Asia-Pacific markets mostly climbed on Monday, led by Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining 2% as investors look ahead to a week of central bank decisions from around the region. Three central banks are set to release their interest rate decisions this week, namely the Bank of Korea, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Reserve Bank of India. Economists polled by Reuters expect the BOK and RBNZ to cut rates, while the RBI will hold. The BOK on Friday is expected to lower its benchmark interest rate to 3.25% from 3.5%, while the RBNZ is expected to enact a 50-basis-point cut to 4.75% on Wednesday. Back in August, the RBNZ surprised economists after it lowered its policy rate to 5.25% from 5.5%.

CNN —Shohei Ohtani stole his 47th base of the season on Monday night to take him one step closer to a historic 50-50 season as the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 10-4 to the Chicago Cubs. Despite moving closer to making history, Ohtani was not the only storyline on Monday night. In fact, it was the performances of two former Dodgers, Cody Bellinger and Michael Busch, which decided the game. After the Dodgers halved the deficit in the fifth, the Cubs responded an inning later when Busch’s RBI single brought home Bellinger, and catcher Miguel Amaya batted in two more. An impressive return to LA for Bellinger was completed with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, followed by an excellent diving catch to kick off the bottom.

CNN —Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda has died at age 86, his family announced via the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Cepeda made his major league debut with the Giants in 1958 – the year they moved from New York to San Francisco. Orlando Cepeda, then a player for the Atlanta Braves, poses for a photo in 1970. APCepeda is one of only two players in National League history to win both Rookie of the Year and MVP honors, unanimously. Ohtani would later add an RBI single in the fourth inning, going 2-for-4 with two runs total in the game, as the Dodgers won their 50th of the season. “I don’t know what more we can really say about him,” Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman said of Ohtani, per the MLB. “I think we’ve said everything we can since he’s entered this league about what an amazing player he is. As a result, he’s already the favorite to win NL MVP midway through his first season with the franchise. He is serving as a designated hitter in 2024 after undergoing elbow surgery and will not pitch until 2025.
