The recent unwinding of the yen "carry trade" could remain a long-term headwind amid already turbulent markets. JPY= YTD mountain The Japanese yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar marked the unwinding of the so-called carry trade. "There's still quite a significant yen short position out there," Osborne said. He estimates that there is still a roughly $15 billion yen short position through July 30, still to be covered. In other words, that short position could drive more strength in the yen as that position is covered.

Food May Be the Last Thing on Your Mind

We scroll our feeds, read endlessly, watch media people talk and talk and talk, listen to them opine. We anger and worry, mourn and resolve, and then return to the scrolling, the reading, the listening. Food doesn’t obviously have a role in our understanding of events playing out on the world stage. We process news together, around tables, in the presence of those we feed, with whom we eat. And when the food on those tables is made with care and served with affection, it has a palliative effect on the psyches of all who consume it.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance was crushed on Sunday after the far-right National Rally (RN) party surged in the first round of the country’s parliamentary elections. It would then become the first far-right party to enter the French government since World War II – although nothing is certain ahead of Sunday’s second round. “Tonight is not a night like any other,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said solemnly in an address to the French. The left-wing New Popular Front has announced that it will withdraw all candidates who came in third to help prevent far-right candidates from getting elected. A loss would force Macron to nominate a prime minister from whichever party wins – putting a political opponent in charge of running the government.

Sure enough, the next day began a historic ascent of Apple stock, an in-your-face rally that many thought made no sense. There's a coalescence of two themes, high speed, accelerated computing and increasingly intelligent AI, and neither works without Nvidia chips. I know that it seems impossible to ponder Nvidia's stock going any higher or passing Apple and Microsoft and staying ahead of it. Ask yourself, does any company match Jensen and Nvidia right now? I say let others be baffled over the Apple versus Microsoft versus Nvidia conundrum.

London CNN —London’s stock market has edged ahead of its rival in Paris as fears grow over the outcome of France’s looming parliamentary elections. The first round of the French elections is scheduled for June 30, followed by a second round on July 7. Hubert de Barochez, a senior market economist at consultancy Capital Economics, said investors might be concerned that a parliament run by the National Rally would penalize banks. In contrast with the political and financial turmoil in France, UK financial markets are “relatively stable,” said Rudolph at IG Group. Credit ratings agencies are already keeping a close eye on France, one of the EU’s three most-indebted countries.

Biden did not want to feed Trump’s feverish charge that he was the cause of the former president’s myriad legal problems. But Biden and his campaign has mostly gone for the capillary, not the jugular. (It’s also a little bewildering why Team Biden, struggling with younger voters, cast De Niro as its point man here. Navigating Trump’s legal thicket has been a challenge for Biden from the start. Predictably, the Trump campaign jumped all over Tuesday’s events, accusing the Biden campaign of desperation and jury tampering.

In the summer of 1974, I was working as a waiter at the White Elephant, the grande dame of Nantucket hotels, a rambling gray-shingled pile that sits right on the island’s harbor. Thinking about it still makes me cringe. I had not been back inside the White Elephant in almost 50 years when, last spring, I returned to the island to check into the famous inn as a guest, size up its recent multimillion dollar makeover at the hands of the Boston architectural firm Elkus Manfredi, and ponder the ways in which both the island and I had changed. Though it’s hard to believe today, when Nantucket airport is filled with rows of private planes that have delivered their owners to this island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, many people clucked at Elizabeth T. Ludwig’s hotel when it opened a century ago. Without the social cachet of more accessible resorts like Newport, R.I., or Saratoga Springs, N.Y., it struck many people as folly to believe the swell set would spend their holidays on Nantucket.

“Too much life enters this house,” Tillie Olsen, the writer, labor activist and mother of four daughters, wrote in a letter to the poet Anne Sexton. Olsen and Sexton were among the early recipients of a paid fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study. In some ways, remarkable progress has been made for American women since then — at the time, for example, it was perfectly legal to fire a woman for getting pregnant. (In other ways, we have returned to the 19th century.) The book made me ponder whether some of the conflicts that parents feel between their family responsibilities and other parts of their lives can be fully resolved.

This kind of connection between strangers, human heart to human heart, is so rare as to be startling, especially these days. April is National Poetry Month, and it strikes me that no one is better positioned than Ms. Limón to convince Americans to leave off their quarrels and worries, at least for a time, and surrender to the language of poetry. When Ada Limón tells you that poetry will make you feel better, you believe her. In her nearly weekly travels as poet laureate, Ms. Limón has had a lot of practice delivering this message. “It’s so meaningful to lean on poetry right now because it does make you slow down.

As a clinical psychologist, I've spent 14 years teaching people how to regulate their emotions and cope with difficult situations. Here are five things I do when I need to stop overthinking everything:1. Write it outWhen you need to process your feelings or an experience, instead of overthinking, practice expressive writing. Try this exercise over the course of three days: Day 1: Spend 15 to 20 minutes writing about the stress and trauma that is plaguing you. Researchers say it's because writing can help you go deeper into your emotions, while also creating some distance and an end point.

The dollar was steady on Friday after data showed U.S. inflation remained sticky but easing gradually, keeping alive the chance of the Federal Reserve cutting rates in June, while the yen slid back to the key 150 per dollar level. The data showed U.S. prices picked up in January in line with expectations, while annual inflation slipped to the lowest in three years. Takata's comments stoked expectations that the central bank could end negative rates in March rather than the widely held view of a move in April. The contrasting comments are likely to keep investors guessing about the next move from the central bank. The Australian dollar rose 0.08% to $0.65025, while the New Zealand dollar was little changed at $0.6088.

As investors ponder how — and where — to invest in this uncertain climate, CNBC Pro asked market experts where they recommend allocating $100,000. "By investing purely in cash and fixed income, you can already get a decent return," Jia said. And with global central banks cutting rates, fixed income will likely benefit from capital gains as well because of the duration." Within fixed income, Jia likes government bonds from developed countries and investment-grade bonds from "reputable firms," which offer "quality" and "longer-term growth" potential. Investors nearing retirement, for instance, should have a more conservative portfolio mix of 80% in fixed income and 20% in equities, according to Jia.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years.
