Opinion: Trump gives Biden one big lift
  + stars: | 2024-03-17 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +18 min
Former President Donald Trump’s favorability ratings are only slightly better. The bipartisan legislation to control the flow of migrants across the southern border was blown up by opposition from Trump. One thing that is going right for Biden is Trump himself. “I want to vote for Donald Trump in November, wrote Marc A. Thiessen in the Washington Post. … Just like office holders have released their tax returns (up until former President Donald Trump), I would like to see more candidates release their physical and mental health assessments,” Schurman observed.

CNN —The public absence of Catherine, Princess of Wales, has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline in a matter of weeks. Droves of amateur detectives have crafted timelines and deep dives into the princess’ movements over the last few months, combining real concern with outlandish conspiracy. The uproar, the theories, the analyses, the jokes and, yes, the serious concern — they all show the multitude of ways people interact with and view the royal family. “Not [the royal family] specifically, just anyone in that kind of position.”Catherine, Princess Of Wales is seen during the opening of Evelina London's new children's day surgery unit on December 5, 2023 in London, England. Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesMore dire than the growing transatlantic comedy routine is the apparent dissolution of trust between some media outlets and the royal family.

This photo released by Kensington Palace shows Kate, Princess of Wales, with her children, Prince Louis, left, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. In a constitutional monarchy where kings and queens wield little actual, but plenty of soft power, visibility is everything. Perhaps the biggest clue: How on earth had William managed to capture all three children smiling at the same time? The palace meanwhile failing to issue a comment for long hours while the nation dove head first down the rabbit hole. More than 12 hours later, Kate finally responded: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said on social media.

Kate's claim that she is an amateur photographer is questionable, an expert said. CHRIS JACKSON/Getty ImagesHer description of herself as an amateur photographer could very well be down to the British trait of modesty, but people aren't convinced. The palace typically uses Kate's photos instead of hiring a royal photographer to mark major occasions and milestones, such as birthdays. Speaking to BI in 2020, royal photographer Samir Hussein said Kate takes photos that "any professional would be very happy with." Kate's statement comes during a crisis period after King Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in January.

Read previewMultiple photo agencies are sounding the alarm that Kate Middleton's newest portrait with her children could have been digitally altered. Many were focused on the cuff of Princess Charlotte's pink cardigan, which appears to disappear in the photo. AdvertisementA spokesperson for the AP pointed Business Insider to a story from the outlet, in which reporters explain why they believe the photo to be manipulated. "The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand," per the AP. Kensington Palace did not immediately answer questions from BI about allegations that the photos were altered and has not publicly responded.

Kensington Palace released the image of Middleton and her children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — on Sunday, writing that the photo was taken by Price William. Kensington Palace previously announced that Middleton underwent a planned abdominal surgery in January. AdvertisementOne photo editor who dissected the image told Business Insider he was surprised the photo was released in the first place. "It's astonishing that Kensington Palace released it, and even more bewildering that the wires distributed it," said Patrick Witty. Kensington Palace did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

As of Monday morning, the image remained posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales's account on social platform X. Although celebrities have altered photos with editing tools for years, images taken of the royal family have a historical importance and are expected to be authentic. The use of image editing to present a false narrative goes back almost to the dawn of photography itself. Image tools with generative AI will allow so much more than photo manipulation because people will be able to create images from completely new scenarios. As AI images hit the mainstream, it will open up more discussions around transparency and the need to regulate usage so news outlets and the public can better spot AI-generated and augmented images, he said. Although AI image watermarks already being implemented on certain platforms, mandating that will be a challenge, Hayden said.

Catherine, the Princess of Wales and the wife of Prince William, underwent abdominal surgery in London on Tuesday, and will remain hospitalized for 10 to 14 days, according to the couple’s office in Kensington Palace. The office did not offer details on Catherine’s diagnosis or prognosis, other than to say that the surgery had been planned and was successful. It said the princess, who is 42, would continue to recuperate at home after she left the hospital and would not return to public duties until after Easter. “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery,” Kensington Palace said in a four-paragraph news release.
