People watch as Springfield Police Department officers investigate the Springfield City Hall after bomb threats were made against buildings earlier in the day in Springfield, Ohio, on Sept. 12, 2024. Ohio state police will conduct daily sweeps of schools in Springfield after authorities have been forced to investigate "at least 33" bomb threats that led to evacuations and temporary building closures, Ohio Gov. "We want to make sure, as school continues this week in Springfield, that parents have confidence that the school is in fact safe," the Republican governor said at a press conference. Local health officials have also denied that the influx of Haitian immigrants in the city has led to a rise in "communicable diseases" — another claim Vance promoted. There's no evidence of this at all," DeWine said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Becker, Minnesota CNN —The smokestacks on the aging Sherco coal power plant tower over gleaming solar panels that stretch across thousands of acres of farmland. The polluting coal plant is on its way out, scheduled for retirement in the next five years. Experts say this is the secret to solving America’s clean energy dilemma: There is more electricity from clean energy waiting to get connected to the grid than the entire amount of energy currently on the grid. A view of Sherco power plant, which has been operating since the 1970s and is slated for full retirement by 2030. But the reality is, it’s there.”From super-polluters to clean energy juggernautsThe answer to supercharging clean energy could lie inside some of the most polluting power plants in the US.

Mike DeWine on Sunday decried former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating dogs and other pets as "garbage," but stopped short of directly condemning the former president and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for spreading the false claims. There’s no evidence of this at all,” DeWine said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” when asked whether it’s responsible for Trump to push those false claims. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has slammed the false claims and urged the public, especially prominent public figures, against amplifying them further. “Springfield is a beautiful community, and your pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio,” Rue told MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” last week. We don’t need this misinformation.”Vance on Sunday pushed back on claims that the fringe online conspiracy of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets is false, claiming that he has heard concerns from constituents on the matter.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — It was meant to be an event to help heal the community. Instead, Haitian residents and advocates were confronted by a small group of frustrated Springfield residents and at least one right-wing provocateur Saturday evening outside the local Haitian Community Help & Support Center. They questioned why so many immigrants had moved into Springfield “illegally,” a claim that city officials have repeatedly said is not true. Haitian residents and people who had gathered to support them deescalated the confrontation shortly before police arrived. Thrust into the national spotlight by baseless — and to many, racist — rumors of Haitian residents killing and eating wildlife and pets, its economic comeback has been dramatically overshadowed by tensions that once rarely reached beyond city council meetings.

CNN —Donald Trump wanted to spend this week attacking one of Democratic rival Kamala Harris’ biggest political vulnerabilities. The promotion of the claims overshadowed a series of speeches aimed at the economy and blaming Harris for border security failures. However, during Tuesday’s debate, Trump’s attacks on Harris over immigration veered into the outrageous, as he falsely claimed that migrants are eating dogs and cats in Springfield. Democratic National Committee rapid response director Alex Floyd on Friday highlighted Trump’s relationship with Loomer and other controversial allies. During Tuesday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants “are eating dogs and cats … eating people’s pets” in Springfield, Ohio. “The fact that Donald Trump wants to double down on something so ridiculous just breaks my heart again,” Smith said. In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.

The pilots of a FedEx cargo plane couldn’t see the runway or the airfield at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. On Thursday, another near-miss was added to the list when an Alaska Airlines plane and a Southwest plane nearly collided in Nashville. In some cases, hero pilots such as Bradeen and Carvajal have kept collision courses from turning deadly. But about three miles out from landing, they grew uneasy when an air traffic controller cleared the Southwest flight to take off in front of them. The pilots’ awareness was heightened, but Bradeen said he didn’t realize a collision was imminent until about 100 or 150 feet away.

Here's what the Boeing strike might mean for flyers

Boeing workers went on strike Friday, the latest disturbance in what has proven a devastating year for the American aircraft manufacturer. Southwest had sharply brought down its delivery target for Boeing aircraft earlier this year. A United spokesperson said the carrier was working with Boeing to understand what the impact to the airline's delivery schedule might be. "There will probably be very little direct impact on consumers as a result of the Boeing strike," Harteveldt told NBC News. The previous Boeing machinists strike, in 2008, lasted nearly two months; however, in a note to clients, Bank of America analyst Ronald Epstein said the latest one could prove as short as a week.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio town at the center of a culture war over debunked claims about Haitian migrants was forced to close its City Hall on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the city announced on its website and social media channels. The bomb threat "was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield,” the city said. The city’s mayor, Rob Rue, indicated Thursday that the threat included complaints about Haitian migrants in the city, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Springfield has recently been thrust into the national political culture war as conservative influencers and Republican politicians have repeated a debunked claim that immigrants from Haiti have been stealing and eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats," he said.

Social Security recipients can expect next year's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to be the lowest since 2021, following cooler inflation readings in July and August. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment for 2025 on Oct. 10. Much of the political debate about Social Security remains focused on reforming — and ultimately paring back — the entire program. But earlier this year, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania introduced the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, designed to increase Social Security benefits at a rate "that actually reflects the costs seniors face." "The Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act would help seniors contend with rising costs and ensure that Social Security remains a lifeline for all who need it.”

The pace of inflation likely moderated again in August — further relief for beleaguered consumers still smarting from pandemic-era price shocks. Though price growth has largely returned to the Federal Reserve's official 2% target, the sting of rapid price increases over the past four years lingers for many consumers. The latest inflation report is likely to cement a 0.25% cut in the Federal Reserve's key interest rate, currently at about 5.3%, later this month. But experts say it will take some time for consumers to feel the impact of the lower interest rate — and the relatively small size of the cut means borrowing costs will still be somewhat elevated. While the Fed is now widely expected to cut interest rates, a cut of just 0.25% may not be enough to stave off that scenario.

"They're eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame." Wall Street relationshipsOne of Vance's earliest interactions with Wall Street came shortly after the November 2016 presidential election, when he headlined a lunch in New York to discuss his newly published memoir. John Underwood, a longtime managing director at Goldman Sachs, encouraged his allies to support and raise money for Vance's Senate campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. He told them the Trump campaign would need "hundreds of millions of dollars" to compete with Vice President Kamala Harris' fundraising surge. The Ohio Republican's opposition to Wall Street was on full display during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July. "Wall Street barons crashed the economy and American builders went out of business," Vance said in his nomination acceptance speech.

New York CNN —The battle over “founder mode” versus “manager mode” is one of those manufactured dramas that only a small segment of the world cares about — like going to Davos or Cannes or the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The idea is that a founder knows their company the way a parent knows their child. Graham doesn’t really define founder mode because every founder and every firm is different. I’ll offer another: Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater, one of the world’s biggest hedge funds. The most successful “founder mode” guys (they’re almost all male, as far as I can tell) seemed to always have a trusted manager by their side.

The rock group The White Stripes have filed suit against GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign for its use of the band's megahit "Seven Nation Army" in a since-deleted campaign video. White Stripes drummer Meg White is also listed as a plaintiff in the suit, which charges Trump and the campaign with "flagrant misappropriation." The duo seek unspecified monetary damages and an injunction preventing Trump from using their songs. A Trump campaign spokesperson, as well as a legal representative for the former president, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Jack White had foreshadowed the suit in an Instagram post a week ago after a Trump campaign staffer posted the video to social media Aug. 29, writing on Instagram: “Don’t even think about using my music you fascists.
