-old Lula is “well” and being monitored in the intensive care unit after the successful operation, a medical note published by the government said. Presidential spokesperson Paulo Pimenta said in a radio interview that Lula would likely remain in the ICU for another 48 hours, with contact limited to his medical team. An MRI scan detected an intracranial hemorrhage, and Lula was transferred to Sao Paulo for surgery at the Sirio Libanes Hospital. Here are key lines from NBC’s interview, along with some context:What will Trump accomplish in his first 100 days? It’s not entirely clear what Trump meant by arguing in the NBC interview that the US is subsidizing Canada and Mexico. I don’t say you use them like a madman. After leaving PayPal, Sacks pursued a brief stint in Hollywood and produced Thank You for Smoking, a 2005 satirical film that was nominated for a Golden Globe. President-elect Donald Trump’s wide-ranging interview with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that aired Sunday touched on just about every major policy he has proposed for his second term, including imposing new tariffs, tackling inflation and mass deportations. “They deleted and destroyed all evidence of — that they found.”In the interview, Welker pointed out that Democrats deny this. According to Thompson, those agencies, and another House committee, continue to have access to the files and information the Republicans have argued was deleted, since the House committee didn’t archive them pending White House and DHS review. Tariffs, jobs and inflationTrump misconstrued the potential economic realities of tariffs, the taxes charged to importers on goods coming into the U.S. from abroad. In the interview, Trump said he’d be open to eliminating childhood vaccines “if they’re dangerous for the children.”“When you look at what’s going on with disease and sickness in our country, something’s wrong,” Trump said.

President-elect Donald Trump suggested that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his pick to run Health and Human Services, will investigate supposed links between autism and childhood vaccines, a discredited connection that has eroded trust in the lifesaving inoculations. The agency Trump has tasked him with running supports and funds research into autism, as well as possible new vaccines. Hundreds of studies have found childhood vaccines to be safe. Trump, too, has for years suggested a link between autism and vaccines. “Hey, look, I’m not against vaccines,” Trump said during the interview with Welker.

Weeks after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the presidential race in August and endorsed Donald Trump, the Trump campaign paid a California law firm that lists Kennedy among its lawyers, according to Federal Election Commission records. The Trump campaign — now known as Never Surrender Inc. — disbursed $100,000 to “JW Howard Attorneys” on Sept. 13, just three weeks after Kennedy bowed out of the race and backed Trump, FEC records show. The Trump campaign made no other payments to JW Howard Attorneys during the 2023-24 election cycle, according to FEC records. JW Howard did not receive payments from any other campaign or committee as of mid-October 2024, according to the records. Nearly 100 former national security officials signed a letter criticizing President-elect Donald Trump's decision to nominate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and called for closed-door Senate hearings to review any government information about her. In the letter obtained by NBC News, the officials urged the Senate to "carefully evaluate" whether Gabbard is "equipped" for the position, which requires Senate confirmation. "Following her trip to Syria, for example, Ms. Gabbard aligned herself with Russian and Syrian officials." The former officials also proposed closed-door hearings that would allow lawmakers to fully review any government files on Gabbard, a former Democratic House member from Hawaii. Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team slammed the letter, as well as the signers' credentials.

Musk financed RBG PAC, according to the report the group filed Thursday night with the Federal Election Commission. The super PAC, which did not disclose its donors before the election, launched ads contending that Trump did not support a federal abortion ban. But during this campaign, Trump backed away from that position and instead declared that he supported states' rights to decide abortion laws. Musk also gave $3 million to the MAHA Alliance, a super PAC affiliated with Robert F. Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" push, in late October. Trump selected Musk to advise him on cutting spending across the federal government as a co-chair of his "Department of Government Efficiency" initiative.

“The litany of things that will start to topple is profound,” said James Hodge, a public health law expert at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. “One in 3,000 kids who gets measles is going to die. The U.S. has seen 16 measles outbreaks this year — 89% of cases are in unvaccinated people — and a whooping cough epidemic is the worst since 2012. “If you overturn the administrative state, the impact on public health will be long-term and serious,” said Dorit Reiss, a professor at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law. It would take years before enough children died before people said, ‘I guess measles is a bad thing,’” she said.

AdvertisementBernie Sanders is taking on ultra-processed food in his final weeks leading the Senate health panel. Sanders wants the US to catch up with other countries, which have cigarette-style warning labels for food. He is campaigning for legislation that would slap warning labels on the front of ultra-processed foods — a step other countries took years ago. Some argue mandatory warning labels would violate their right to free speech. Sanders hopes this discussion will harness the buzz around Kennedy's MAHA movement to make warning labels a policy priority.
