After months of debate, lawmakers are poised to pass major changes to the Electoral Count Act. They wanted the vice president to either delay the January 6 joint session of Congress and/or unilaterally find that the certified results of states in disputes were not legitimate. I think Vice President Pence … did exactly the right thing and previous vice presidents have done the same. Trump himself has suggested that by clarifying the Electoral Count Act, senators are implicitly suggesting that Pence could have had this power. In order for pro-Trump lawmakers to throw the election to the vice president, they still needed to file objections to the results.

Mitch McConnell hit out at Donald Trump after the latter was referred to the DOJ for prosecution. In a statement, McConnell said that "entire nation knows who is responsible" for the Capitol riot, without directly naming Trump. The January 6 panel on Monday asked the DOJ to prosecute Trump on four charges linked to the riot. McConnell's statement came after the House panel investigating the Capitol riot on Monday asked the Justice Department to prosecute Trump on four charges. "There is no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day," McConnell said of Trump at the time.

Ron DeSantis by a wide margin in a hypothetical 2024 Republican presidential primary, according to a new poll. Trump received 55% of Republican registered voters' support, while DeSantis, his potential rival for the White House nomination, received just 25%, the Emerson College poll found. And in a potential rematch of the 2020 election in 2024, Biden would defeat Trump by a margin of 45% to 41%, the survey found. Voters with a high school degree or less support Trump by 71%. Republican voters with a postgraduate degree support Trump the least, at 32%.

“Personalities come and go,” said Dave Ball, the GOP chair in Pennsylvania’s Washington County, who has supported and defended Trump. Trump is preparing to do just that, with a Tuesday announcement expected at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. In Illinois, Republicans had threatened to take two state Supreme Court seats and flip state Senate and House seats. In Pennsylvania, GOP leaders had hoped to at least hold on to the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey. Trump lost the state by narrow margins in 2016 and 2020.
