London Associated Press —A children’s book written by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been withdrawn from sale after it was criticised for causing offense to Indigenous Australians. “Together with my publishers we have decided to withdraw the book from sale.”Indigenous campaigners were particularly aghast that neither Oliver nor his publishers, Penguin Random House, had consulted with them before the novel was published. Jamie Oliver's new book Billy and the Epic Escape. Joe Giddens/PA Wire“It is clear that our publishing standards fell short on this occasion, and we must learn from that and take decisive action,” the publisher said. Oliver released his first children’s book, “Billy And The Giant Adventure,” last year and said in a social media post that he had “carefully chosen the font to make sure the text is as clear as possible” as dyslexic people like himself can find it hard to read.

Five people were stabbed in an apparently random attack in Seattle on Friday, and police are investigating whether the suspect may have stabbed five other people since Thursday morning. A fifth victim was stabbed but was treated and released at the scene, Seattle police Deputy Chief Eric Barden said. "It’s certainly plausible that the suspect involved in today’s stabbing is the same suspect involved with the previous five incidents, but the investigation is ongoing," Barden said. In the other stabbings, a 52-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and four other people were stabbed in separate attacks between then and Friday's mass stabbing, Barden said. A 53-year-old man was also stabbed in the neck around 1 a.m. Friday, police said.

CNN —Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett stands apart. And that is why Barrett has become the best hope for what remains of the liberal wing, particularly after Trump’s election victory. As Trump returns to the White House, the Supreme Court may be even more positioned to check the balance of powers. Nonetheless, progressives have few options, and an uncertain horizon, and cannot help but imbue Barrett with hope. “As Justice Barrett said…,” is a common Kagan refrain, too.

But the South Korea electronics giant has now fallen behind its long-time rival SK Hynix in next-generation chips that have been key component for AI silicon leader Nvidia . Exit polls are conducted by Edison Research for the National Election Pool on behalf of a consortium of media companies: CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. The polling locations were themselves selected through random sampling, meaning the resulting interviews should be representative of Election Day voters across the state or nationally. In addition to the national exit poll, there are also exit polls conducted in specific states with key, competitive presidential or down-ballot races. Even so, exit polls are still polls, with margins for error – which means they’re most useful when treated as estimates, rather than precise measurements. That’s particularly true for the earliest exit poll numbers, which won’t yet have been adjusted to match the final election results.

Legal experts told NBC News that the disclosure could have legal fallout for Musk across multiple jurisdictions under laws designed to protect consumers from deceptive practices. Chris Gober, a lawyer for America PAC, made the disclosure at a hearing about the giveaways. Elon Musk awarded Kristine Fishell a $1 million check at a town hall in Pittsburgh on Oct. 20. Ajayi believes that once people connect the dots on the effects of climate change, they’ll start to take action. Photographs by Tatsiana Chypsanava When Sara Saumanaia thinks about climate change, she thinks about both of her homes. The area is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change; after a heavy rain, the streets around Saumanaia’s home regularly flood. It’s clearer than ever after months of close polling and years of intense polarization: Who wins the 2024 presidential election could come down to tiny differences in who votes and who stays home. But an analysis of the poll also shows how the composition of the electorate and small changes in who decides to vote could lead to small but important swings in the election. The more Democratic-leaning turnout universe is one that sees more women, nonwhite voters and higher-educated voters turning out, as well as those from the cities and suburbs. And the one favoring Republicans relies on the opposite: more white people, more men, more voters without college degrees and more from rural communities. But in the meantime, the analysis shows how small changes can have a big effect on a close election.

How to talk like a banker
  + stars: | 2024-11-03 | by ( Emmalyse Brownstein | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
A manager might leave a comment on a page telling the junior banker to "kill this," which just means delete it. A manager might also instruct the junior banker to "take another stab" at it, which means doing the presentation over again and sending it back by email. In stock market talk, "trading with the Street" usually means someone is trading along the lines of majority opinion. It's so much a part of the culture that the term is also used by higher-ups to describe their junior bankers professionally. Each time a banker makes changes to client materials pre-meeting — like a deck — it's standard practice for every round of edits or changes to be saved as a new file.

The Infinite Monkey Theorem hypothesizes that, given a typewriter and an infinite amount of time, a monkey could in theory produce the full works of William Shakespeare. According to Open Source Shakespeare, a web page containing all of the bard’s plays, poems and sonnets, there are 884,421 words in the entire works of Shakespeare. While the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust says the writer introduced more than 1,700 words into the English language, "banana" was not one of them. Other academics were less incredulous, suggesting that the paper was a wild goose chase — a phrase itself invented by Shakespeare. It may be time for the theorem to exit popular usage — pursued, unsuccessfully, by a monkey.

America PAC has been tasked with much of the pro-Trump canvassing operation as his campaign focuses its efforts on a more limited effort targeting so-called low-propensity voters. “I know it’s been flagged for America PAC that this has been transpiring,” an operative formerly on the effort said. As some of that data spilled into public view last month, an operative close to the effort said: “All hell has broken loose” inside the PAC. Through late October, America PAC had spent upward of $54 million on Blitz’s services, according to Federal Election Commission filings — more than the PAC has on the three other vendors combined. America PAC ended its relationships this summer with two other prominent GOP-aligned canvassing firms that were knocking on doors as part of its effort.

CNN —Talented though they may be, monkeys will never type out the complete works of William Shakespeare, or even a short book, a new study suggests. The Infinite Monkey Theorem is a famous thought experiment that states that a monkey pressing random keys on a typewriter would eventually reproduce the works of the Bard if given an infinite amount of time and/or if there were an infinite number of monkeys. However, in the study published in the peer-reviewed journal Franklin Open, two mathematicians from Australia’s University of Technology Sydney have rejected this theorem as “misleading” within the confines of our finite universe. They challenged it by looking at the Finite Monkeys Theorem, in which there is a finite amount of time and a finite number of monkeys. “By the time you’re at the scale of a full book, you’re billions of billions of times less likely,” he continued.

Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk, who supports Republican presidential nominee former U.S. President Donald Trump, gestures as he speaks about voting during an America PAC Town Hall in Folsom, Pennsylvania, U.S., October 17, 2024. A federal judge in Pennsylvania on Friday sent back to state court a lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk and his political action committee seeking to halt their $1 million daily giveaway to voters in the swing state. The order returning the case to state court in Philadelphia came a day after the suit by the city's District Attorney Larry Krasner was removed to federal court at the request of the Tesla CEO Musk and his America PAC. Krasner's lawsuit accuses Musk and the PAC of running an illegal lottery by offering a random cash prize to registered voters in Pennsylvania. Friday's ruling sets the stage for Krasner to potentially obtain a quick order in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas blocking America PAC from awarding any more $1 million prizes to registered voters in the state.
