CNN —When the next Powerball numbers are drawn Monday night, a lucky lottery player somewhere in the country could win an estimated $800 million grand prize. Although there was no jackpot winner Saturday, five tickets won $1 million each in California, Florida, Indiana, Texas and Washington, according to the Powerball website. The last time the Powerball jackpot was won was in January, when a ticket in Michigan scored a prize worth $842.4 million. Since then, there have been 35 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, according to Powerball. Winning the Powerball jackpot means a ticket correctly guessed all five white balls plus the red Powerball.

The string of numbers on the lottery ticket that John Cheeks bought matched those posted on a Powerball website. Had he beat unfathomable odds to win the $340 million grand prize? Not according to Powerball administrators, who said the numbers Mr. Cheeks saw on the site were part of a test that had been “mistakenly posted,” rather than the winning numbers for the drawing in January 2023. Mr. Cheeks has asked for the $340 million in compensation, as well as damages and interest on the winnings. “This is not merely about numbers on a website,” Richard Evans, a lawyer for Mr. Cheeks, said in a statement.

A store employee habitually ripped lottery tickets after checking them with the lottery terminal. Lottery commissioners deliberated over the case of Paul Marshall, who came forward to collect his prize even though a store employee had torn his winning ticket to shreds. The tearing incident occurred when Marshall returned to the store he bought the winning ticket from to validate it. Fortunately for Marshall, lottery officials were able to "reconstruct what happened," Chuck Taylor, the lottery director of legal affairs and compliance, said, according to the Lottery Post's reporting on the meeting. CNBC Select explains the drawbacks of buying a lottery ticket with a credit card and what to do instead. A credit card cash advance is when you withdraw money from your credit card, essentially borrowing cash against your card's line of credit. Cash advance fees typically amount to 3% or 5% of the total cash advance withdrawn. "If you use your credit card for these transactions, you may be charged a cash advance fee and a potentially higher cash advance interest rate." In a number of states, including Massachusetts and Georgia, buying a lottery ticket with a credit card is illegal.

Justin Sullivan | GettyThe Powerball jackpot surged to an estimated $1.73 billion, the second-largest prize in the game's history, without a winning ticket on Monday. While it's the first time Powerball has seen back-to-back billion-dollar grand prize cycles, lottery jackpots have gotten bigger more frequently over the past several years, experts say. Without a jackpot winner, the estimated grand prize keeps rolling over until a player chooses all six numbers. Higher interest rates have boosted jackpotsAnother reason for bigger lottery jackpots over the past couple of years has been rising interest rates, said Akshay Khanna, CEO of Jackpot.com, which sells state lottery tickets. "The higher the interest rates, the more you're earning on that pool of capital."

CNN —An estimated $1.73 billion Powerball jackpot is up for grabs during Wednesday night’s drawing, setting the stage for a lucky player to potentially win what would be the second largest prize in the game’s history.
