LONDON — European markets are set to open lower on Wednesday as earnings season ramps up. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 was last expected to open 25 points lower at 8,137, while Germany's DAX was set to shed 76 points to 18,472 and France's CAC 40 was expected to open 54 points lower at 7,540. LONDON — Soft drinks maker Britvic has agreed to a sweetened takeover bid of £3.28 billion ($4.2 billion) from Carlsberg, the companies said Monday. The deal agreed offered 1,290 pence per share for Britvic, with a small dividend that gives shareholders 1,315 pence per share. Britvic in June refused an improved cash takeover bid from Carlsberg offering 1,250 pence per share of the British soft drinks maker. Carlsberg's previous June 6 offer price of 1,200 pence per Britvic share was also declined. PepsiCo is key to the deal, as Britvic bottles and distributes PepsiCo brands in the U.K. and Ireland.

Customers of HSBC , Nationwide and Virgin Money suffered outages to their online banking services on Friday, in the latest such disruption to plague an industry which increasingly relies on such digital access as it closes physical branches. Thousands of HSBC customers in Britain were unable to access online banking services on Friday, as the bank acknowledged an outage affecting some users of its website and banking app. The bank said at 1115 GMT it had restored access to online and mobile banking, after more than 7,000 customers had complained of problems, according to website DownDetector which tracks such outages. Virgin Money said some of its customers could not access online and mobile banking, while Nationwide said some customers' salary or pension payments were delayed. Some 6,000 branches have closed in Britain since 2015, according to consumer publication Which?.

Britain cuts stake in NatWest via £1.24 billion share sale

The British government has sold 1.24 billion pounds ($1.58 billion) worth of shares in NatWest Group back to the lender, it said on Friday, decreasing its stake to about 22.5% from nearly 26% previously. The London-listed bank bought back 392.4 million shares from the government in an off-market purchase at 316.2 pence a share, as part of its existing contract with the state. The heavily anticipated stock sale is a key milestone in the bank's full privatization. The settlement of the off-market purchase will occur on June 4, the government said in a statement.

Shares of EasyJet fell more than 7% on Thursday after the low-cost airline posted a slightly larger-than-expected loss in the first half of the fiscal year and announced the forthcoming departure of its CEO. Pre-tax losses came in at £350 million ($443 million) for the six months to March, higher than the £340 million expected by analysts, according to a LSEG poll cited by Reuters. The company also announced that CEO Johan Lundgren will be stepping down in January 2025 after seven years at the helm of the business. Rubrik is the first tech unicorn IPO since last fall. Soaring copper prices show no signs of slowing down, analysts say, with the red metal's rally fueled by supply risks and improving demand prospects for energy transition metals. Copper prices with May delivery traded at $4.323 per pound in New York as of Wednesday morning, extending gains after settling at its highest level since June 2022 in the previous session. Copper briefly hit a high of $4.334 in intraday trading on Tuesday, reflecting its highest level since the middle of January last year. Three-month copper prices on the London Metal Exchange traded 0.6% higher at $9,477 per metric ton. Wall Street banks are bullish on the outlook for copper prices through to the end of the year.

Steve Eisman of "The Big Short" fame has been bullish on infrastructure stocks after studying the industry for the past two years, and here are the companies he likes the most. Eisman, senior portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman, said he has narrowed the universe of investable stocks to 80 stocks. The stocks Eisman passed up included residential solar companies, which already had a great run during the Covid-19 pandemic as major beneficiaries of zero interest rates. Instead, Eisman likes solar panel companies that sell to utilities, which he said are doing well from a fundamental perspective. He said with the widespread arrival of generative AI, concerns about physical attacks being the next phase of cybercrime have grown. He added that the technology, now boosted by AI, exists to wreak havoc on physical systems. Attacks on physical infrastructure would be tantamount to war, and so far, that is something nation-states have avoided. Experts, though, vary on the threat level from cyber-physical attacks and how much AI is raising it.
