The news is a particular blow to Vice President Kamala Harris, since the union was the first to endorse Joe Biden's presidential bid in 2020. In a statement, Edward A. Kelly, the union's president, said that the group's executive board voted on Thursday by 1.2% not to endorse. Both presidential campaigns made personal appeals to the union’s members at a convention in Boston in August, with Minnesota Gov. Last month, the Teamsters union, which represents over 1 million truck drivers, freight workers and others, also declined to endorse a presidential candidate. The AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers union — which represent millions of workers combined — have each endorsed Harris this cycle.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two more tropical cyclones growing stronger in the Atlantic on Thursday. Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Storm Leslie currently pose no direct threat to land, but threaten to bring more rain to regions already reeling in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The NHC classifies this system as a major hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and a minimum central pressure of 948 millibars. It’s currently located 515 miles southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, but there are no hazards affecting land at this time. Heavy rainfall from this system is not currently expected to affect parts of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia that were hard-hit by Helene.

Hung Cao, the Republican Senate nominee in Virginia, disparaged drag queens and people who are tolerant of them by implying Wednesday that they are not tough enough to serve in the military. Cao, a Navy veteran, was asked to explain how he believes DEI could affect military recruitment. According to his campaign website, Cao is a retired Navy captain who served with special operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. Former President Donald Trump endorsed Cao in the Senate GOP primary; Cao later spoke at the Republican National Convention. The Cook Political Report, which examines the competitiveness of congressional seats and the presidential race, characterizes the Virginia Senate seat as "solid" Democrat.

“Democrats always want to be talking about health care because they have a political advantage over Republicans on the issue with voters,” Larry Levitt, executive vice president for health policy at KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research organization, told CNN. “Americans care about health care. They want to know where the candidates stand when it comes to health care,” Sarah Fioroni, a senior researcher at Gallup, told CNN. Early in the campaign, Trump revived talk of wanting to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with something better. The Trump campaign accused the Harris campaign of “lying because they are losing,” Karoline Leavitt, the campaign’s national press secretary, said in an email to CNN.
