The European Union on Friday voted to adopt definitive tariffs on China-made battery electric vehicles. “Today, the European Commission’s proposal to impose definitive countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China has obtained the necessary support from E.U. Member States for the adoption of tariffs,” the E.U. first announced that it would slap higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports in June, on the grounds that they benefit “heavily from unfair subsidies” and pose a “threat of economic injury” to electric vehicle producers in Europe. to start investigations of potential tariffs, Germany has advocated against them, raising concerns about consequences for its own struggling carmakers.

Workers at ports stretching from Maine to Texas went on strike early Tuesday in a dispute over wages and automation. So, the unpredictability of this issue here is really in play and it has the magnitude to really throw a giant wrench in global supply chains,” she added. Ocean supply chains have already been hit hard this year by conflict in the Red Sea, a lengthy drought affecting the Panama Canal and the Baltimore bridge collapse. Every workday, on his early-morning drive to his job overseeing a warehouse in northern New Jersey, Sean Murphy takes in the frenetic scene of the busiest port on the East Coast. Towering cranes lift shipping containers off vessels newly arrived at Newark from points around the globe. Mile-long freight trains pull cargo to and from the docks. Belching trucks clatter down the highway, hauling containers to distribution centers from Maine to Florida. Here was a visual encapsulation of the challenge confronting the global economy: cargo marooned, commerce frozen and no clarity on when normalcy will return.

Read previewFrom Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, billionaires are the power players of philanthropy. It's not possible to generalize, but billionaires' philanthropic contributions likely do not outweigh the negative aspects of wealth inequality. For every Chuck Feeney or 'good' billionaire, there is an Elon Musk or Bill Gates, both with questionable practices. Bill Gates is an example. How does MacKenzie Scott's philanthropy differ from how other billionaires typically approach giving, and what lessons can they learn from her?

A cargo ship is sailing towards the docking of a foreign trade container terminal in Qingdao Port, Shandong province, in Qingdao, China, on June 7, 2024. Judah Levine, head of research for Freightos, says if history is any guide, additional tariffs will fuel ocean freight rates. Any increase in freight demand will fuel rates, said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at ocean freight rate intelligence platform Xeneta. "When ocean container shipping markets increase, that cost gets passed down the line and ultimately it is the end-consumer who pays the price," Sand added. Xeneta data shows the last time Trump ramped up tariffs on Chinese imports during the trade war in 2018, the ocean container shipping markets spiked more than 70%.

However, inflation-weary consumers might be taking their money elsewhere when it comes to theme parks. In its 2024 third-quarter results, Disney blamed a "softening consumer environment" for sliding demand in its theme parks. A one-day, single-park ticket for Walt Disney World has climbed on average 5% per year over the past 10 years. On the other hand, the price of Disney World and Disneyland's cheapest ticket has remained steady since 2019. A Disney World one-day, one-park, off-peak ticket will cost a park-goer $109, and its equivalent at Disneyland is $104.

Mr. Vásquez Morales is the administrator of the Panama Canal, which is both the economic heart of his isthmus nation and a central artery for global trade. Last year, a drought dropped the lake to critical levels, prompting canal authorities to limit traffic. The Changing Supply Chain

For decades, major companies have behaved as if geographic distance were almost irrelevant. A factory in China was the same as a factory in Michigan. The pandemic and geopolitical upheavals have exposed the risks of depending on faraway industry to make critical things like computer chips, protective gear and medicines. The pandemic shockThe emergence of Covid in China ended the previous version of globalization. Quarantines shut Chinese factories at the same time that Western consumers, stuck in lockdown, ordered more manufactured goods like exercise equipment and electronic gadgets.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. US officials say they do not believe Ukraine intends to hold Russian territory for the long term. Russian authorities help residents during evacuation efforts at a railway station in Oryol, Kursk region, August 9, 2024.

CNN —Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers. Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. Neither the Ukrainian military nor the government in Kyiv has publicly commented on the operation. A Russian military blogger Rybar reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border.

Trenton, New Jersey AP —New Jersey’s ban on the AR-15 rifle is unconstitutional, but the state’s cap on magazines over 10 rounds passes constitutional muster, a federal judge said Tuesday. “Bans on so-called ‘assault weapons’ are immoral and unconstitutional. He added: “We look forward to pressing our arguments on appeal.”Several challenges to state assault weapons bans have cited the Bruen decision. A gun rights group has challenged Connecticut’s landmark 2013 gun control law, passed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, that bans assault weapons, including certain AR-15-style rifles and large capacity magazines. The state’s assault weapons ban dates to 1990 and includes various other weapons, but Sheridan focused on the Colt AR-15, citing the plaintiffs’ concentration on that weapon in their court filings, and the law specifying that make of the rifle.
