An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.

A fourth ape has died from a shigella infection that has been plaguing animals at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens for weeks, the Florida zoo announced on Facebook this week. Kevin, a 3-year-old western lowland gorilla, "succumbed to the illness," the zoo said. "He fought very hard against the infection, showing signs of recovery at times," the zoo said. It added that the infection typically spreads through feces, food and water and can be more severe in the ape population. Kevin was born in April 2021 at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to father Lash and mother Madini, the zoo said.

A state district judge struck down North Dakota's abortion ban Thursday, saying that the state constitution creates a “fundamental right” to access abortion before a fetus is viable. "The Court concludes [the law] violates the Constitution of the State of North Dakota and is void for vagueness and of no effect," the order stated. The ruling stemmed from a request from the state to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a North Dakota clinic in 2022. Even though the judge’s ruling would make abortion legal in the meantime, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, there are no longer any clinics performing abortions in North Dakota. North Dakota's ban prohibited abortion at all stages of pregnancy, except in the case of death or serious health risk.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that an amendment that would enshrine abortion access in the state's constitution can appear on the general election ballot. Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said congressional Republicans should pursue a government shutdown if they cannot attach a hardline voting bill to the temporary funding resolution that would keep the government open. "The House Republican CR is an unserious and uncooked product," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor Tuesday. That same day, the House approved the rule for the CR, which would fund the government until March 2025, with the SAVE Act included. The final House vote to pass the funding bill is set to take place on Wednesday. But even if it passes, the bill would still be dead on arrival in the Democratic controlled Senate.
